No cloud dodging for me tonight, back home, broadcasting, and loving it. Here's a live view of that bright planet in the west, Venus. We'll take a look with a high magnification view in the LX200, a low magnification view with a widefield Orion ST-80 refractor, and a camcorder. The link and view is live now:

Why Venus is so bright these days if it is not a full Venus?

Back online now. Will now show the effect of seeing Venus out of focus and zoomed in with a camcorder; it doesn't show Venus' true shape, then we'll take a look at "overovexposed venus" which is not a "plasma light ship."

I'm seeing the very same thing through my Meade ETX over the last week. Its crazy to be so bright and yet crescent through the scope.

As you can see, Venus is about to set over the roofline, but the large shape you see when trying to zoom in on it with a camcorder is just an effect of being out of focus; that shape doesn't tell you anything about Venus' true appearance which you can see here setting and fading as it sets.

That's because you have been witness to the procession of Venus as it orbits the Sun. You see, for months it's been catching up to Earth as both planets move in the same direction around the Sun. Venus is closer and moves faster so it's actually catching up to us.

Soon, I believe next month, Venus will be nearly even with us in our orbits and Venus will be transiting the surface of the Sun as it moves between us and the Sun.

It's actually been quite the beautiful celestial spectacle featuring two Venus, Jupiter, and Moon conjunctions as well as a very bright Venus that is very close to us at this point in our orbits. And there's plenty more action to come as Venus approaches solar transit.

Could get twice as close, but Venus isn't as high as it was earlier in the year, thus the atmospheric turbulence you have to look through to see it is pretty bad and you wouldn't see any additional detail than in the close up view I showed which revealed its crescent shape.

I'll post the formula for Venus' brightness later. It's a dual function of distance and phase; distance rules the day for the most part, thus it is brightest when it is a crescent phase and close to us. Danjon determined a formula for calculating it based on phase and distance about 60 years ago using 335 observations made of it over 10 years time. It works very well.

Well, Astromut, I can't say that you completely debunked the existence of Nibiru, but you have certainly convinced me that it WAS, indeed, Venus.

So, without further ado.

I apologize. You were right. I was wrong.

It is Venus. It is NOT Nibiru.

That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but you have put my mind at ease knowing that Venus just appears a bit differently than before.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up and for the great thread/stream.

Now before anyone says anything, no, Saturn is not actually tipped over on its side. For one thing, the main telescope camera is twisted to one side in order to make way for the mallincam on the refractor above it, for another thing, I'm currently Alt-Az aligned, not polar aligned, so field rotation is a factor.
