May 18, 2012 [link to www.medicaldaily.com] The state of Washington is paying $300,000 to a prisoner who lost his penis and a testicle to flesh-eating bacteria while in a state-run prison. The prison doctor misdiagnosed the infection (surprise!) and left the man to suffer the consequences of having his genitals devoured by hungry bacteria. [link to www.naturalnews.com] |

A hepatic abscess and bilateral calf pyomyositis, an extremely rare and previously fatal complication of A. hydrophila septicemia, subsequently developed. The patient recovered following bilateral fasciotomies and systemic antibiotic therapy with gentamicin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. No previous survivors of A. hydrophila pyomyositis secondary to metastatic infection have been described. A discussion of these rare sequelae of A. hydrophila septicemia and their effective management is included. [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] |

Maybe they don't know! It seems they have a hard time diagnosing the thing - as was reported in all 3 cases, so it's likely they are not educated or experienced in this area because of it's rarity - although they also say it is not rare - so which is it? This article says that this disease can be transmitted! ----------------------------------------- Flesh-eating bacteria transmitted to nurse Published: March. 28, 2002 at 9:22 PM By ED SUSMAN - UPI Science News ATLANTA, March 28 (UPI) -- Concerned health officials reported a "unique" case in which the so-called "flesh-eating bacteria" -- invasive Group A streptococcal disease -- apparently was transmitted from an ill patient to a nurse.... ...Rarely identified as a disease which can be spread from one person to another, the case in a group home in Westchester County is moving state health officials to consider preventive antibiotic treatment for people exposed to the disfiguring and often fatal disease... ...Group A strep -- the cause of a far less serious and much more common illness, strep throat -- develops into an invasive, skin and muscle destroying disease known as necrotizing fasciitis for unknonwn reasons, perhaps as a result of a person's immune system acting inappropriately to the infection... ..."We were taken aback by this case," Stan Kondracki, an epidemiologist with the NYS Department of Health, Albany, said this week at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta... ..."We now believe that invasive Group A strep (Flesh eating bacteria) is a transmissible disease at very low levels and in unique circumstances," Kondracki said... ..."We are very concerned about the implications of this case. We think that the group home and long-term care facilities may be part of the equation and administrators of these facilities should be concerned if cases of invasive Group A strep occur..." ...He said he and his colleagues still are at a loss to explain why strep A, a ubiquitous infection, suddenly becomes invasive and deadly. "It is caused by a cascade of events that is not well understood," Kondracki said... [link to www.upi.com] |

They’re in soil. They’re in water.” Khardori told NewsChannel 3 the deadly bacteria, a rare form of Strep, likely infected the Georgia patients through a wound and started eating away at their flesh and muscle tissue. “Anytime a patient gets injured, gets an open wound from bacteria from the water or soil can get in, we must think of these kinds of bacteria,” said Khardori, who said areas like Hampton Roads that are surrounded by so much water are more likely to see this type of bacteria, especially during the summer.
