My family had slaves... reading the family history is quite revealing. Seems my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather had approximately 120 slaves that he "purchased" (he called in "freeing them from the certain hardship that could be found)... he "bought them from a black fellow who brokered them from his black partners in Africa who bought them from the families who sold them off...

Yep... he brought them to his farm... educated them, fed them, gave them housing and paid them a small wage; always wondering what kind of life they would of had back in Africa where their own families sold them off for a bag of rice.

Funny thing happened during the Civil War... they didn't want to leave as this was their home and they were part of the family...holidays, sunday services, etc, etc...
