Santander purchased Sovereign Bank a few years ago here in the north east. It's a fairly large regional bank extending half the eastern seaboard. I left it a year ago because it's pretty ghetto.

Listen up folks.
The UK government guarantee to protect savings won't mean squat if lots of banks go under at the same time, it won't mean squat in any number of situations - revaluation, devaluation, hyperinflation........... The government drew up some contingency measures a while back but wouldn't say what they were.
Use your imagination.
If you have some spare money sitting around for a rainy day - that rainy day is now.
Spread the risk.
Convert at least some of that cash to 'useful' things. No not the latest TV but practical supplies , tools and meds. 6 months down the line you may not be able to get your hands on the cash to buy it, you might not be able to afford it, you might not even be able to find it....

Now s the time to max out that credit card !!!

Maybe I get it today and get some physical Silver

so get a Santander bank account, deposit a 1000 euro the first day at the opening of the account.

get a credit card and max it out to 3K or 5K for buying gold silver juwels (easy to sell or go to a pawn shop)

the bank will go down anayway adn you never hear from them again...

then you try the next Spanish Bank till you have done em all
then the italian banks
and the greek banks

and so one

They certainly have not endeared themselves to the British public, or engendered any trust, so most people I know took their money out when the likes of Abbey National and Cahoot where taken over by Santander.. So it's not surprising the remainder are now following that lead.

Stop fearmongering, unless you're minted you have nothing to worry about. It will only effect (if at all ) the folks with more than £85,000 . Who's got that sort of cash except the rich folks. Unless the gov goes to the wall it's covered by them .

deposits held at the british operations of santander are guaranteed by the british government up to £85k.

if any uk bank hit the wall, the uk government would most likely take it over as what happened with northern rock in the uk and the irish banks were taken over by the irish government.
