Why and when exactly did rock and roll die?
Was it somewhere around 92-93? I thought grunge was just a phase but I think now it was the death knell.

It's just been imitated for many years now. Punk was probably the last real offshoot.

1984 was the last year for rock and roll.

Rock and Roll is "white" music and in 1984 everyone switched from listening to rock to new wave.

Rap was also starting to become mainstream so alot of whites turned to that was well

Re: Why and when exactly did rock and roll die?
Dee Snider explains it simply on this video clip. He's talking about what killed heavy metal, but his explanation pretty well covers why rock and roll died.

Its no longer profitable to make intelligent or sophisticated music. The discretionary $$$ for music is with the idiot 11 year old, who'll buy any Bieber, Rebecca Black or hip-hop bullshit they push down their throat.

Rock hasn't died, it's just fallen out of the mainstream, and that's fine. Mainstream rock sucks. I listen to everything from the Beatles and Sabbath to Beck and Slipknot. Rock is still there, believe me.

Re: Why and when exactly did rock and roll die?
Since the only rock and roll still going is the old bands that still tour - whose members are over 50...and many into their 60's now. The question is - who's out there that's going to pick up the torch and save the genre?

Do the 30 and under group even know what rock and roll really is?

In the early 90's the record industry discovered the huge profit potential when style over substance became the priority.

Now, no-talent hacks who do what they are told and look good for the camera are preferred over real talent and real people. This works great because the general public are a bunch of brain-dead, ignorant, conformist twits who like whomever the record industry and their multi-million dollar P.R. campaign tell them to like.

Somewhat related, in that the internet probably had something to do with it. Before that, you actually had bands who actually tried to make great albums, and those who in the record industry who actually tried to find talent that could do this. Nowadays its that they try to find any tard who can make a youtube video and mildly entertain some people for a little bit, so yeah, the model has changed.

Re: Why and when exactly did rock and roll die?
It also depends on what one defines as rock. Are we talking about zepplin rock? or sabbath rock? AC/DC rock? Nirvana rock? Rock is still very much alive.

Yes pretty much, his influence did last for a few more years with some fairly excellent bands like Soundgarden, STP, and Blink 182, but yeah that was pretty much it.

Whether you like it or not, at its core, hip hop culture and rap music is an intellectual, conscious movement centered around freedom of speech and expression. It knows no race, no religion, no dollar bill signs.

The same thing that killed rock 'n' roll is what killed conscious rap; the music industry, money, greed, fear...

Oh sigh, quit your romantic mushy fantasies of hip hop music. But you are correct in some respects possibly, they don't make em like Wu-Tang anymore, but then they died off at the same time, early 90's, so same difference. Any hip hop after that is utter bullshit.

money is the answer its a bit like the greedy money makers changed the game wanted to launch a new thing
trashed the old and put all their priase in shit
that was a abubble of nothing
now no real critics just creeps selling things to make money
by praising anything
no incentive
invented fashion dictates
tell everyone they can be a star
no talents encouraged no talent needed just funny money

Wu-Tang is always good I still play them often. But I would never put any member of the Wu on the same page of Nas, Common, or even Mos Def.

And Black Hippy. They are going places, real soon. The west is coming back strong. As well as New York.

GTFOH, how dare you compare those talentless POS like Nas, Common and Mos Def to Wu Tang, barf. As is clear from this thread, great music died out in the early 90's. Fuck, I was hoping great rock or music would come back, but nope, I have no more hope for that anymore as is clear from some of the reasons given this thread.
