Lovett in Timberline Lodge, Oregon for National Geographic News Published May 11, 2012 An as yet undiscovered planet might be orbiting at the dark fringes of the solar system, according to new research. Too far out to be easily spotted by telescopes, the potential unseen planet appears to be making its presence felt by disturbing the orbits of so-called Kuiper belt objects, said Rodney Gomes, an astronomer at the National Observatory of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. Kuiper belt objects are small icy bodies—including some dwarf planets—that lie beyond the orbit of Neptune. |

Other space scientists say Gomes\' findings may be a lot of hot air and aren\'t sure his calculations support his theory. [link to now.msn.com] |

[link to blogs.discovermagazine.com] free-floating planets in the Milky Way may outnumber planets orbiting stars, and even be more numerous than stars themselves. It’s an amazing result! The most likely scenario is that these planets formed in solar systems similar to ours, but got ejected due to gravitational interactions with other planets in the system. These planets get literally tossed out into space, wandering the galaxy forever |

Recent studies have estimated that a few billion such planets could be in the galaxy. The authors of the new study think that the number could be up to a hundred thousand billion, of these free floating planets, in the space between stars. [link to planetsave.com] |

If the planet came within about 0.01 light-years of Earth, it could even be observed from the ground, Abbot and Switzer suggested. [link to www.wired.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 7902174 United States 05/20/2012 06:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | WRONG!! Your apparently uneducated when it comes to this type of thing. The media isn't going to cover something like this. Why? Well, for one.. the government has put a 'blackout' on the subject which pertains to ALL mainstream media outlets. They can't and wouldn't let information out, about a possible E.L.E. too far before the "event" were too take place. Why? Well, use your brain for a second.. I realize it might be hard for you to do so.. considering the comment you just made.. but, the fact is.. is if they were to publicly announce such information.. it would cause MASS hysteria, chaos and riots and God knows what else. So please, if you don't know what your talking about... leave the subject alone. Thanks. |
