People fear truth, because if the truth tellers are right they have to adjust their own views of reality. This is common of both those deeply into politics and deeply religious both. They'd rather just believe what they've known and been taught, rather than have to accept that what they've been told isn't true and that they've been believing lies. Change scares them, especially if they're older.
