I believe the United nations has failed in its duty to protect the planet and is now null and void.

Whats worse, its obvious to me the politicians have put thier financial situation before the fate of the planet. Suicide bankers is the phrase that springs to mind.

I have not heard a word from the United Nations, not a bloody word from the "worlds spokesman".!. I definately blame the United Nations.

The reason why the United Nations exists is to ensure world stability, you would have thought there would be statements on mainstream leting those who want to know what's going on.

The United Nations has a "Mushroom Management" practice. Feed the people loads of shit and keep them in the dark.

OP did you read my rant were i hold every government from every country on the planet to blame!

this is a world event and no one is doing a thing.
where is the world outrage!
where is the world's support?
if this keeps going as we heard russia's meltdown still is.
this will effect every country in the world....
either the country will have to leave their land and the people move somewhere else...
or the ppeople will be entering your country.
both side will have a hell of a time to adjust.

i just hope the countries will meet us with open arm of brotherhood and not guns and fences!!!!!

I see people saying there will be a "steam explosion" if it hits the water table?

As I understand it, when the molten core comes in contact with water it doesnt create steam, the core strips away the oxygen atomsfrom the water and creates two hydrogen atoms, so the explosion will actually be a hydrogen/oxygen explosion.

Is this right?

To put this in perspective, the melting point of uranium dioxide is 2865 °C that is 5,189 °F

Molten lavas temperature is just 700 °C to 1300 °C.

Or the photosphere of the sun is just around 5,500 Fahrenheit. So we are talking just 400 degrees cooler then the temperature of the suns photosphere!

I also see people saying "nuke it". I have been thinkjng about this possibility and its very risky.

That said, in theory its possible, but one nuke wouldnt do the job. I think it will take at least 3 simultaneous nukes going off around the core. The three nukes carefullt placed around the core would implode the core and create another critiicality. But if the material wasnt immediately neutralised by the blast then it could make things worse.

Mind you, could it be any worse?! If we are facing extinction then what options do we have?

Its a tough call thata for sure, refferendum anyone?

no. the reaction you are talking about (water breaking
into hydrogen and oxygen) happens in the first
half hour of a nuclear reactor meltdown when the cooling
water goes much higher than operating temperature,
the zirconium (metal) casings around the fuel rods
start reacting with the water (at high temperature)
forming oxygen and hydrogen.

and, this is what happened when the 3 reactor building
had the hydrogen explosions in Mar. 2011.

Calling someone a shill serves one purpose, and one purpose only...to discredit the speaker in absence of the ability to win the debate.

If someone is really a 'shill' and purposely presenting incorrect information, then it should be easy enough to win the debate against them, should it not?

The truth of the matter, is when you call someone a 'shill', what you're really saying is 'I'm out of my league, so I'm resorting to Plan B - character assassination'
 Quoting: CleverMoniker 15254278

For as long as Atom Boy suppopts nuclear power, and specifically TEPCO, he will be the enemy and considerd a shill.

It does NOT take a SCIENTIST to realize that we A. Cannot control nuclear power. B. Cannot control natures power. C do not NEED nuclear power and D. NUCLEAR POWER IS NOT SAFE.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1546575

Well said AC. No disputing this. We ALL see it.
Fundamental points being overlooked in this debate. Once again common sense has been the first casualty.

From the comments area of the video:

... think it means it's no longer in the corium 'blob' state but capable of traveling into the earth's mantle in a stream-like state; which is much worse than any previous worst case scenario. There will be no remediation possible; resulting in radiological contamination of underground water-ways (interacting ocean and fresh-water aquifers) within this entire region, for hundreds-of-thousands of years.

Given the amount of energy needed to maintain a liquified condition without significant surface cooling is unusual. Classical thermodynamics has left the building…

Review your information and your physics.

There's nothing in Chernobyl "still burning down to the Earth's core" (See a simple reference: [link to en.wikipedia.org] ) because the fission melting core with the surrounding materials (corium) is able to reach a depth of dozens of meters, but no more: the corium dissipates its thermal energy in the surrounding material, breaking up and solidifying (See, e. g. [link to en.wikipedia.org] ) Of course, if the melted core reach enough quantity of underground water: fireworks!

Be serious! "The China Syndrome" scenario is a fictional one (a movie) without connection with reality. The real problem with the Fukushima accident is the radioactive contamination of the ground (the less important), the air (very important) and the sea (this could be a global catastrophe). This later could cause a huge impact over the marine ecosystems (plankton and subsequent food chains), and consequently, over the global food reserves.

And, BTW, in the worst scenario, you, the USA, will suffer the most dramatic consequences (after Japan): there is a spot of radioactive contamination that goes to your west coasts by ocean currents. If you want responsibilities, ask for explanations to the General Electric, the firm that designed the reactor (poorly), and to the TEPCO, the company that compromised with that.

Good luck!.

I predict no more explosions what so ever, but possible increasing releases of steam and fine nuclear particles, seen as "smoke".

The risk is VERY real, but the lack of drama will allow them to continue to do nothing.

Water will keep it's distance from very hot materials. Water can develop explosive vapor only if it drops down into a previously dry and hot chamber... and that would not happen here... unless...
