Get off the grid !!!
Buy some land with a stream.
Solar power, wind power, hydro power.
Garden, fruit trees ....

That's what I'd do.

Someone mentioned Australian banks offering 6% on interest, heres a site that lists worldwide interest rates of various banks.....
[link to www.deposits.org]

I wouldnt want to try this though as it would be easy for a shady bank (in a shady country) could easily say "what deposit?" "What bank account sir?" lol

Take 30,000. Use that to live very modestly for 3 years. Get very cheap accomodation and a good quality internet connecton. Open up a simulated currency ( play money ) trading account. Learn how to day trade currencies. After one year trading only fake money, doing lots and lots of study and research, risk a few hundred dollats in a micro account. Do this multiple times until you learn how to trade profitably. You should be ready to trade the other 70,000 in 3 to 5 years.

I've actually been paper trading for almost a year now. As of now, I am trading live with a $1k amt and doing minilots ($1/pip). I've been able to do this semi full time (only trade certain sessions) because I still have semi passive income coming in from the freelancing work I do.

It may shock many skeptics but 10%-30% returns per month is feasible for some traders, it's just a matter of not giving up and finding that edge. Right now, I have a small amt being managed by a trader but you know what they say, give a man a fish, he eats for a day but teach him how to fish...

I didn't expect this thread to get pinned and receive so many responses, sorry for being MIA due to family matters. This 100k came in the last year due to a method I was using (w/very small investment) and is not working now and I'm looking to do something more stable. Not anything illegal/prostitution, lol.

I may have 200k to work w/when all is said and done. No, it's not that much in the grand scheme of things, but hopefully I can stretch it out and not blow it on designer handbags or a nice car. In my 20's, I'd have done that.

I should have clarified myself, I'm leaning more towards a business investment so I can get a better return as the stock market seems too risky for me. I did look into real estate but there's an overabundance of it and worried my properties will stay empty for some time, at least in my area. Don't have enough to buy a solid franchise like a Mcdonalds but I have even seen some sit empty. I do like the idea of having a "live off the grid" set up. Would be great if SHTF.

Really appreciate everyone taking the time to answer my questions! Great ideas! I've been to [link to www.thefastlaneforum.com] and got some great ideas, too. Also [link to earlyretirementextreme.com]

Don't get me wrong, I do plan on working for awhile (BS in chemistry which is not worth that much) but this is more like when SHTF or backup plan if I become that 50 year old lady that nobody will hire after getting laid off, peace of mind if you will. I guess I just have a cynical view of the economy, esp with the rise of technology taking over jobs and jobs being shipped overseas. Sorry to say, I think it's only going to get worst. Because I'm self-employed, earning stability is my main concern so I figure I could find a way to have multiple income streams in case one fucks me over, which it has many times. Maybe I should just take a Xanax, lol.

Thanks all and have a great day!

OP, this is serious advice.

INVEST IN THINGS THAT LAST.

P&G, Coca cola, pepsi, railroads, precious metals, gas/oil venture

I could go on, but those are places to start.

Agreed, but right now MCD, KO, CAT and other good names are being sold into every rally. I watch this daily: check the charts

Those who were smart enough to buy in the fall of 2008, early 2009, have seen their investments grow 500% in a few years. The hard part is to avoid the urge to buy at the top of the market, and most investors are unable to overcome fear to buy at the bottom.

That said, I believe we will see cheaper prices for all those names before September UNLESS one thing: Bernanke announces QE III

However, I don't think that will happen quite yet. They will let this crisis in Europe and the serious slowdown in China work itself through a bit longer before they act (but I do believe they will act)

AC is correct, however, have a short list of the best stocks to buy on any serious dip, esp the top dividend stocks. I have a list of the MLP and energy trusts which I wish I had bought in the post LEH crash of 2008. I'll post them here

again, good luck, and remember in times of uncertainty CASH IS KING ...and my personal motto: WHEN IN DOUBT, STAY OUT

cheers

So when you say "cash is king" would that mean taking it OUT of the bank and keeping it literally cash in hand?

Take your 100k of greedy wealth and pull it.

Than, smarten up and move the shits out of the city and find some nice peacefull land in northern wisconsin/michigan up/minnesota by lakes and streams. It will be cheap and maybe 2k and acre. Try to jump near the forest reserves for seclusion.

Buy a nice used ford expedition 4x4 with a plow on the front and a tandem trailer to haul wood and shits. Get a small tractor with hydralics, a 22 horse riding lawn mower, 8 horse snow blower, chain saw, weed whacker, generator runs on propane, garden tools and anything else you may need dirt cheap in the wilderness.

Drill a well on your land, buy several shipping containers for under ground living, build what is called a park model home on top of the containers. Build a steel garage for the toys. Get direct tv and internet.

By lots a guns and ammo.

Start your own business in the wild. You'll have to use your own smarts on this.

Fuck that money and keeping it in a bank that uses your money against you.

Look at what will always be needed, not wanted when purchasing stocks.

Utilities, drug companies, big oil, the ones that have a solid name, solid long term dividends that increase yearly.

ATT, Verizon both are long term plays, XOM just increased its dividend by .40 a year.

ATT (T) is fairly cheap, you can sign onto an online broker and pay less then $10.00 per trade.

Another one is Duke Energy, they pay $1.00 yearly, trading around $20.00 a share. 1000 shares will give you $1000 a year, reinvest the dividends, 10 years time the investment should at least double. This takes a yearly dividend increase into consideration.

The vast majority of tech stocks have played out, but the fun times have passed, names like Lucent, Cisco, Intel, MS, Sun Micro to name a few have now resorted to paying dividends.

This is the only way they can keep investors happy.

Re: I have 100k rotting in a bank, how can I make it last for 30 years, ie live on it
This is what we're seeing take place around our region & also considering doing it ourselves:

Start scouting out smaller towns within 20-30 (maybe 40 but don't go over 50 at most!) miles of major city, best is one with at least a community college if not a university. College students are good market and charge high deposits + check the house often. Close to a larger city means people wanting to work in city but live out away from big-city school districts w/ all their problems will also be a good market too.

So start a business with rental homes by buying a few small older houses (recommend 1 at first so not to get too much on the plate) ... chose houses that are not too bad off & look for the things that young families would want & will need as prime factors in choice made (fenced backyard like chain link for kids to play in yard safely, an area for washer/dryer, etc) ... these do not have to be nice homes & can even be in the lower class & minority areas but do choose carefully by assessing the area and think things through from renter's point of view. Also unless you're very handy, hire someone or a service that can serve as a handyman to do all the painting & minor repairs when needed.

Let me tell what happened at my garage sale last week:
we had recently done remodel work w/ some new appliances too so then sold off older ones and they were still good shape as do take care & I had them priced cheap $100 for fridge 6 yr-old w/ icemaker, washer + dryer @ $300, etc and they were not very old, worked fine, heavy duty ones cost $400 up new.

An older lady w/ a young hispanic woman driver came early in a new cadillace... lady looked wealthy and she bought all of them right away w/ cash then called her maintenance man to bring his truck over to pick them up. While she waited in her car for him, the hispanic woman, I will call her Mary, browsed the other stuff & I asked questions. Turns out this lady is a widow x 10 years and "lives in mansion " and despite her husband dying has still kept building up their retirement business of rental properties which has now grown to 25 houses this year.

The maintenance man is husband of Mary (she works as housekeeper & driver full-time for that lady) and he works full-time to take care of all her rental houses + meets with clients to show them properties. Some rentals are in their neighborhood which is a hispanic area and are very popular w/ waiting list according to Mary. She said that this lady puts better appliances in her houses and this is how she gets them: each weekend she goes a few hours to shop in the more wealthy neighborhoods for what she needs then has her man come get them. Also her rental houses come furnished w/ a working washer + dryer in all them so that is a huge plus for anybody w/ a family that must rent as going to laundry places is scary stuff these days and a big hassle too.

I went over to her car after than and spoke w/ the business lady about how they first got started up, etc and she was very nice... told me that you can have lots of rentals if you set it up as business & hire some good help to do all the hard stuff + she uses a bookeeper service too.

Also been hearing from some of my cousins who are ranchers but have started buying a few small farms w/ basic homes on them (< 10 acres) so to lease out as AG properties to people wanting something that is practical and yet have no real $$ to buy anything. One farm has been set up as a lease-to-buy but who knows if those folks will ever get it paid off so then the owner keeps all the payments that were made as rent (there is a contract). The cousins have pulled out of all other investments as no longer have any trust of Wall St or bankers - period... one told us that he & his wife are finding out how owning the properties seems to be one way to easily make some extra $$ in this depressed economy. And he knows how to do most everything practical so does his own repairs as needed on the places he leases out.
