Whitney Houston was the best-selling album by a female artist in Canada in 1980s, beating the previous best-seller, Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual, which sold more than 900,000 copies in the country. Houston's debut became the first album by a female artist to earn the-10-times platinum mark―diamond level―for sales of 1,000,000 units by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) on March 31, 1987.[1]
Houston's first release, Whitney Houston, is the best-selling album by a female and a new artist in the 1980s, certified 9× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on October 6, 1988.[2][3] That has made Houston the first female artist to reach the level since the RIAA launched the platinum and the multi-platinum awards program, in 1976 and 1984, respectively.[4]
Whitney Houston holds the record for the highest one-week single sales by a female artist, with 632,000 copies sold of "I Will Always Love You" in the week ended December 27, 1992ㅡthe Billboard magazine issue date of January 9, 1993.[5]
"I Will Always Love You" was certified 4× platinum for shipments of over 4 million copies by the RIAA on January 12, 1993, making Houston the only and first female artist with a physical single to reach that level in the RIAA history.[6][7] According to Nielsen SoundScan, as of 2009, the single sold 4,591,000 copies in the United States, and became the best-selling single by a female artist, and overall the second, only behind Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997/Something About the Way You Look Tonight."[8]
In the United Kingdom, "I Will Always Love You" was the best-selling single of all-time by a female solo artist with 1.361 million copies sold in 1992/93, but the sales record was later broken by Cher's "Believe," sold 1.673 million units in 1998/99.[9] In Japan, the single was also the best-selling single of all-time by a foreign female artist at the time, selling 810,000 copies in 1992-93.[10][11] Worldwide, It sold over 12 million copies and became the best-selling single of all-time by a female artist.[12][13][14]
The Bodyguard Original Soundtrack Album set a record for the most albums sold in a single week since the Nielsen SoundScan introduced a computerized sales monitoring system in May 1991, with sales of 1,061,000 copies during Christmas week of 1992, becoming the first album sold over 1 million in one week.[15][16] Later, Garth Brooks' Double Live shattered the SoundScan-era record, selling 1,085,000 copies in the first week of its release, November 1998.[16] To date, only four women, including Houston, have notched million-plus weeks. Britney Spears sold 1.31 million copies of Oops!... I Did It Again in 2000; Norah Jones' Feels Like Home moved 1,022,000 in 2004; and Taylor Swift sold 1,047,000 units of her album Speak Now in 2010.[17]
The Bodyguard Soundtrack received the largest initial certification of any album for 6× platinum by the RIAA on January 18, 1993.[18] The record was broken by 'N SYNC's No Strings Attached, certified 7× platinum initially in April 2000.[19]
Whitney Houston hit the 10 million mark by the RIAA on January 25, 1994, and made it the first album and the first debut album by a female artist to attain the certification.[2] As a result, she also became the first female artist to have two 10× platinum albums with the album and The Bodyguard Soundtrack, earned the same certification peak in November 1993.[18]
In 1994, Houston received an award from the World Music Awards, for being the "Best-selling Female Artist of the Era."[20]
On March 16, 1999, when the RIAA launched the Diamond Awards, honoring sales of 10 million copies or more of an album or single, Houston received two diamond awards with her self-titled debut and The Bodyguard Soundtrack, becoming the first female artist to achieve that feat.[21][22] Besides Houston, as of today, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, and the Dixie Chicks are the only female artists with multiple diamond albums.
In November 1999, Houston and The Bodyguard Soundtrack, were named the "Top-selling R&B Female Artist of the Century" and "Top-selling Soundtrack Album of the Century" by the RIAA, respectively.[23]
The Bodyguard Soundtrack is the best-selling soundtrack album of all-time in the United States with 17× platinum certifiaction by the RIAA and sales of 13,125,000 copies, combined 11,815,000 units from SoundScan with additional 1,310,000 sold at the BMG Music Clubs.[18][24][25][26] The album also holds the title for the world's biggest selling soundtrack album of all-time with over 44 million units sold.[27]
The Bodyguard Soundtrack is the first pop album to sell over one million copies by a foreign artist in South Korea. To date, its sales exceeded 1.2 million in that country.[28][29] The album sold over 1.1 million in Brazil, becoming the best-selling album by a foreign female artist.[30] In Japan, it was certified 2× million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) in 1994, for the first time to achieve that feat by a foreign artist in Japanese music history, and became the best-selling foreign album with 2.8 million copies sold.[31][32] The record was later broken by Mariah Carey's #1's, certified 3× million in 1998.[32]
The Preacher's Wife Original Soundtrack Album is the best-selling Gospel album of all time, with sales of over three million copies in the United States and six million copies worldwide.[33]
Houston's rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner," performed by her at Super Bowl XXV in 1991, is the only version to be certified platinum, and it raised millions for the victims of 9/11.[

donna summer

Summer eventually became fluent in German, singing various songs in German. She participated in the musicals Ich Bin Ich (the German version of The Me Nobody Knows), Godspell and Show Boat. Within three years, she moved to Vienna, Austria and joined the Vienna Volksoper. She briefly toured with an ensemble vocal group called FamilyTree, the creation of producer Guenter "Yogi" Lauke. In 1971, Summer released her first single, a cover of The Jaynetts' "Sally Go 'Round the Roses", from a one-off European deal with Decca Records.[7] In 1972, she issued the single, "If You Walkin' Alone" on Philips Records.[7] In 1974, she married Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer and had a daughter, Mimi, the following year. Citing marital problems caused by her affair with German artist (and future live-in boyfriend) Peter Mühldorfer, she divorced Helmuth. She kept his last name, but Anglicized it to "Summer". She provided backing vocals on producer-keyboardist Veit Marvos on his 1972 Ariola Records release, Nice to See You, credited as "Gayn Pierre". Several subsequent singles included Summer performing with the group, but she often denied singing on any of the Marvos releases. The name "Gayn Pierre" was also used by Donna while performing in Godspell with Helmuth Sommer during 1972.[7]
1970s

While singing background for the hit-making 1970s trio Three Dog Night, Summer met producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. She eventually signed a deal with the European label Groovy Records and issued her first album, Lady of the Night, in 1974. The album was not released in America, but found some limited European success on the strength of the song "The Hostage", which reached number one in Belgium and number two in the Netherlands.

In 1975, Summer approached Moroder with an idea for a song she and Bellotte were working on for another singer. She had come up with the lyric "love to love you, baby". Moroder was interested in developing the new sound that was becoming popular and used Summer's lyric to develop the song. Moroder persuaded Summer to record what was to be a demo track for another performer. She later said that she had thought of how the song might sound if Marilyn Monroe had sung it and began cooing the lyrics. To get into the mood of recording the song, she requested Moroder turn off the lights while they sat on a sofa with him inducing her moans and groans. After hearing playback of the song, Moroder felt Summer's version should actually be released.

The song was then sent to Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart in hopes of getting an American release. Bogart informed Summer and Moroder he would release the song (now called "Love to Love You Baby") but requested that Moroder produce a longer version for discothèques. Moroder, Bellotte, and Summer returned with a 17 minute version and Casablanca signed Summer and released the single in November 1975. The shorter version of the single was promoted to radio stations while clubs regularly played the 17 minute version (the longer version would also appear on the album). Casablanca became one of the first record labels to popularize the 12" single format. By early 1976, "Love to Love You Baby" had reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, while the parent album of the same name sold over a million copies. The song generated controversy due to Summer's moans and groans and some American and European radio stations, including the BBC, refused to play it.[8] "Love to Love You Baby" found chart success in several European countries, and made the Top 5 in the United Kingdom despite the BBC ban. Other upcoming singles included "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It", US No. 80; "Could It Be Magic", US No. 52; "Spring Affair", US No. 58; and "Winter Melody", US No. 43. The subsequent albums Love Trilogy and Four Seasons of Love both went gold in the US.

In 1977, Summer released the concept album I Remember Yesterday. This album, again co-produced by Moroder and Bellotte, included her second top ten single, "I Feel Love", which reached number six in the US and number one in the UK. Another concept album, also released in 1977, was Once Upon a Time, a double album which told of a modern-day Cinderella "rags to riches" story through the elements of orchestral disco and ballads. This album would also attain gold status. In 1978, Summer released her version of the Jimmy Webb ballad, "MacArthur Park", which became her first US number one hit. The song was featured on Summer's first live album, Live and More, which also became her first album to hit number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, and went platinum selling over a million copies. Other studio tracks included the top ten hit, "Heaven Knows", which featured the group Brooklyn Dreams accompanying her on background and Joe "Bean" Esposito singing alongside her on the verses. Summer would later be romantically involved with Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano and the couple married two years after the song's release. Also in 1978, Summer acted in the film, Thank God It's Friday, playing a singer determined to perform at a hot disco club. The film met modest success, but a song from the film, titled "Last Dance", reached number three on the Hot 100 and resulted in Summer winning her first Grammy Award. Its writer, Paul Jabara, won an Academy Award for the composition.

In 1979, Summer performed at the world-televised Music for UNICEF Concert, joining contemporaries such as Abba, Olivia Newton-John, the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Rod Stewart, John Denver, Earth, Wind & Fire, Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson for an hour's TV special that raised funds and awareness for the world's children. Artists donated royalties of certain songs, some in perpetuity, to benefit the cause.

I think cause of death had a lot to do with it. Houston died in her bathtub with a cocktail of drugs in her system, and Summer died of cancer. Apparently, the media loves a tragic death that has scandalous undertones. Plus, Houston was much younger than Summer when she died, making Houston's death more shocking.

I've never been a fan of disco or pop music, but even I recognize that both Houston and Summer were very talented. It's a shame we have lost them.

As for their careers, I view Donna Summer as more of a pioneer then Houston. Summer didn't just coast with the trends; she was a trendsetter. Houston, on the other hand, was much more highly awarded and had more best-selling albums than Summer.

I really don't like doing this Houston vs. Summer thing. I think both can be appreciated, and there's no need to compare them like this.

I understand where you're coming from though, OP, especially if you're a Donna Summer fan. I was a fan of Brad Renfro. I thought he was just the most adorable kid in "The Client", and his death saddened me. He died within a week of Heath Ledger, and Ledger's death greatly overshadowed his, so much so that it was almost as if Renfro had never existed. I found this upsetting.

Because she was covering up something Obama was doing. The Media always wags the dog.

I really think everyone was waiting for Whitney to come back and she just lied and never intended to quit drugs, or if she did, it was too late for her heart.

Re: How come Whitney Houston got so much news coverage and Donna Summers didnt
That is a pretty easy answer, who was always in the media. Whitney she was suppose to make this huge comeback which didn't materialize. She was suppose to perform at Arista's big Grammy Party, and she died the day of the Grammy's. There was much talk about her up coming movie, and about her actions in the days befoe her death, and speculation around her death. We had to wait weeks for autopsy and lab results. In stark contrast Donna kept her illness underwraps, when she passed we all knew she passed of cancer, her funernal was private, as her life was.
Whitneys funernal and her life was a public spectiacal ! That is why she got more coverage.

And to the idiot that said Whitney has had a superior career, obviouysly so young moron who think record sales and awards deduce a superior career. Donna Summer was not only a superior singer, with better power and control of voice, her songwriting and her forward thinking will not only ensure that her mutsic is timeless.. but she died a alot richer because of her talent.

And the truth about her hating gay lifestyle is incorrect, Donna was a truth angel she hated and judged no one. The gay community or I should say those in the gay comminuty who started the rumours years ago had a problem with her becoming born again. That was always the real issue.. those of us who were there have always known that !

Re: How come Whitney Houston got so much news coverage and Donna Summers didnt
I think that Donna got MUCH less coverage because her life and personality weren't tragic enough for the public to LOVE. People love huge train wrecks. It's kind of sick how we get off on it but, fact is we do. Whitney had always been in the spotlight whether it was good or bad. Because Donna kept her life more private, the public didn't really see how tragic, at times, her life really was. Almost successfully committing suicide by jumping out of her Hotel window because she was fighting deep depression. It was in the late seventies to early eighties and she was on all KINDS of medications that screwed her up. Her born again Christian lifestyle came after getting off all her medications. She finally felt free and probably over did her born again lifestyle at first which, in my opinion, most of those people do. This is when ALL the rumors about her stating the disgusting rumors came about. She never had a problem with the homosexual lifestyle. She had gay friends!! All through her life! She even did an AIDS Benefit for the Gay Community. She always denied those rumors anyway and every interview I saw of her rejecting them, seemed SO very genuine. You could tell she was deeply hurt by it and sued the magazine after years of enduring the sick rumors. She was a wonderful and loving person but some idiot gays still think she was responsible for these statements. As a member of the gay community, I want to tell those particular people to get over it and learn your facts. This is all long history anyway but this was pretty much the "MESS" of a lifestyle that Donna had. She really lived a cleaner and more drama free life than Whitney. Whitney did fine for a number of years after her stardom but then became SUCH a mess that people loved it, felt sorry for her and blah, blah. Both deaths are very tragic. Cancer I'm SURE is no easy thing to live with and accidental drowning is also very tragic. It's nothing intended. While I never liked Whitney as a personality, I don't think she was a bad person. She made bad choices that did her in and as a result, the public got to enjoy the mess while it lasted and yet, expect a messy outcome. Donna's was unforeseen and her funeral was even kept private.

the owner of the rights to Whitney Houstons's recordings had more solid media ties than the owner of Donna Summer's publishing. Therefore better promotion on the "death sales" circuit.

It depends. If it was mostly good coverage, you could say she was useful to TPTB (or to those implementing the NWO) - those in control or the media anyway.- If it was mostly negative, she was a PITA to TPTB (or to those implementing the NWO).

Just my opinion of course.

I cannot believe the stupid comments on here. That being said... to person who said that Whitney music was better promoted after her death. Donna unlike Whitney owns the right to her music... from 1980-1991. So record companies cannot profit from her death... unfortunately that also means for her fans that the music is mostly out of print and unavailable... I guess until her family want to have it out there again.
