I believe both. The Brotherhood has always believed in reincarnation. Hence, it is only natural that they would always be on the look out for their reincarnated Bros. Maybe these same said embodiments of Hermes did not happen until or were not noticed until the Initiate was older rather than rite at birth.

I have researched this pretty thoroughly and when the Brotherhood was first formed in Thebes, you HAD to be one of the family. There was absolutely no outsiders allowed up until the 7th and 8th centuries where the Gentile builders under Hi-Ram were allowed to participate in building the Temple.

It was well documented that many of these same said descendants had a mythical birthmark described as Golden or an anchor on their thigh or an Ivory shoulder. As the Brotherhood had grown and so did the family descendants, it was said by Plutarch and Plato that this birthmark was your calling card to enter the secret mystery schools.
-------------------------------

Here is what Plutarch says about this Brotherhood;

Sparti, from the sown men, i. e. the armed men that sprang from the teeth of the dragon sown by Cadmus, from whom the oldest families in Thebes — a large part of the Boeotian aristocracy — were said to have descended. Something like this mythical birthmark had probably made its appearance on the body of a member of one of these ancient families. Nisibis was a Syrian city with an extensive commerce, with many Greek, and probably some Boeotian immigrants.

It may be that, in cases where the inheritance of a morbid physical constitution, or of proclivity to moral evil, seems to lapse in the first generation and to reappear in the second, the children of the diseased or depraved father have the physical or moral traits of their father, but are made and kept vigilant and faithful in self-care and self-discipline by the memory of their father's infirmities or sins ; while their children have the inheritance without the warning.

Demeter gave him an ivory shoulder; thenceforward the shoulders of his descendants continued to display a white birthmark

:Pythagoras: Pythagoras had a golden birthmark on his thigh

Ptolemy had red birthmark on his cheek

Judas had a birthmark

:Seleucus: Subsequent to Alexander's death in 323 Bc, Seleucus founded, in 312 BC the kingdom of Syria, which was transmitted to a long series of his descendants, each of whom in turn is said to have borne a similar birthmarkSeleucus had a birthmark shaped like an anchor. It was told that Seleucus' sons and grandsons also had similar birthmarks. The original Christian church of the first century used a sea anchor as its first symbol. I have noticed this "anchor" actually to be an ankh (eternal life) over a crescent moon, or Venus/Aphrodite, who is coming ashore in her ark, her scallop shell.

:Cross and Man: Arthur's name may be a form of the name of the Celtic sun-god Artaois (Artaius) since Arthur was born ... in Celtic Mythology with a similar birthmark [representing sun-spots]. Arthur's name is also a form of the Roman name

James II (Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, 16 October 1430 – 3 August 1460) reigned as King of Scots from 1437 to his death. James, whose nickname "Fiery Face" referred to a conspicuous vermilion birthmark on his face, had six sisters, all of whom married into various European royal dynasties.

I'm curious about this birthmark. I am descended from a member of the Bavarian Illuminati (great great great great grandfather), and I have only recently found this out, although it's been common knowledge that one of his son's (who became famous for blazing the Oregon Trail) was part of our heritage. Ironically, my family was forced to flee France after the Reveloution, having been double-crossed by Napoleon--one of your ancestors...but I digress. Is the birthmark a physical one, or is it something else?

The Birthmark is physical, but now with DNA, I AM sure they can pin point his descendants. Hence, it is my belief that is in the blood.

Interesting...I do have a birthmark, but it's on the palm of my right hand base of my little finger, with a corresponding one on the sole of my foot at the base of my little toe. Haven't checked my shoulders!

To follow up, I checked the backs of my right shoulder, and I do, in fact, have this birthmark. So does my son.
