Re: Top 10 Medicinal Plants?
This thread covers it, but there is still so much more.

Your creators have given you life, use it or be burned by the sun.

Cayenne though, on top.

And at first I thought the person saying COCA/OPIUM was trolling/being a fucking idiot.

Then I realized I have had broken bones in which case I was made sick from state given drugs.

If I just smoked some opium in nepal I'm sure I would've passed out and woke up having slept the pain off.

The coca tea leaves that you can drink in mexico or bolivia (around the world) helps with digestion, wakes you up, doesn't give you the jitters, doesn't give you brain fog, doesn't hurt the liver or kidneys, doesn't cause neurological damage with long term use.

Dependence is in the mind of the user. Beyond that.

Earth's literal garden is beyond anything any man can produce.

In fact, everything that is produced and sold for profit is more harmful than anything in nature. By the production of the drug as well as the effect on your body.

What would you choose as you top 10 medicinal plants to grow?
and WHY :)

also pick 10 things that YOU could grow in your zone.
picking something like an exotic mushroom is not going to do any good if you live in a temperate zone.
be realistic.

Here's a REALLY good book, may be rare/out of print now (I got my copy in the 70's) but I'll bet you could find it online: "Back To Eden" by Jethro Kloss. It gives the info both ways, the name of the plant and what it's good for, and then what's wrong and which plants will help.

Really depends on what your issue(s) are.

Some people will do better with an anti-cancer regimen, some with anti-inflammatory herbs, some need more immune-boosting, some need more nutritional boosts.

The best herb garden, if you are going to plant one, is going to be with those you use very often, because the handfuls of bright, fresh herbs eaten frequently will do more good than something you use once or twice a season.

Re: Top 10 Medicinal Plants?
The top ten medical plants i am currently growing are:
1) echinacea(several varieties. I have the basic for harvest and several endangered ones to help protect the species)

2)golden seal

3)yarrow

4)roses (rose hips are great in vitamin C)

5)elderberry

6)comfrey

7)mint (spearmint and pepper mint)

8)a slippery elm tree

9)wild garlic

10)sage

I would suggest getting a medicinal herb book and look what grows good in your area. It can be a fun hobby with a lot of benafits.

Also, if you are going to pick wild herbs, ONLY PICK NON-ENDANGERED ONES AND FOR EVERYTHING ELSE ONLY PICK AT MOST A 3RD OF WHAT IS THERE AND SPREAD SEEDS OF WHAT YOU ARE HARVESTING AROUND! That is why this stuff is endangered in the wild. People over harvest rather then grow themselves and wipe it out. Every year i take my excess seeds and try to reseed areas but they all get wiped out. Alternative medicine people need to start being sustainable. It is most irritating. rant

Re: Top 10 Medicinal Plants?
for me, hands down, feverfew. it has almost totally stopped my all-too-regular migraine. used to get one every couple of weeks and now maybe every 2-3 months, sometimes longer

i take echinacea too, when necessary. definitely kills 7/10 colds dead in their tracks. and failing that, makes the symptoms much more bearable
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16430231

Vitamin D is way better than echinacea. You rarely ever get sick plus it does so much more too.

I would say aloe vera. It's great for sun burns, cuts, and your skin in general.

Re: Top 10 Medicinal Plants?
I had to go downstairs and grab the book from my medicinal botany class, "Fundamentals of Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy". A few of these may be illegal to grow in your area, but due to their medicinal qualities, they have made the list none the less..

Not in any order and more then 10, but did not go through the time to narrow down (this would have to be done based on need and location) Atropa belladonna, Ephedra sinica, Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort), Papaver somniferum (opium poppy), Echinacea augustifolia, Ginko biloba, Menthae pipitae (peppermint), Panax ginsing, Cannabis sativa, Valerianae radix,(Valerian root), Ginger, Allium sativum (garlic), Thymus vulgaris, Salviae folium (sage), Sambucas nigra (elder flower), Lupuli flos (hops), Malaleucae atheroleum (tea tree), Vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry), Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Capsiucm frutescens (chilli pepper), Aloe vera... There are so many more also very useful plants, but there is a good start.

opium poppy
boneset

That's just what I'd grow because you don't find it wild much here.

But there's tons that I wouldn't grow because it grows everywhere and is there for the taking.

Mullin
Dandelion
Tansey
Horsetail
angelica
etc

Cool topic.

comfrey = complete liver shut down ~ poison. worse than cancer chemo on the liver.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16140168

nonsense. comfrey is not poison. research has indicated that if ye feed rats enough comfrey ye can induce cancer. and the same elements in comfrey can be found in tylenol. and several other herbs.

anything can harm ye. use some sense, do some research, don't just assume all will be well and ye should have no problem. comfrey is too valuable a medicinal herb to reject it out of hand.
