JULIA Gillard will be late for her NATO meetings on Afghanistan because her VIP jet broke down in Townsville.

Ms Gillard was scheduled to meet the Secretary-General of NATO Anders Sodh-Rasmussen for talks but that meeting appears it will now not go ahead.

It is understood her plane developed engine difficulties whilst on the ground in Townsville, requiring a replacement VIP jet to be sent up from Canberra.

NATO leaders and countries involved in the Afghanistan campaign are meeting in Chicago this weekend to thrash out details of management of that country as the conflict winds down and in the period afterwards.
