Re: Food/Grocery Doom
Kind of disturbing to read what you all eat. If you pay more for higher quality food now, you will save on doctor bills later. Who in their right mind eats KFC anymore? It's poison. Are you aware that non-organic chicken contains arsenic?? I would never eat non-rganic arsenic chicken or feed it to my children. Better to go without chicken if you can't afford it or wait for good deals on organic.

I grow my own vegetables and buy only organic eggs, chicken, and meat. Otherwise you're going to end up sick because the rest is all poison.

P.s. cereal is not good for your kids. Avoid grains as much as possible.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16342718

I'd love to be able to afford organic food, but right now I'm struggling just to be able to afford to eat at all. And before you say I should make sacrifices in other areas, you should know that I have already cut out every single frill from my life. There's no more left to cut. And don't even mention cutting my internet, because I need it to work. Every penny goes to pay for bills and food, and there is not one cent leftover. I do not go out to eat. I walk everywhere. I have no car and no fare for a taxi or bus. I also have no debts. I do not buy luxury items like soda. I'm eating rice and beans and the cheapest crap money can buy.

What's truly scary is that I make much more money than most Panamanians. The average Panamanian only makes $300 a month. I have no idea how they're managing to survive when even I'm barely scraping by.

I don't know what I'm going to do if food prices go much higher. I may have to cut back to 2 meals a day. There are no more corners I can cut. I am trying to solve the problem from the other end though by trying to make more money.

Before you go snidely making recommendations, you need to consider that there truly are those who cannot afford to follow your advice. And I believe this situation is going to get worse before it gets better.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16503745

Yup, just eat the best you are able to afford. And two meals a day is still good depending on what you eat. I eat 2 meals and snack a day and still feel full.
People eat so much food these days and it stretches the stomach out so it takes more food to make it feel full. Start eating less and the stomach will shrink to a normal size and just a little bit of food will fill it up. Eat potassium foods since our bodies need quite a bit of it (apples, potatoes, yogurt, bananas etc) and some protein each day. Eating good doesn't have to cost a lot, especially when you start eating better but less food. If you have some space you might try container gardening and just grow some veggies that are expensive to buy.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

Bananas are dirt cheap here, so I have the potassium food covered. Exotic fruits like apples are pricy though.

I've been getting my protein from eggs, chicken livers, and tilapia, all of which are cheap.

I'm growing squash, pineapples, and peppers in my large planter box. I'm also thinking of growing potatoes in bins indoors. I sprout my own alfalfa in jars in my kitchen. It's much cheaper than buying alfalfa sprouts at the grocery store, which sell for $5 in one of those little plastic tubs.

When I go to the grocery store now, I completely pass up all the aisles full of boxed and canned goods. I just can't afford to buy that stuff anymore. I hit the dried grains and beans section, then do the rest of my shopping on the outer edges of the store buying perishables.

There's a limit to the types of produce I can buy, since a lot of that is expensive too. I can only buy the cheap fruits, which are pineapples, bananas, mangoes, and papayas and the only cheap veggies are carrots, peppers, garlic, and snap beans.

Adding lime to corn turns it into vital B vitamins. it liberates the Niacin. Without this amazing scientific alchemy, Central Americans and South Americans would have starved and gotten b vitamin deficient Pellagra disease.

I eat whole wheat to get B vitamins and without it, id turn into a insomniac who looks like Im on crack. Been there done that with years of insomnia, Now I sleep like a baby

Few know that the number one cause of insomnia is lack of complex b vitamins.

BTW, I havent eaten whole wheat in four days and have been waking up in the middle of the night, tossing and turning, which is a sign of lack of vitamin B.

i can remember living in the canal zone back in the late 70's, lived on Howard AFB. I can remember eating bananas and mango's as a daily staple, but when you are a kid most anything would be fine.

Mango trees were every where and we had 2 banana trees in the back yard.

Yes, that is good advice. The tortillas themselves have little nutritional value, but experiment with filling them. Fresh avocado, chicken, veggies, rice, black beans, etc. There are no rules. You can make them so that the meal is a healthful one, and very filling at a low cost.

Yeah, its great, and very filling, I like the black beans and go out to lunch at Big City burrito a few times a week and request it, They top it over fried potatoes or rice . I order the Chicken Mole with corn salsa

Dunno your age, but some thoughts which might eventually be useful to you.

Sometime around age 35 many of us can no longer eat meats after 4pm without experiencing EXACTLY what you've been speaking of--waking in the mid of night and being awake--insomnia.

My doc told me to eat meat before 4pm--something to do with liver bile functions which shut down naturally then and resume around 4 in the morn.

He also suggested a bit of cheese at bedtime-something about the calcium assists sound sleep.

These two things work well for me.

I'm gonna try your whole-wheat suggestion, too!

Cant buy any warm/hot foods with food stamps.
Rarely is there one in the cooler thats cold.If it is in the cool sections its at least two days old. They dont cook nearly as many as the did in the past so rarely is there any leftovers of the warm chicken. My sister works in a grocery deli and she said its rare they have one left at the end of the day that they wrap and set in the cool section.
Personally I would rather see warm food bought with stamps than junk food but its not allowed.

Inflation is dramatically higher than what the government's reporting. That's why food prices are shooting up. Take a look at these charts. You'll see what the government's officially reporting versus the actual inflation number (in purple) which is substantially higher.

I do agree wit what you say, except I do feed my kids organic cereals some days. I myself am gluten-free but my kids are obviously very healthy with no leaky gut issues so they can handle grains. What do you feed your kids for breakfast? I am not a morning person so I don't like to wake up and cook eggs for everybody but I do that 1-2x a week. Otherwise it's cereal, toast or Buckwheat berry waffles.

I bought 4 organic chicken breasts from Fred Meyer the other day. It costs $15. With prices that high some of us who feel we need meat in our diets MUST eat the arsenic chicken. If I had the choice then yes, I would eat only the most healthy meats. As for KFC, that stuff is disgusting. If we stop by there I only get the coleslaw and mashed potatoes, no franken chicken!

Re: Food/Grocery Doom

She doesnt know how to make sauces and salsas.

These are simple to make and easy to experiment with. When our garden is fully producing, this is my favorite way to make salsa. I take 6 roma tomatoes and squeeze them to get the seeds out of them (you can dry the seeds for next years garden). I put 4 of them in the blender with a couple of tomatillos. I use several different peppers to give the salsa flavor depth. Use how ever many you like according to how hot you like your salsa. I use just the tip of a habanero, a few jalapenos and 1-2 serannos. I use 1/2 to a whole bunch of cilantro and some chopped yellow onion. Blend all of this up, add some minced garlic, lime/lemon seasonings of choice, I prefer salt, olive oil, cumin and a little crushed red pepper. I add the last two tomatoes and just pulse the blender to have some chunks in it. My family's favorite variation of this is when I add chunked avocado and mango to the blended salsa and stir. You can also add various vinegars (modeno is good) and you can saute some or all of the peppers, onions and tomatoes to add a variable flavor. The salsa by itself adds a TON of nutrition to your tortillas alone, a little beans and rice or meat will make it a complete meal.

You are correct about the grains! I don't do well eating a lot of grains but I do require some 2-3 times a week.

It looks like you are doing really good in the food department. Since bananas are cheap eat them everyday. I make them into smoothies. You can do that with the rest of the cheaper fruits as well. It is a good way to start the morning off. And potatoes are loaded with potassium and are very versatile and cheap. Look up the garbage can method of growing them. Grow some tomatoes which are also high in potassium.

You have got the protein covered. I hard boil eggs and they make a quick snack. I will even grind up the shell and add it to my smoothies for extra calcium(and other trace minerals). Yeah, it can be a bit crunchy but then I don't chew a smoothie.LOL

I really think you will be just fine with the types of food you can afford. Just look into different way to fix them so you don't get bored. And eat some garlic everyday for your health.

there's no reason to eat 3 meals per day. Eat two healthy meals instead of 3 unhealthy ones. Rice and beans is good for you, by the way. Cutting your caloric intake by 30% makes you healthier and extends your life. My recommendations are not snide. I feel really frightened for people who are living off ramen noodles and KFC. There are ways to be healthy without spending a lot.

Grow your own produce. If you don't have a yard, do it on a patio or balcony. If you don't have a patio or balcony, do it inside. You can grow sprouts indoors and they are actually healthier than full vegetables. Broccoli sprouts have more cancer-fighting properties than full broccoli. Get a sprouted and you'll have a full dish of broccoli sprouts in four days.

People think being healthy is too expensive or too hard. The fact is that you all like having it easy by eating fast food or packaged foods, you don't want to put in the work and time it takes to be healthy by growing your own. Eating organic doesn't have to mean BUYING organic. Grow organic.

What's so funny about this is I used to eat all organic. I lived in California for 10 years back in the 80's and did all my shopping at Bread of Life. I was drinking almond milk, eating stuff like Boca Burgers and Ezekiel Bread, and chowing down on all kinds of exotic organic produce. I also had a whole cabinet full of herbal teas.

I had two juicers, one regular and one for wheatgrass. I had this huge sprout garden in my kitchen. I was growing wheatgrass, barley grass, sunflower greens, and buckwheat greens on trays. I was sprouting alfalfa, clover, lentils, and almonds in mason jars. I was drinking lots of juice, and sometimes going on juice fasts.

That may have been why I jumped on you. I miss my old way of life.

The only sprout seeds I'm able to find here are alfalfa, and I am sprouting them in jars in my kitchen. It's my only source of greens.

I do have a little garden in the small space I have. My squash plants are doing very well, almost too well. They want to take over the whole garden. I have to keep moving the new vines away from my pineapples to keep the squash from strangling them. This is the first time I've ever planted squash, and I doubt I'll do it again. It's not a good crop to plant in a small garden.
