The "god, lord, master" references that the Pharisees would use to describe god, for me stood at very strong odds with how Christ described "the Father".

Re: Q: Do you guys suppose the Pharisees *recognized* how far off base they were from God's heart?
I feel there is a difference from what Christ spoke about back then, and what the Pharisees (and their scribes) spoke about, even to today.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 502821

Agreed. Even apart from doctrinal stances, consider Jesus' actions and words to the outcasts of society. . .to the woman at the well, and to the woman taken in the act of adultery He said not one word about judgment or even repentance. With the one, he asked for a drink and was soon discussing the nature of worship, and to the other He said "I don't condemn you - go and sin no more."

If we aren't exhibiting this same grace to others, are we actually following Jesus? If we aren't forgiving our enemies, are we really following Him?

This is vital stuff, folks.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8788578

Too true.

Chriastians are..for the MOST part..

Those who think they are TOO GOOD to actually LOVE people...but think they have the right to spout their arrogance and fear on all those who see their hypocrisy for what it is.

All we hear is words..judgmment..verses copy pasted in some ravenous campaign to condemn and belittle..to kill off the hope of the dying..to make sure those who are looking NEVER find..and then condemn them for never finding..telling them..in a LOT of case with "LOL's" after the statment.."WELL..if you dont repent God is going to burn you in hell"

How is THAT supposed to reach anyone?

In case you have not noticed it only pushes people away.

Youi claim to represnt the most loving selfless being in the universe..

But every post.,every word..every threat and every snide condemning comment..only prove to one and all you work for the most EVIL being in the univers.

Its a FRUITS thing last I heard.

So SHUT UP..and start LOVING people..perhaps you might actually find Jesus yourself one day IF YOU DO.

There was a thread on here a few days ago..someone apolagised on behalf of christians for them being so arrogant..

And just about every christian on here turned up at her thread to prove she was right.

It turned into a doctrine fight..a pride fest..a selfish loathesome mellee of "MY god is better than YOUR god..and if you dare say christians are cruel and arrogant god will burn you in hell"

The thing is though...

i think some of the history and the daily examples play a large part in people saying they have become "atheists" I feel... perhaps responding to alot of the "Do as I say, not as I do" aspects to some things...

when that happens though, when people go totally "modern physical world/crude matter" view point, i feel that may the "baby did get thrown out with the bath water"... :(

I feel that the quote from Matthew 10:22 is often used:

"Everyone will hate you because you are committed to me. But the person who patiently endures to the end will be saved."

I often think about this quote too... because really am interested about Christ's Good News... and man, i seem to get it equally by both the "Creationists" AND the "Evolutionists"... it made me just want to shut the heck up, and feel like a freak in the world. ;(

They thought they were spot on, and couldn't conceive the notion that they might be completely wrong in both their beliefs and practice. They didn't know God's heart, and they missed entire the point.

Jesus came along, and He was nothing like they expected God to be. He sincerely cared about even the "least important" people in society.

Maybe we'd do well to stop and assess ourselves so as to avoid such hard-hearted religious error, yes?

That is interesting, and sad... if true, it seems the people had chosen (his own people even) to save a criminal who was a Son of the Father in name only, and so wanted the real Son of the Father get made an example out of, and in one of the most harshest i've read about...

verysad

That speaks more of Matthew 10:22 than anything... i just hope we don't do anything like that again.

--

What is interesting is that alot of what Jesus said had become scripture, like the ones the Pharisees used to justify alot of thing...

Christ never wrote anything down though, and i sometimes do wonder if the disciples totally understood him message as well...

I feel he deliberately spoke in parables so that those who had the "ears to hear" would hear it, Pharisees spoke in scripture...their codes and laws...

Of those, only a few listened it seemed (based on the account of the crowd choosing a known criminal for pardoning) and the majority of the crowd may have booed and gnashed their teeth towards Christ, but for me also his Good News...

I have hope people won't make the same kind of mistake...

i don't know about that from the article i read...

For me there was a group condemned for maximum example making... but there was a tradition it seemed which the pontius was expected to follow, which was to let the crowd the option to pardon one only from punishment...

but yeah, criminal was given crowds empathy and concern, while the other... yeah.

The Pharisees were admonished for failing to abide in God's Word, and instead following their own born out of their wicked imaginations.

There is little in the way of scripture being preached, referenced or received, and much in the way of doctrines of men.

One can quote all the bible verses in the book, but "the letters kills, while the Spirit gives life". It's pretty clear that scripture itself is inadequate (quote me on this). . .look how many denominations and cults are out there, all supposedly based on the bible. They differ in any number of doctrinal views, yet all claim the same book as their source.

Without knowing and yielding to the Author, we're pretty much guaranteed to end up off course out in left field.

For starters, as for 'yielding to the Author' (i agree wholeheartedly by the way)... shouldn't we use a Bible translation that hasn't removed God's name from it (due to some supposed superstition as to correct proununciation or whatever)? If the primary focus of Jesus was to sanctify (or hold as holy) God's name (Matt 6:9, John 17:6) shouldn't God's name be important to Christians as well? (see Malachi 3:16)

Regarding the "preaching work".. how about 1.7 billion plus hours worldwide in 2011? They followed the example of Jesus and early Christians preaching door-to-door, in the synagogues, at the train stations, in the marketplaces, in the mountains, in the islands, by phone, by writing letters, flying to remte places... anywhere there's people that need to hear the message!

That's the number of hours spent in the preaching work by a certain group... you know them well.. they go door-to-door preaching God's Kingdom... oh and they bear God's name :P... and, yes, they "preach Scripture"... while many are out there talking about preaching... interestingly these are the only ones busy doing it.... all of them from "the least" to "the greatest" including those taking the lead. How is this accomplished? They are organized and, most importantly, because of having God's holy spirit.

The result? Many meek conscious of their spiritual need are learning "the truth" of God's Word and joining them... 263,131 baptized last year... that's an average of 720 newly baptized ones per day! Do you know of any other organization that is experiencing that kind of growth?

"Jesus said: The Pharisees and the scribes have taken the keys of knowledge (and) have hidden them. They did not go in, and those who wished to go in they did not allow. But you, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves"

I dont blame you... many people we talk to express a similar disdain and are disillusioned with organized religion. However, note that it would only make sense that God have an organization on earth carrying out His will...

"This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our Savior, God, whose will is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth" 1 Tim 2:3,4

By the way, I applaud you for the question/thread. Heart condition is crucial in order to be able to draw close to the Creator and his Son.

Not to get off on too much of a tangent, but the Greek term they translated "all sorts" there is pas, meaning "all". Some of the concordances claim that pas probably really means "all sorts" and "all manner of" because they couldn't conceive that it's God's will for literally *all* to be saved.

Recall in John 12 when the priests were talking about how to silence Jesus and His disciples, and one of them says "The whole world is going after Him"? Unfortunately, scholars apparently didn't see this statement as prophetic, and thus their mandate to water it down with scribe-speak.

However, when we're told "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive", we would agree that the "all" who died in Adam includes everyone, ever (minus Jesus Himself), yes?

Agreed. Yes, God wants all to be saved- even though it's been written that apparently not all will be - but not due to God not willing it but due to (back to the topic of the thread) the heart condition of some who just wont change. (see also, 2 Pet 3:9)
