"Under my plan of cap and trade, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket." Senator Barack Hussein Obama, 2008

One day I drove by a windmill that's a couple of miles away from my house. It was a frigid morning, and the sun hadn't come up yet. So there would be no power from any solar panels.

So what was the windmill doing, absolutely nothing! Because the wind wasn't blowing, the windmill was standing still.

I'm not willing to freeze to death and go entirely without electricity on dark, freezing mornings.

If this Country would launch an all out Manhattan Project style assault to supplement our electric grid with Solar and Wind power we could see a remarkable drop in energy prices. But these Big Energy Companies don't want to give up their cash cow so they buy influence to suppress these other resources.

...They exist.

You should also supplement with hydro and geothermal. And use fossil fuels while building these to make a smooth transition.

By the way, modern solar panels do generate energy on cloudy days.

Re: Obamas WAR on COAL is about to hit YOUR pocketbook
First, 60% of all oil imported into the US comes from Canada, not OPEC. Second, the air quality overall is better than it was 40-50 years ago thanks to the on-going de-industrialization of the US. So, your air will be cleaner, but you will not have a job and will not be able to pay for the electricity at the prices they will be forced charge. You will likely die of exposure or hunger,,,you pick. Niether wind nor solar will get it done.

None of these events have anything to do with ecological factors. This is entirely a way to pick your pocket until you starve..period.

He was speaking about the reality that coal burning power plants needed to burn cleaner and use more efficient generators. The upgrades were going to cost money and the cost would be passed on to the consumer. Without the Gov. pushing for increased efficiency these coal plants would still be using 30's technology. They needed to be modernized into the 21st Century. He was telling it like it is. He wasn't blowing smoke up your ass. Coal is still in the equation. We cannot produce all our power with renewable energy alone. He knows this and it's part of his program. It just needed to be modernized to become more efficient.

Why don't you take some of the surcharges and taxes going towards supplementing the nuclear industry's coffers and put that towards working to have a modern, independent energy grid?

Would you believe that very few successful business ventures started with zero capital? Countries are like that too. But you can keep capital low at the start by starting with a small amount of production to begin with, then using the profits from those to produce more, step by step building up your resource base. This is basic business sense... it doesn't really work with nuclear plants, because even if they were safe or cost-effective once built, they cost massive amounts of money to build even one reactor, and will always continue to bleed money to deal with the permanent waste they produce, well after that reactor is gone. But with modern sources of energy, startup costs can be low, and there is no permanent bleed.

From the link:The market-clearing price for new 2015 capacity – almost all natural gas – was $136 per megawatt. That’s eight times higher than the price for 2012, which was just $16 per megawatt. In the mid-Atlantic area covering New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and DC the new price is $167 per megawatt. For the northern Ohio territory served by FirstEnergy, the price is a shocking $357 per megawatt.

Why the massive price increases? Andy Ott from PJM stated the obvious: “Capacity prices were higher than last year's because of retirements of existing coal-fired generation resulting largely from environmental regulations which go into effect in 2015.” Northern Ohio is suffering from more forced coal-plant retirements than the rest of the region, hence the even higher price.

These are not computer models or projections or estimates. These are the actual prices that electric distributors have agreed to pay for new capacity. The costs will be passed on to consumers at the retail level.

YEAH - let's all convert to Solar, but let's figure the cost first.

The DOE estimates the average home costs $25,000 to $30,000
to convert to solar panels, battery system, switch box, etc.
Some dreamers say homes can do it for $10,000, but that's
a bullshit, taxpayer-subsidized pipe dream.

There are 125 million homes in the US.

So to convert all of the existing houses in the US,
it would cost the nation $3.75 Trillion.
You cannot
do that from "surcharges and taxes."

IF you could somehow *SNAP* your fingers and do it ALL at
the same time, the US DOE estimates that a system that
costs $18,000 has a payback period of about 20 years.

Now, solar panels are said to be good for 25 years.

But as any solar panel installer will tell you, people
are lucky to get 8 to 12 years from mid-grade panels.

Now, remember that we're in the Obama recession and now
$16 Trillion in DEBT with high unemployment and high poverty.

Again, be realistic.

Again:

I have NEVER recommended relying on only one power source.

Solar makes fantastic sense...for Nevada. See Las Vegas' huge solar battery...

You need wind, hydro and geothermal as well. You put the wind turbines in the windy plains. You put the hydro where the water is. Geothermal...well the nice thing is that the earth is hot all over and it isn't going to cool down any time soon.

And you need innovators to keep making this stuff more and more efficient, flexible, and have better and better storage.

There are also other ways we can get energy, that people are working on. One example that I'm a little wary about is using viruses to produce energy. (anything that could mutate and become dangerous to humans is always something I'm going to be suspicious of though). Another way that sounds better is a guy that's collecting ambient heat in the air and converting it into electricity. But we should all be looking for even more ways to produce or collect energy. Science should be promoted in school. Kids should be encouraged to experiment with new possible forms of energy generation.

Then there are interesting side-projects too, like the guy who is getting cost-effective clean fresh water as a side-effect from running wind turbines. That's pretty important for a country like America whose major aquifer is drying up, don't you think?

Why isn't American education focused on creating these type of minds, that will create these types of inventions? Why is the public scared of any source of energy generation that did not exist in the 1950s? We've come so far since then!

There is only one reason that makes sense to me, and that is that the fuel-burning energy providers have a LOT of political might, and they have been keeping themselves on life support for decades now. Well, too bad for them, but their day is over.

We are not talking about putting energy production on every house. The idea is to build wind farms in the Northeast and solar farms in the Southwest which is much more economical. These would supplement existing coal and natural gas powered plants. Why limit ourselves to these two dwindling fossil fuels? As with all technology price drops as use expands.

Truth be told, as far as pollution from coal goes it does not really matter what the US does. China and certain other countries are burning more coal that most can even comprehend. And they do not give a monkey fuck at a rolling doughnut about pollution. Those factory cites need gigawatts to power all the machinery to make all that crap to keep Wallmart stocked up..It really is getting to be like some sort of dark comedy.

Solar power plants require natural gas. Check this out. A solar power plant cannot function without nat gas.

Remove mountain tops or stare at unending wind farms as far as the eye can see. Some choice. Drive thru Minnesota on I-90 and enjoy the scenery.
