Tokyo officials paying for bloggers to come to Japan and show it's safe -
The idea is the latest bid by Tokyo to repair a reputation that was badly hit by the quake and tsunami disasters in March 2011 and the subsequent nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima.

We are trying to convince foreign tourists to come back to Japan and trade partners to resume imports of Japanese food by showing influential bloggers that Japan is safe,” the official said.

"We have invited foreign journalists from major newspapers and broadcasters, but these bloggers have direct channels to the audience, to whom established media do not necessarily appeal."

Japan's diplomatic missions research the scale of nominees' cyber-audience before offering them a one-week trip to Japan, the official said.

And this
We have been in a heap of trouble since March 17th of 2011, when the plume of radioactive materials began bombarding the west coast of California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. And later Maine, Europe, and everywhere in between. Independent researchers, nuke experts, and scientists, from oceanography to entomology and everywhere in between, having been trying to sound the alarm ever since. Cesium-137 at the Fukushima Daiichi site is 85 times greater than at Chernobyl. The most preliminary reports of soil contamination are starting to come in from the USGS, who has been reluctant to share this information. Los Angeles, California, Portland, Oregon, and Boulder, Colorado, so far have the highest radioactive particle contamination out of the entire US. Every single city tested across the country showed contamination from Fukushima. What is even more alarming about the numbers coming in, is that they are from samples taken April 5th, of last year.

It's safe enough in Tokyo. I was there in March for two weeks. It was my first visit there since the quake last year and you see subtle signs of the changes since that quake but for the most part it seemed no different than my prior visit.

I spoke to many there and while there is concern about more quakes for the most part folks I spoke with didn't seem too concerned about Fukushima and felt the situation there was under control. Matter of fact, they seemed somewhat amused about all my questions and said folks here are somewhat over-hyping the situation. I dunno where the truth lies, but I hope the country makes it through these tough times as they really are wonderful people there.

shrug, people don't think things through very well. It's unfortunate that as a result, industries like this can get away with slow murder.

Sorry, cosmic radiation is not the same as fallout. It does not get lodged in your lungs. It does not bioaccumulate in your food and get lodged in your thyroid, heart, bones, etc. Fission products are very dangerous. We have not evolved to handle them in our environment on the surface of the earth.

Comparing airplane radiation to fallout is a spectacularly weak argument. You say you protested after Chernobyl? With an argument like that? Oh yeah, I bet you did.

I think it did ok.
Tokyo was this exciting, ultra-modern seeming city (very expensive though), and everyone wanted to try authentic Japanese sushi (which would now be about the worst thing you could do if you went there). Fukushima was likewise famous for its peaches, which you wouldn't want to try now. (Except maybe Atom-Boy...lots of peaches for him at discount rates I'm sure.)

I find they're a very artistic people and I hope many will relocate elsewhere and preserve their culture.

But most people in Tokyo do not speak English.

And they did...the government has already spent quite a lot of money on that, actually. That's not even includign private corporations like TEPCO doing their own PR and so on.

But don't forget, their primary target is Japanese people. Yes, they are rightly worried about tourism and exports, but their whole country can easily be thrown into turmoil if population wakes up. Already, the population has demanded that every nuclear plant stay offline...right now there is no nuclear power in Japan!

Imagine if they insisted on ZERO radiological contamination in their food and water! As if it was their basic right not to eat TEPCO's nuclear waste or something! Well, it would be a nightmare for the national government...

So, you see, inside resources are mostly directed toward that. And then , English-speaking Japanese would probably be directed at trying to keep businesses invested in Japan, not individual people... (And they haven't been very successful with that...businessmen are experts in BS so they can smell it pretty fast). Plus, the fact that Obama, Harper and Cameron have all agreed to help sweep this under the carpet (not to threaten their own nuclear industries, which they each siphon from), means less of the Japanese national government's efforts need to be put out there for us anglophones.

Anyway, sure, there's a few English-speaking shills from Japan targeting us "Joe Blow"s, but it would be so much easier to get naive English speakers suckered in by showing them good hospitality and filling their minds with misleading half-truths, then sending them off to propagate their message, in the the hippest, most viral way...

It's all a pretty savvy PR plan...

Unfortunately this is because they're terrified that people will discover that behind the PR curtain, virtually nothing is being done about the current level of contamination across Japan or about stabilizing the wreckages at Fukushima Dai-ichi, as they are continually bombarded by earthquake after earthquake.
