I have read the story and come to the conclusion that the woman put rocks in her pocket and they caught fire.

Phosphurus is always bound to other elements due to its reactivity. Makes me think of meth producers maybe leaving behind stuff as P is used in a reduction of iodine with ephedrine to produce meth. Strange indeed.

Doesn't even look like it.
More likely phosphorus.

Maybe buried in sand and she dug them out.

Re: Rocks from beach catch fire in woman's pocket
This exact thing happened to another woman a few years ago. I saw on a show on A&E about Spontaneous human combustion and a woman put some shells in her pocket from the beach that had sulfur in them and a reaction caused a fire in her pocket while she was a passenger in a car going home.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12177606

then it's not spontaneous human combustion, it's from sulfur shells. It's debunked spontaneous human combustion.

You know, this is weird. If it's true, why doesn't it happen all the time? Or why doesn't everyone know not to pick up the phosphorus laden rocks so that it's a well known thing to be careful of?

Phosphorus burns in air but not water. Rocks dry off in pocket and immediately burn giving off high heat. Turns into phosphoric acid which will dissolve skin to the bone... Nasty.

Re: Rocks from beach catch fire in woman's pocket
so i'm going with coated with white phosphorous--- highly-flammable material that forms NATURALLY. spark OR HEAT FROM FRICTION not just can, but WILL start the chemical reaction(fire) which will burn very wildly just like a road flare. she has second and third degree burns, stop/drop/roll didn't do anything--in a chemical fire it doesn't help--and he has second degree burns on his hands...so let's add it all together.
Earth has a mineral that we have already harnessed(phosphorous) and used for ages, which forms in the ocean, and burns way easy when in the atmosphere(out of water) and everyone gets spooked about the powerplant/meteorites/and aliens...ummmm...is 2012 really the prediction that society destroys itself with stupidity and paranoia??

Talk about a hot pocket....lol

This is very strange.

On a side note, I was outside a few minutes ago
and in the distance, heard Taps being played.
I've lived here a long time and never heard that before.
No military bases close except for a NRB about 10 miles

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman literally burned a hole in her pocket from rocks collected on a family beach trip to San Clemente. In an Eyewitness News exclusive, authorities say the woman suffered serious burns.

The rocks contain various colors - some green, some orange. There were seven of them altogether, collected by a San Clemente family during a fun morning at Upper Trestles on San Onofre State Beach last Saturday.

"The daughters were playing with the rocks, and she took them away, and I guess basically, they combusted in her pocket due to friction," said neighbor Jacob.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone said there were actual flames coming off the woman's cargo shorts.

"We found that a 43-year-old female did have severe burns to her leg, second- and third-degree burns," Stone said.

The incident remains under investigation. The county's health care agency says they're waiting for further test results on the rocks, but they believe two of them contained a phosphorus substance. The other five became cross-contaminated by being together in the victim's pocket when the reaction happened.

Phosphorite naturally occurs in the sea - [link to en.wikipedia.org]

Do a Google image search for phosphorite (for some reason it won't link here) to view many examples of oceanic phosphorite, some of which are brightly colored.

If a rock bearing methane clathrate in its interior ended up in the mix and was warmed up, it could also have put out flammable methane along a fissure and ignited by chemical reaction or piezoelectricity from the rocks knocking together.

Please...I mean seriously?

While plausible, what are the chances?

Obviously something weird going on, and despite the unlikely events which you describe...I conceed it is the best explantion so far.

Beats friction, which is absurd since every rock sorting machine and crusher in the world has never once had such and icident to my knowledge.

I was going to say that same thing ..

Can't imagine how that could happen .. been obsessed with stones, rocks, minerals, etc .. since a kid and I don't see this being fathomable ..

It takes a lot of work to start fires with stones ..

Who knows .. maybe she was running really fast and forgot to take the lint out of her shorts ..

5* thread op .. really cool :-)

The culprit could be dark matter breaking down the subatomic structure of the rocks. Perhaps a dark matter asteroid landed in the area where she found the rocks. Since dark matter is out of phase with normal matter, no one would have noticed an impact.

Just a few miles from San Onfre nuclear plant,...

but no, some phosphorous thrown out from an illicit drug lab seems like the most likely source.

This location is right next to the marine base. Chances are they were not rocks, but the unburnt pieces of incendiary devices that the marines drop over the ocean during training.

Once they washed up, were picked up and dried out they became flammable once again and set off by the friction in the pocket.

Seriously ,about those taps, were they, quick short ones, that started slowly and gradualy went faster and faster, almost reaching a continous tone ?

Cause I had a event (taping event) once when I was out camping in BC, in Osoyoos, by the border.

It happen early in the morning at around 500, and was like a low F. very deep penetrating sound, seemed to be coming from under, it was felt by everybody, even if they were sleeping, it woke everyone in my group, the sound went across my meat to bounce back out on my bones, it felt like!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16121191

Sorry, I should have been more clear about it.
And, should have started a new thread instead of throwing
it in this one but it had happened just half hour or so
before I posted and it was on my mind.
What I heard was the song Taps like they play at military
bases when lowering the flag or at military funerals.
It was just like in the video below.

Last Sept, I heard a series of booms about the same time
of night. (11pm) It was before all of the other events that
became viral early this year. I don't know if they were
some sort of fireworks or not but they sounded like cannons
to me.

After hearing Taps, I stood for a few minutes listening
and didn't hear anything else but the usual sounds.
Cars, dogs barking etc.

Taps
