I just started getting this too. On my iPhone with AT&T. I though it was AT&T fucking with me because I've been getting throttled the past few months once I reach the 3gig limit in my unlimited plan. But then I tried it on wifi and same thing. Tried it with Brighthouse, u-verse and a few local free wifi hotspots. All the same.

Very strange

This has been going on with me since Youtube changed their format. I have att, I have cleaned up my cache, history, etc., I have tried pausing it for a while,...nothing is working.
I also noticed something else... I used to be able to click on a video from a laptop, wait for it to load and then take it to another room (where there is no internet connection) to watch it & the video would play completely. Since the format change, I cant do it anymore. I go to play video and it erases it. This new youtube format sucks ASS!! 21st century and we have a website that plays like its 1995. Go figure.

I have this issue now CONSTANTLY . I have found that clearing my brousing history &cache SOMETIMES will unfreeze the vid & it will resume playing. SOMETIMES.

I think now the only way to play a YouTube video with either a slow connection or offline is to use a downloader. It may be that YouTube changed their buffering system BECAUSE of all the downloading going on.

I haven't really looked into using a downloader because I have a high speed connection.

I had faced the same prob and I reduced the quality of the vid and then let it buffer to a certain and then change the quality back up again and the bufferin will start again from the beginin since the quality is changed but when this is done the prob doesnt seem to persist.

Youtube says to change the resolution of the video while it is paused and the video will buffer to the end. Worked for me.

Re: Youtube Buffering problems. Doesn't seem to buffer paused vids anymore. Anyone else?
My question is simple. I used to be able to start a vid on youtube. Pause it, let it buffer a while or until finished, then go back and watch it. Now it seems I am unable to get any youtube vids to buffer. I hit pause, it stops loading the video, and no matter how much time has gone by no amount of buffering of the video was done. Bandwidth is not a problem on my end, so it's not that.

Anyone else experience this? I did do some searches on here and elsewhere to see if I could figure this out, couldn't find anything.

Has Youtube disabled buffering? So if you are not actively watching a video it won't load it?

IMO its a good thing !, means the whole vid doesnt load if you want to watch bits of it !, saves heaps of net use !

(SOLVED) I too had this problem recently and thought it was my connection or computer but it's not. All I had to do to solve this brutally sad situation was to uninstall the latest flash (adobe 11.whatever) and revert back to flash 10.2xx and problem solved. Now my youtube and other flash related sites work like a charm and don't slow down my comp anymore. Try it and I bet it will work for you. Adobe flash 11 is a pile of bsflag

it buffers for a short time ahead now. it won't load the whole video if it's paused. they must be trying to save bandwidth.

Re: Youtube Buffering problems. Doesn't seem to buffer paused vids anymore. Anyone else?
I have the same problem and it is kinda frustrating since i have a load bandwith and my only solution to see a video on youtube is to pause it before i play it.

I cant do that with there limitiation. However, i found a small button next to the button where you change the quality that says "Watch later" When i press this button, the video will be buffering to finish.

Hope this will solve the problem for you as it did for me.

Good luck.

Go to:

[link to www.youtube.com]

Towards the bottom of the page look and see if you have been "volunteered" to participate in the html5 trial. If you have then opt out of the program and then YouTube should work fine
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 0

This worked for me - right click the video, there is an option in there to check HTML 5 status, and that has a link to un-participate!

Looked around a little more, and YT themselves say to adjust the video quality in the little gear icon in the window... now mine will load while paused again.

(also leaving it muted in the background while loading was a great idea!)

Hey some of these guys are onto something, it won't speed it up all the way or anything, but changing the video quality while paused and in maximized screen allows it to buffer fully to the end even while paused. Though I can't seem to do this if all the video has is only low quality...

Re: Youtube Buffering problems. Doesn't seem to buffer paused vids anymore. Anyone else?
I noticed the same thing. I guess this means people who have slower connections can no longer view YouTube videos unless they can find a good downloader to view it on their HDD.

Although I prefer to view a fully buffered video, I can understand YouTube's position. After all, it is their website and video takes the most bandwidth.

I now have a high-speed connection so this does not affect me. However, I wouldn't mind finding a good, high quality, downloader. I'm looking for something which can download off any website, including YouTube and BBC. If anyone has found a downloader which can do this, please post a reply here. I don't care if I have to pay a little, up to $35.

I want a downloader which does not make major changes to my system, does NOT have adware, and does NOT have spyware or trojans.

Ugh I have stopped using youtube entirely. I'm not gonna sit here for 15 minutes waiting for some two minute video to load. It's just not worth it to me anymore. This only started for me a few months ago. I remember reading something about anti-piracy and all youtube videos being scanned as they played and to expect a slowdown, and then this started right after I heard that so I kind of assumed this was related to some anti-piracy garbage. I have at&t btw. Other video sites have slowed down for me as well, but nothing close to how bad youtube has gotten.

I do not have comcast. AT&T the highest speed DSL they can get me. 3.0mbps down.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15640397

I was with AT&T for several years before I too started experiencing problems. It was crazy. Bandwidth tests were highly erratic. I called AT&T 3 times, and 3 times they sent a service guy out to tinker with all sorts of unrelated cables (coax). I was paying for 10Mbps service and getting 128Kbps service. The service techs would run a bandwidth test and get 7Mbps one time, 1Mbps the next time, and 2 Mbps the 3rd time, then tell me it was working fine.

I had also been having quality issues with AT&T cell service, and was pissed about them trying to force me into a phone upgrade so they could get rid of my "unlimited data" contract. So, when I dumped AT&T Internet, home phone, TV, and cell service, they lost nearly $3k per year in subscriptions.

I am no fan of Comcast or Verizon, but I am spending less money, getting 10Mbps service (supposed to be 30Mbps but Comcast doesn't seem to be able to hold up their end of the contract either), and experience far less aggravation with the service.

Bottom line: If you are with AT&T, run multiple back-to-back bandwidth tests on a semi-regular basis over a two day time-span. If you see intermittent results, odds are that you are experiencing time-outs and packet loss which can significantly hamper the streaming experience.
