A Peruvian man had to have his penis amputated after it was infected by “flesh-eating bacteria” following an implant surgery is suing his anesthesiologist in a Miami courtroom for medical malpractice.

The state of Washington is paying $300,000 to a prisoner who lost his penis and a testicle to flesh-eating bacteria while in a state-run prison. The prison doctor misdiagnosed the infection (surprise!) and left the man to suffer the consequences of having his genitals devoured by hungry bacteria.

This report describes a patient with chronic liver disease in whom Aeromonas hydrophila sepsis developed following ingestion of fresh lake water. A hepatic abscess and bilateral calf pyomyositis, an extremely rare and previously fatal complication of A. hydrophila septicemia, subsequently developed. The patient recovered following bilateral fasciotomies and systemic antibiotic therapy with gentamicin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. No previous survivors of A. hydrophila pyomyositis secondary to metastatic infection have been described. A discussion of these rare sequelae of A. hydrophila septicemia and their effective management is included.

Medical language always makes me feel queasy.

Don't feel bad, in this instance it's pretty obvious that "fresh lake water" is code for obsequious amounts of semen. I think "most" of us are safe from this disease.

I called an old female friend in Atlanta yesterday and we spoke briefly about the flesh eating bacteria. She said her girl friends were getting a little worried about the "PENIS EATING VARIETY".

She went on to say that they were taking no chances and have bought extra vibrators just in case it becomes an epidemic!

Yes, this story is 10 years old, but is interesting in light of what officials are not saying now about "necrotizing fasciitis" (flesh eating bacteria).

Maybe they don't know! It seems they have a hard time diagnosing the thing - as was reported in all 3 cases, so it's likely they are not educated or experienced in this area because of it's rarity - although they also say it is not rare - so which is it?

As a rare flesh eating bacteria threatens the lives of three Georgia people, infectious disease experts say it is very likely the same bacteria that is lurking in the waters or soil in Hampton Roads.

“Once it gets into the tissue and the muscle, it starts literally eating the tissue up,” said EVMS Doctor Nancy Khardori. “They’re present everywhere. They’re in soil. They’re in water.”

Khardori told NewsChannel 3 the deadly bacteria, a rare form of Strep, likely infected the Georgia patients through a wound and started eating away at their flesh and muscle tissue.

“Anytime a patient gets injured, gets an open wound from bacteria from the water or soil can get in, we must think of these kinds of bacteria,” said Khardori, who said areas like Hampton Roads that are surrounded by so much water are more likely to see this type of bacteria, especially during the summer.
