I have never been a sheep, I'm very intuitive and highly logical and I can easily see through smokescreens. I'm an original and independent thinker and not good at being a follower. My neighbor…..

Every morning he would raise the American flag on an angled flag pole affixed to his front porch. Always at half-mast when flag order of the day deemed. In the evening he
faithfully lowered the flag like clockwork.

There came a time the flag became tattered, worn, and pale.

Weather abused fibers degraded in acceleration from the toxic trails of chemical plumes. Torn, riddled with holes, its thread losing color. One could swear this flag had witnessed battle. Figuratively, this flag had witnessed many a war....some wars just....most of them not.

He decided the right thing to do was to give the flag a proper burial. If anyone knew protocol for honorably retiring the flag it was my neighbor.

As the flag burned, using a rolling technique as the fringes of the flags fibers burned,
he would coil the flag into its final resting position.

Another neighbor, nosy type, called the police reporting a man desecrating the American flag.

A young police officer shows up and immediately tells the neighbor to stop what he is doing. My neighbor refused and asked the officer to get off his property.

The rookie not knowing what to do, called for help and a senior officer arrived on the scene. My neighbor told the older cop that he is in within every right to burn the flag and that there is not a thing they could legally do about it.

The older cop takes the rookie aside, whispered some inaudibles to him, and then both departed quietly.

I don't believe in burning the American flag. However, I do believe in having the freedom to burn one -- be it in protest, burial, or by accident. The flag can burn without fear of persecution, arrest, or conviction.
