Scientists can now delete genes in plants that form beneficial plant chemicals aka Cancer fighting chemicals.
"Taking advantage of this information, and using sophisticated genetic and analytical techniques, Saito and colleagues found that the genes UGT79B1 and UGT84A2, which encode enzymes called UDP-dependent glycosyltransferases (UGTs), clustered with other genes involved in producing anthocyanins. When they deleted the UGT79B1 gene in Arabidopsis plants, they found it drastically reduced anthocyanin production. Further experiments, using genetically engineered UGT79B1, allowed them to uncover the precise biochemical function of the UGT79B1 enzyme, including its substrate specificity.

The UGT84A2 gene was already known to encode an enzyme that attaches glucose to a molecule called sinapic acid—a building block of anthocyanin sinapoylation, which is a chemically modified type of the anthocyanin molecule. Saito and colleagues experiments revealed that the level of sinapoylated anthocyanin was greatly reduced in mutants lacking the UGT84A2 gene.

The researchers were also able to study the evolutionary relationships of the UGT enzymes in various plant species. “Our work provides a ‘roadmap’ for anthocyanin modification routes in Arabidopsis and other plants,” says Saito."

I think they are also now trying to say deletions in crop genome are not GMOs so while the fight for the labeling of GMO crops and foods they can just get rid of any part of the plants genes that create anything good and won't have to say crap about it.

So while the fight continues to get GMO's labeled we have this:

Crop plants with DNA deletions are not GMOs

This study ushers in a new era in crop breeding. Plant geneticists will now be able to use TAL-nucleases to introduce precise, favorable modifications in any region of the genome. Remarkably, because Li and colleagues have bred out the TAL sequences, the resulting rice varieties lack any foreign DNA.

Instead of adding a sentence or two to the genome book, as is done by standard genetic modification (GM) approaches, they removed a few letters; the rice varieties they generated lack anywhere from 3 to 57 bases in their genomes (as in the Figure to the right from the Li paper). Thus, the rice plants generated by Li et al. do not contain extraneous DNA and cannot by any reasonable definition be considered “GMOs.”

They could take out these genes and they don't even have to say anything at all.

Now you understand why our ancestors "deleted" the "scientists" and "chemists" of their day. There's a reason there were no laboratories back then and that type of pseudo pharmaco witchery wasn't allowed -- the very reason you just shared in your post.

It got washed away at the time of posting due to something going on.

But yep its scary research to be doing really and tagged with the fact it seems with the other piece unlike GMO's and labeling gene deletions would not even need to be disclosed.
