Anonymous Coward User ID: 1548467 United States 05/15/2012 12:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You might want to consider a .40 Smith and Wesson caliber instead of the 9mm Quoting: Marblesonac There is a reason many police departments gave up their 9's in favor of the .40 Other than that, go with the gun that fits you better and practice with it often. Ditto Go witht he Glock Model 22 Gen 4. Adjustable grip. Same bombproof action. You will not be sorry. |

The 9mm is good at penetration and good all around but for defence I would def use some good Hollow point ammo!! Quoting: El Gato Thats why you use hornaday ballistic tip!!! Does the same thing the black talon does except in a 9mm. The round expands the same way in talon claw design!! |

(or else my point is moot) most 9's are quicker on point before and after first round, and can put more shot placement on target in a given time.. Most .45's are more power on target, IF you make that first shot.. just what I've noticed over the years.... |

riseagainst User ID: 7927498 United States 05/15/2012 12:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Personally i hate the feel of Glocks as well, but they are the AK47 of the pistol world, totally reliable, which is what you want for defense. The last thing you want is a jam at a critical moment. That said, you shouldn't have any trouble with the M&P either and it's a bit more comfortable to hold. Quoting: <FOCUS> 660580 I own a glock 19, Ruger LCR (Lightweight compact revolver) and a Keltec PF9. Out of the 3 the revolver is the most reliable because it's a revolver. The Glock is the most accurate, especially at longer ranges, which you probably won't have to worry about anyway. most gunfights occur in under 10 ft and are 2-3 shots long. So that tells us you probably won't have to worry about the large mag capacity either. Look into revolvers, you might just end up with one. On a side note, the LCR is a .357. more stopping power as well. .357 requires a barrel longer than 3 inches to achieve anything more the .38 special +P velocities, .38 special is slightly weaker than 9mm. |

Lester User ID: 16102276 United States 05/15/2012 12:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bullet diameter and bullet weight are more critical than velocity. I would opt for at least a 10mm Auto. First centerfire handgun I ever bought was a Browning P35. It was the only 10+ magazine piece at the time. I was in highschool, think my Mom signed the paperwork for me... Sold that pistol to buy a nice stereo when was in college. When bought another, went Colt Goldcup series 70 and never looked back. Used to shoot .357mag cases off fencepost at our old ranch with the goldcup and my cast bullet handloads... The .45acp is tremendously versatile, but had I not had the gear, might've gone 10mm Auto. Just weren't many around when began buying seriously and I knew what the .45acp could do. I would go 10mm Auto for all-around use and get a basic handloading setup to make practice rounds. Stay with 180gr or heavier bullets. Fully jacketed with flatpoint or truncated cone design will feed flawlessly and not deflect of fail on impact. I prefer the 1911 design Colt, Kimber, Springfield-Armory, S&W, maybe Dan Wesson as Best Of Show. |

CobraKhan User ID: 1569528 United States 05/15/2012 01:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm getting a gun for a couple of reasons. For home defense, and just in case the SHTF.I know alot of people are gonna say get a shotgun...but it don't want to carry around that big gun. So I am getting a 9mm. Originally I was wanted to go with a Glock 19, its got great reviews all around. Then I considered a Walther P99..NOW I'M thinking I will go with a Smith and Wesson M&P 9. The thing I the Glock 19 has a 15 round magazine, but holding it feels meh. The M&P is only a 10 round magazine...but the grip feels amazing, its just so comfortable to hold. Anyone have any gun advice between those 3 guns? Quoting: SkullOrchard Don't limit yourself to just these 3. There are many good posts here regarding revolvers, semi autos, calibres, capacity, etc.... If not sure yet, go to a range and try out different types and brands. Main thing: stick to the name brands. Find a few that fit your hand comfortably and if they are easy to conceal/carry (if that is an option you are considering). then test them out. Some frames will have more or less recoil than others. Sometimes the brand may determine it, sometimes what it's made frame (steel vs. poly frame). Do your homeowrk, ask questions, then go try a few out. Find one that will do the trick for you. Stay above .38 Special in calibre as those rounds and higher are best for home defense. I love revolvers and semi autos. But for me, and what my needs are at this time, I got a Ruger P95. Love it. But my first love is the .357 revolver. Also ask the people at the gun range as they can asnwer your questions, and show the guns at the same time for you and that sometimes is very helpful as well. Good luck in your search. |

If you are a woman then 9mm. I went for a Springfield Armory XD 45 5" tactical with a PHYSICAL SAFETY. SA had just won a contract and part of the contract was to add a physical safety. They just started making these not too long ago. Very nice pistol and with a heavier spring you can run it up to 45 super levels. Comes with 2 13 round mags. I know people with glocks say oh the safety is in the trigger and thats all you need, and that just BS. A physical safety is much safer and if you grab the gun and pull the trigger with the safety engaged it will not fire. Cant be said for a glock. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14924620 So sad that the Brits used to be renowned for their fighting spirits. They are just jealous as they don't have a Constitution like ours and a Bill of Rights that allows us to defend ourselves. To either protect our homes and families from criminals or to safeguard ourselves from a tyrannical government. All they can do is whine and cry and call names. Probably not old enough to remember their own history that the US had to come and help them defeat Germany by providing them with destroyers, munitions, etc... Oh well. Gotta go. I have a dental appointment. You know, the kind that actually cleans teeth, make sure they don't look like they are going to fall out of my skull when I turn 30. Have a good day. |

The 9mm is cheap and plentiful, making it practical to train with and also widespread in any SHTF scenario. With the 9mm, you also get higher cap magazines, and if you're REALLY worried about stopping power (you shouldn't be) just load it with HP. |
