Dude, what part of the total of the bat and ball is 1.10 don't you understand?
I'm convinced you may not even know what the definition of the words "total" or "cost" is.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9540311

one last time... The bat cost $1 more than the ball. does the bat costing a dollar and the ball costing 10 cents give you a difference of a dollar. no.

people think Americans are stupid?
 Quoting: FaithNoMore

No, you're still not grasping the definition of a total.
The op says the total cost is 1.10.
The bat and the ball together
cost 1.10.
A dime is still considered money in America.

To the other AC chiming in on this,
you're wrong too.
What you and this other guy prove is that there are more idiots in America than not.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9540311

haha i know what the total is..1.10 i know also that there is a difference of one dollar between the bat and the ball. the ball cost a nickel. I hope you can solve this one day.
 Quoting: FaithNoMore

"Often wrong, but never in doubt"

YOU ARE, I'm sure.

If the ball cost a nickel, the bat would cost a 1.05 more than the ball, not a dollar like the OP states. The OP states it costs a 1.00 more, not 1.05 more, the correct answer is still ".10".

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

I know a lot of you know the answer.

This is an example of bullshit obfuscation that must mean you're in the government writing tax law right OP?

America used to be the place where a^2+b^2=c^2 was used to put 500 lb shot onto an invading enemy laying siege to one of our forts. Back then you had to do a math problem in your head while rifle bullets were whizzing by.

Nowadays America really is the place where there are genius discrete mathematicians and dudes who can't read taco bell menus. There aren't any craftsmen anymore who had geometry. You either code in like 4 different languages or you're a complete dumbass.

Re: GLP and math questions on a saturday night!
Look men, I am high as fuck and it only took me 45 seconds to type this out, someone say algebra?

His initial conditions:
(1) ball+bat=1.10
(2) Bat=ball+1

solve (1) for ball:
(3)ball=1.10-bat

Insert (3) into (2)
Bat=1.10-bat+1

2bats = 1.10+1
2 bats = 2.10
1 bat = 1.05

Use (3) to solve for ball:
ball = 1.10 - 1.05
ball = .05

Whatever, but the difference between .10 and a 1.10 is still a dollar.

I know the difference between a 1.00 and .10 is .90.

The question states the bat costs exactly 1.00 more than the ball not 1.05.

So I read this question is an experiment out of MIT. What if it's an experiment within a larger experiment to see if people can be forced to deny that which is blatantly true under peer pressure and invalidation.

As the other poster said, bullshit opfusacation.
And no, I don't bank with BOA, I've been with my local credit union for a few years now.

Yes, the bat costs a dollar more than the ball. Now $1.05 is one dollar more than $0.05. Because if you have five cents and I give you a dollar you have a dollar and five cents. $1.05.

It is also true that 1.05+.05= 1.10.

So both conditions are met if the ball costs 0.05.

********************************

Suppose the ball costs .10

Then according to the conditions, the bat costs 1.10, because 1+.1 = 1.10 (because that bat costs a dollar more)

But a ten cent ball together with a ball costing one dollar and ten cents costs 1.20

OMG. I can't take it anymore. After years on this site lurking this is getting me to type my first post.

As a former math professor, please let me point out that IF...

ball = $.10 and
bat = $1.10,

that the TOTAL is $1.20. The TOTAL is supposed to be $1.10. Thus there is no freaking way the ball can be $.10 with the bat a dollar more and the total coming out to $1.10.
