I've had no problem with Subaru's before. Best 4wd vehicle I owned was a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder. Took me 4 hours to get from NoVA to Columbia MD in a bad snow storm (1+ foot on the ground and then more). Back roads then freaking I-66 etc was a nightmare but my trust steed back in the day of 1999 didn't let me down :D

I currently have a VW Tiguan SE 4Motion. So far so good. However, it is summer :P Rain it handles great in though! If I could have any AWD vehicle? Let me get back to you on that :D

However comparing the SX4 to any car is wrong, since it is a cross over. It should be measured against the likes of the Ford Escape, Kia Sorento, GMC Terrain, Toyota Rav4, etc. When considering the price it is good deal, but safety testing is sub par, and reliability is atrocious.

Subarus being crossover unibody vehicles is not the problem.

The problem is that as a crossover with AWD, even a Forester will outperform the vast majority of so called tough 4x4's. And it can fit where the monsters won't.
