Re: Weird behavior from the neighbor
I cannot help you but i had an upstairs neighbor years ago and every night for hours you could hear water being run or flushed and i mean 5 or 6 hours in the evening. Also this person walked across the floor in shoes again for hours didnt even seem to sit down at all. It was totally bizarre they never seemed to sit down not at all. Id go to bed about midnight and they would still be at it. No matter what room i was in. We used to hear dragging noises across the floor and i can only imagine a chest but seriously how many times would a person need to do that. She was the weirdest neighbor we ever had and we were never able to work out what she was doing. Try not to let it bother you too much i know its upsetting when people are weird like that.

do what I had to do once, Pad your walls and ceiling, use foam bed pads, sleeping bags, egg cartons, what ever you can find, top cover with sheet or blanket that matches your tast in color.

It's called gas lighting and you should look for pinhole cameras in your bathroom very carefully.

The intent is to make it appear you are insane. You've pissed on some powerful people along the way somewhere, perhaps with something you said or more likely something they think you have seen or are aware of. It is nearly always secret society related.
For it to have gone on as long as it has, they're not going to give up until you leave the community to take proactive measures to stop it. The feces on your bike is the statement to you that you have been marked, and riders of bikes often observe things that others on foot or motorized vehicles would never see

Re: Weird behavior from the neighbor
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

This started for more than 2.5 years ago. To make the story short, whenever I use the faucet in the bathroom someone else starts doing the same thing. The person even starts as soon as I enter the bathroom sometimes. Sometimes this is accompanied by bangings in the floor, knockings.

One time more than 2 years ago (after this had been going on for quite some time) I heard someone shout what sounded like "drink in the kitchen dammit!". Then I decided to call the upstairs neighbor. He said it was none of his business, that he had no right to complain and that my rinsing with water didn't disturb him at all.

At the time I also mentioned I have OCD. This to explain why I wash a little more than usual. After this someone started putting shit on my bike. Not sure there's a connection.

Also directly after this the flushing could be heard again. This even if I tried to make as little noise as possible.

Since then its been over 2 years and it still continues.

I can't be sure it comes from the neighbor above but one time he told me (without me asking) that the knocking could be his dog banging a bowl in the floor.

I've also asked several times after if it disturbs him. He's always said no. Still someone starts this flushing when I'm in the toilet several times a day. This also happens in the daytime.

So I'm not sure it comes from upstairs even if it prolly does. Also it can't have anything to do with the pipes. It's irregular and increases on occasion. Sometimes accompanied by other noises as I wrote.

So what the hell could be the purpose behind this? I have my theories but I've come to the conclusion no sane person would keep doing this for so long. I try not to let it get to me but it's hard especially since I have OCD.

What are your thoughts about this?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12820348

I think it´s impossible that one of the neighbors does that on purpose all the time.

There most likely has to be some other explanation. Maybe it does have to do with the pipes, which would explain why you hear the noises just at the same time as you open the faucet. Or the noise might always be there and you hear it only when you go to the bathroom. Or it might well be the dog, just as the neighbor said.

If you told them you have OCD, I think it is very unlikely that someone would be out there just trying to mess with you like that. Few people would be cruel like that. Even if someone were so inclined, this method is really time consuming and pretty much impossible to carry out for extended periods of time. It would certainly not be fun for the perpetrator... they can´t even see you. If, instead, they were annoyed by noise or something they´d just come and tell you it bothers them.

I would just do as little noise as possible and then not worry about the noise or the neighbor.

Re: Weird behavior from the neighbor
in plumbing terms, the knocking you hear is called "water hammer" you can google it...........i wouldnt worry too much about all the other things going on it makes life more interesting.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16356984

It isn't plumming related. I clearly hear someone banging on the floor or knocking on the walls. Also that someone starts rinsing (flushing?) with water almost as soon as i enter the bathroom. It's no mechanical thing. The intensity of the flushing increases sometimes.

It is someone doing it. Ok, it could seem lile I'm the one who is insane. Surely, if I would be hallucinating I would hear something more interesting than these silly and boring things.

On thing is clear... The person doing it can't be sane. No sane person, not for any reason would keep doing this for so long.

Also I hear NOTHING from my neighbors downstars. If I were to act like some nutjob because of them I would deserve to be shot. Now, the person upstairs can hardly hear more than I hear from downstairs.

So what do you make of this madness?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12820348

When you enter the bathroom you can hear the flushing. The flushing may well be going on even when you´re not there... but you wouldn´t hear it (or wouldn´t pay attention to it). If you live in a big building, it is very likely that there are people flushing the toilet in different apartments at just about any time.

If they did it on purpose, how would they know when you enter the bathroom? And how could they always be around to make the noises just when you enter?

If someone really did it on purpose, the person might well be disturbed. In that case, just be tolerant... and have compassion. He sure isn´t happy to have the problem.

Every time you use the bathroom, there are thousands of people around the World using the Bathroom at the exact same time as yourself.

Learn to ignore it. You are picking up the vibrational behavior of someone who is likely quite some distance away.

It is NOT the person upstairs, or next door, leave them alone, it could be anyone just about anywhere.

Re: Weird behavior from the neighbor
Its one of two things, and im betting its the first

1. your OBSESSING about your neighbors, it sounds to be COMPULSIVE somewhat and to some degree a DISORDER. If only they had a name for that.....

2. Dude upstairs knows you have OCD and is now messing with you to see how long it will take you to crack
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14513313

yeah, but if it's no. 2 then dude upstairs is obsessed to the point of possibly being dangerous, whereas OP just has OCD.

Whatever it is, if the landlord foots the water bill, he needs to clear y'all out! LOL

Re: Weird behavior from the neighbor
Op if you still visit his thread, I had a weird one once some 20 years ago.
The guy would come home every night and just play over and over and over and over all night that one same Madonna song, day after day night after night...just seemed to go on forever. Not the whole album, just that one song, it wasn't one of her hits either, it was some b side loser song.
One day I was waiting for him, I'd been drinking wine all day long and I was right pissed. I had a sure chip on my shoulder back then too. I was never in a good mood. Anyway, just like clockwork, he comes home...., I'm waiting..., music starts...., I take old rotory dial phone( good and heavy,solid).., and I just start bashing and smashing the thing, I hold it by the cradle for good grip and positive execution, and just bash the whole thing on the floor, cause I was in the upstairs apartment, ...soon the music stop! Next I went down there to confront him.., keep it down stop playing that shit! I say.
Next day, manager..,knock,knock..,bad scene.
Never again did I hear that song! Never again.

Moral: switch it up a bit, instead toilet, go to hardware store and buy several lengths of thick chains and start dragging back and forth and make some real curious noses see what he does....

Check back later with the results.

So weird you would say that. I have the same problem as OP, new neighbors moved in a yeat ago, and keep shuffling around outside the bathroom window EVERY time I go in there. Our houses are only like 8' apart. It's gotten to where I'll leave the lights off and use my phone as a flashlight, because I thought maybe turning the light on was triggering them. They fucking crunch leaves under their feet and everything - it's not even like trying to be sneaky. They just shuffle up to the window and then stand there. Fucking weirdos, man.

Anyway, I've had my house broken into, with nothing taken but every exit locked from the INSIDE. That means bolts slid over that can't be reached from outside. Curtains and blinds were all closed, which I never do. There was fresh sawdust on the floor like a hole had been drilled in the wall. Also, my computer was giving the screen of death.

You're right, it sounds crazy when you say it. But, whatever, people do crazy shit sometimes and it's not my problem but theirs.

OP, we should just start making horrendous noises in the bathroom. Scream, grunt, yell "Omigod", etc. If they're that bored and nosey, let's give them a show!

hmmm, crazy neighbour in yuor building. You know the only way to deal with this is to befriend them, no matter how wacky they are, always say hello to them, perhaps invite them around for a coffee. then they will start to forget their obsessive grudge they have against you and the harrassment will slowly but surely stop. no matter how wacky they are, I think you'll find any confrontational courses of action will just cause more problems. .

I have tried that. I phoned the neighbor I think (or thought) was responsible. That was like february 2010 after this had been going on for some time. The thing that made me call, was that I also heard something someone shout something that sounded like "drink in the kitchen dammit".

The neighbor said he didn't have any right to complain and that nothing I did disturbed him anyway. This was also shortly after my mother died so he lent me a book "to help me cope". I gave him som papers the landlord had given me about him playing loud music...so I actually did him a favor.

I also mentioned that I have OCD. Only to explain why I wash my hands a little more than usual. Actually I only wash thoroughly just after coming home or leaving and after doing no 2. Also I use "low volume" when I rinse so it takes longer time

Oh, well when I returned to my bathroom the noises persisted. Also the next day there was something brown on a bag I had on the handle of my bike. I didn't think it could be but it was. Day after that there was shit on the saddle and someone had even punched a hole. The remains of a dog poo bag was under the saddle.

At that time I contacted the very same neighbor. Said I didn't have the number to anyone in the house else which is true. He acted very nice.

Later as the noises continued I would come up to his door or call him. What irked me was that I thought he (or whoever does) thinks that I try to disturb people on purpose, which isn't true. I usually do the opposite except on those occasions I get too pissed.

The bike thing continued for a long time. Brown stains on different part when I took it in the morning. This even if I clean it before I put it there for the night. Saddle smelled of shit. Ended with me not using the bike anymore. Now it's rust and has a flat tire.

Also told him on one occasion about the choking smell of cigarrette smoke I've been getting of and on through the years. Prolly comes from a neighbor smoking with windows closed. About the smoke thing. As I wrote it's been noticable on and off since I moved in. In one room where it's been particularly bad there are only neighbors over and under. The apartment downstairs has had several different tenants through the years. Hence my conclusion.

I have not told them yet. I also get smoke in the apartment that is very annoying. I don't always get it. I'm pretty sure it comes when a neighbor smokes without opening the windows. Also pretty sure sometimes it's on purpose. Like when I wake up and my throat is sore and it's hard to breathe. Then I've been inhaling smoke for hours. I hate it.

Also the flushing. Still keeps going. My theory is the neighbor wants to find something I do that can annoy him. Since I generally make very little noise he picks the little noise it makes when I use the bathroom. I have asked the neighbor I think is responsible. This when the noises where accompanied with shouting. He was friendly and said he heard nothing. Still the rinsing/flushing goes on every time I use the bathroom even though I make as little noise as possible.

Also I wonder what I would benefit from understanding the behavior? The flushing/rinsing in itself is no big deal. I hardly hear it myself when I'm not in the bathroom. That's how I know that my own washing hands etc can't be disturbing to any sane person. Also that it has been going on means the person doing it must be utterly insane?

What's that? I do not wash my hands much more than the average person. Mostly just when I've been to the bathroom.

Also (and get this) nothing I have done can explain this behavior. Someone flushing with water (almost) everytime I use the bathroom is not normal. And I'm not imagining it.

You are getting mess on your bike after speaking to the upstairs neighbour. Upstairs neighbour has a dog. It would appear your upstairs neighbour finds your actions as excessive and therefore irritating - that is not saying that you are in the wrong though. It would seem he does not want confrontation but wants to let you know of his irritation. I think you already know this. Do you sometimes hear him go out - can you then see if it happens then? You have said you have already retaliated (by making more noise back) which will only have made the problem seem bigger. People can be very surprised how much noise can be heard by a neighbour - even if you cannot hear your neighbour below you. I don't think it is weird. Good luck but I think often the only solution for everyones sanity, is to move as it seems to be causing you an issue.

OP

In all seriousness, please talk to a therapist. Are you self diagnosed as OCD or is this a professional diagnosis.

This may be a combination of normal plumbing sounds and your condition exaggerating the situation.
