Crime is down in Louisiana, but the state still holds the ignominious title of “the world’s prison capital.”

An exposé by the New Orleans Times-Picayune found that Louisiana incarcerates more people per capita than any other state or country in the world. One out of every 86 adults is behind bars, which is nearly double the U.S. average.

This can be partially blamed on the fact that in Iran, lashings are more common than incarcerating.

Cheaper.

the vast majority of people in these profit prisons are for victimless crimes, like smoking pot or having pot paraphernalia (a pipe).

it is immoral to sell citizens to private corporations.

I remember a country that used to do that back in the late 30's... what was that country? can't seem to remember...

oh yeah, Germany.

The prisoners need to be put to work if they want to or not. Don't feed them if they don't work. That'll make them work. Nothing wrong with that.

However...

The prisons being owned by private corporations.. the same thing just doesn't work. The statistics that the OP pointed out via that article illustrate WHY.

Not surprised to hear this. Much off what goes on in the judicial judicial system is specifically catered to powerful corporate interests who lobby for their own vested interest ($$$).

We kill people for traffic tickets, dialing 911, protesting, drug use, looking aggressive, looking black. Our government and police kill people to keep other people in check. We taser and beat homeless defenseless people to death for nothing more than being homeless. Iran is not the terrorist. The US federal government is.

I live in Louisiana I am luckily (for now at least) not incarcerated, I know this situation well. This state is polluted with police vehicles. All alcoholics seems to find a car to drive. The two are super popular to get inside Club Penitentiary. Sure they make profit. when they do, its turned around to invest in more cops and patrol vehicles. all to harass law abiding joe into breaking the law. basically, cops her are the oxen of the Court.shark
