A perhaps worthless thought here: if growth is lush or unusually lush a tree is going to turn off some leaves competing for sunlight, or tiny stem ding from blowing sand or tear can cut off water/nutrients to tender stems.
Trying to rule out a few common possibilities amid Other glaring evidence.
