If it came down to one round, i'd definitely go .45

If it came down to the capacity of the respective calibers in their respective guns, i'd go 9mm, with some new gen JHP ammo in it.. and hi cap mag obviously.. (or else my point is moot)

most 9's are quicker on point before and after first round, and can put more shot placement on target in a given time.. Most .45's are more power on target, IF you make that first shot..

just what I've noticed over the years....

Get one of each.

.357 requires a barrel longer than 3 inches to achieve anything more the .38 special +P velocities, .38 special is slightly weaker than 9mm.

Bullet diameter and bullet weight are more critical than velocity. I would opt for at least a 10mm Auto. First centerfire handgun I ever bought was a Browning P35. It was the only 10+ magazine piece at the time. I was in highschool, think my Mom signed the paperwork for me...

Sold that pistol to buy a nice stereo when was in college. When bought another, went Colt Goldcup series 70 and never looked back. Used to shoot .357mag cases off fencepost at our old ranch with the goldcup and my cast bullet handloads...

The .45acp is tremendously versatile, but had I not had the gear, might've gone 10mm Auto. Just weren't many around when began buying seriously and I knew what the .45acp could do.

I would go 10mm Auto for all-around use and get a basic handloading setup to make practice rounds. Stay with 180gr or heavier bullets. Fully jacketed with flatpoint or truncated cone design will feed flawlessly and not deflect of fail on impact.

I prefer the 1911 design Colt, Kimber, Springfield-Armory, S&W, maybe Dan Wesson as Best Of Show.

.40 is only a little more powerful than 9mm. with 9mm you can get a lot more powerful ammo that will do the job.

Don't limit yourself to just these 3. There are many good posts here regarding revolvers, semi autos, calibres, capacity, etc....

If not sure yet, go to a range and try out different types and brands. Main thing: stick to the name brands. Find a few that fit your hand comfortably and if they are easy to conceal/carry (if that is an option you are considering). then test them out.

Some frames will have more or less recoil than others. Sometimes the brand may determine it, sometimes what it's made frame (steel vs. poly frame). Do your homeowrk, ask questions, then go try a few out.

Find one that will do the trick for you. Stay above .38 Special in calibre as those rounds and higher are best for home defense.

I love revolvers and semi autos. But for me, and what my needs are at this time, I got a Ruger P95. Love it. But my first love is the .357 revolver.

Also ask the people at the gun range as they can asnwer your questions, and show the guns at the same time for you and that sometimes is very helpful as well.

If you want a gun for SHTF, Glock is the way to go, 9mm is available everywhere, Glocks are very reliable and plenty of spares.
Other guns could be nicer in terms of grip, setup, etc, and even be as reliable as a Glock, but is more difficult to get spares. Stuck with what is plentiful in your area.

I Just bought a Taurus 809 9mm 18 rounds. Came with two clips and a brush nice case and two differnent grips i can switch out shoots real good i like it.

Glocks are way over rated.

The real people stopper is a 45.
If you are a woman then 9mm.

I went for a Springfield Armory XD 45 5" tactical with a PHYSICAL SAFETY. SA had just won a contract and part of the contract was to add a physical safety. They just started making these not too long ago.

Very nice pistol and with a heavier spring you can run it up to 45 super levels. Comes with 2 13 round mags.

I know people with glocks say oh the safety is in the trigger and thats all you need, and that just BS. A physical safety is much safer and if you grab the gun and pull the trigger with the safety engaged it will not fire. Cant be said for a glock.

Second that right there. The wife carries an Sr9C and I have the P345. Ruger makes a good cheap gun.

So sad that the Brits used to be renowned for their fighting spirits.

Here is the protocol,
Smith and Wesson 357 magnum, model19
Kel-tec, or similar, small , reliable, cheap 9mm as a close battle back up
Carry a minimum of three large survival type knives
Have eye protection handy
Own a 12 gauge , "defender" type shotgun
Own a 30-30 lever action " marlin" rifle
And , of course, have a Bushmaster c15 ,with 10-30 round magazines at the ready

I own a glock 17 and I wouldn't trade it for the world. The 9mm is cheap and plentiful, making it practical to train with and also widespread in any SHTF scenario. With the 9mm, you also get higher cap magazines, and if you're REALLY worried about stopping power (you shouldn't be) just load it with HP.
