Do We Have Any Musicians Out There? ?? 2 questions for you
To all the musicians out there. Ok,the first question is actually a multi part question.

How long did it take you to learn your instrument and are you self taught?

Was it a life changing experience? Has it enriched your life?

Have you been sucessful?

Ok, sorry. That was more than 2 questions!

20 yearslaying electric guitar...and still learning. It's a mountain you never stop climbing! Took me ten years to get my 'sound' and 'fingerprint' and yes, it takes that long. Good gear plays a huge part in your development too. No regrets for sure and I couldn't live without my guitars and amps! I gig fpr fun and extra cash so no, not a success in the rockstar arena...but I'm happy. :-)

I am trying to decide between getting an electric or an acoustic. I love both spanish guitar and things like tool, metallica, slipknot, rammstein & zombie. Write poetry and have dabbled in songwriting but never learned an instrument. Figure now is the time. It's calling to me.

If you start on an electric then you're less likely to give up after a few days once the novelty wears off. Parents make the mistake of buying a acoustic for their children who are just starting and the high action and string tension ends up hurting they're hands before they can build up calluses. It's also way more versatile than an acoustic if you have an amp.

Learning an instrument is an investment that takes a lifetime to master.
If you learn everything about how music works then you need to learn how the instrument works with the rules of music then you need to learn how to express yourself while ignoring the rules of music and playing with feeling.
It is a daunting task but very worth while it will help you learn even more about yourself.

I primarily play classic guitar, but some electric, too. Been playing for 20 years. It took about a year to really learn the instrument, i.e. theory, technique. I took private lessons, but had to geek out to get good. Yes, life changing. Yes, enriching. No, not professionally successful; but gigged for a living for a couple years.

Here's some inspiration for you. No amp, no distortion, no pick. And, she's blind.

I will have to disagree with that.
there is not a lick or phrase out there
that hasn't already been played.
You are copying whether you realize
it or not.

and some of the greatest out there
have copied phrases from others
only to add or subtract to make them
better.

Re: Do We Have Any Musicians Out There? ?? 2 questions for you
i learned to play piano/keyboard 15 years ago.2 years later learned guitar. 2 years later bass guitar. 1 year later start to write my own songs both in English and in my language after a year i learned playing drum.now i can record my songs and playing all the instruments myself just add some viola like instruments from programs...

if you dont have ear (if you cant sing a song,or keep the rhythms,or cant repeat a single tone that u heard) you will probably buy and instrument and will get bored after 1-2 months....

If i say changed too much it will be a lie,but...i played bass guitar semi-professionally at bars-restaurants-concerts,these changed my life for a while...but making money with music is hard, when you earn you are king, when you not u dont even find a few bucks to buy cigarette. So i decided to work in my field...

last words ; when you get bored at least you'll have an emergency exit door ;)

I think your questions are good.

I first picked up the guitar at the age of 11, and played around like an idiot for a year or so before my parents gave me an ultimatum: either take lessons or drop the idea all together.

So i took lessons. Best tjing I've ever done. So i'm thankful my parents supported my hobby. Then i babysat everyday after grade 7 to make some $30 a week, and saved up to buy my very own electric guitar and amp. The one I was learning on was an old lender from a neighbour.

Then only years later would I join a band, alongside some friends, and bid on an opening show for Quebec rockers KARWA... And won!
It was an aboslute wicked experience! Massive stage, super sound and prodctions team, we had about 1000 people at the gates as we were set to open for the main act! It was a blast i tell you!

I felt on top of the wolrd!

When does it become too late to learn, to become proficient? I know some basics like scales and reading music. I know my circle of fifths, I've taught myself songs on the piano, probably somewhere between a beginner and intermediate, but closer to beginner. I play a tiny bit of cello, but have the hardest time tuning it- that in itself can be a lesson. I also have a hard time keeping rhythm. I know....it's sad!

Would lessons from a professional be useful at this point in my life? Late 30's, not particularly talented, but I keep coming back.

Perhaps I should let it go... just enjoy those who are genius, who have played for years?

The music, it's so beautiful and sometimes is the only thing to keep me alive. And then I just want to kill myself because I can't play like that.

Not particularly talented....

Yip, it was too short, my Opinion is that it is wrong to play "only"
one Style, it is not wrong to learn a Song!

I play since 35 Years Strings and Key Instrument
and earned some Money by this too!

Now i play only Solo because it is cheaper
than playing with a Band and i love Ableton!

It's never too late to learn. Yes, take private lessons. Stop watching TV and learn a musical instrument instead. If you want to play cello, then listen to lots of cello music. Pick out pieces that you want to play. That will inspire you.

I'll just keep playing for myself then! Maybe if I wasn't born with inherent rhythm, then I won't be able hear that it's all wrong when I play!

I can't sing either. I guess I was born without rhythm AND born tonedeaf. It's sad, but I can write, and I can find terrible humor in ironies like that.

A cruel god, if it is a god, who hands out gifts to some, but not to others?

At least nobody told me not to play and sing, even if I'm no good!

I won't subject others to it, but I won't stop!

I really don't have a clue whether I will have any natural ability or not. The closest thing to playing an intrument I have done is whip nunchakus around. (Which I can do pretty well 2 at a time eyes closed).
I am not concerned about making money from it either. Although of course if anything led in that direction wonderful. For me it's about expression and creativity. There is a longing in my soul for a new way of expression.I have so greatly admired the guitar ledgends for so long.
