If you don't give people anything or a means to earn a living then many will turn to crime and you will have a more violent unsafe society is that really a price worth paying. |

Problem with these were there was no way to tie what was bought to the person and they were sold at a rate of 2:1, this can still be done with the cards though. The best Idea is to force them to buy certain products only, Staples that must be prepared and actually cooked. or Like was said also food lines, they are only holding the couch to the floor waiting for the 1st of the month check, they can stand in a food line just the same if they want to eat. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13673925 That doesn't work for the homeless who have no place to cook sadly. If you want a nanny state so badly then have the stores quit selling junk foods to everyone. That stuff is poison. |

Food Stamps = Win Win ;-) Too bad we don't have Electricity, Cable, Phone and Internet stamps too. Last Edited by ***DRAGOON*** on 05/23/2012 08:51 AM |

When the welfare program in this country was first instituted back in the days of the new deal, if you or anyone in your household were receiving food stamps, or any government help, it's because someone in your household was performing work for the government. Weather it was building infrastructure or many of the other projects the new deal can claim credit for, those people worked for that "hand up" not a "hand out". Because they were working, albeit for the feds, those people still had their sense of pride. In today's world of endless handouts, nobody it would seem is required to get off their ass and do much, except for making more babies, (the next generation of democrat voters) it would seem that the sense of pride has been traded in for the wonderful mindset of entitlement. We could issue all the different forms of handout moneys we want, but how would any of these help or fix anything. We sincerely need to start putting all of the handout collectors to work, so that we could get back to providing a hand-up. Besides it's no secret that as a whole our infrastructure in the U.S. is crumbling, and we are cutting jobs in those categories across the board right now. Hell every time I go grocery shopping here in Oregon, it seems all I see are absolute able bodied young punk type males with their ghetto fab girlies with full buggies and purchasing with E.B.T.. Why are we not putting these dudes to work? On a lighter note:[youtube] [link to www.youtube.com] |

This idea is based on the assumption that fresh foods are somehow cheaper than the processed HFCS laced shit, but the opposite is true. 1 dollar buys approximately 250 calories of fresh fruit and vegetables, but it can buy 1100 calories of unhealthy, fat saturated, HFCS sweetened crap. Forcing people to buy fresh fruits, grains, and vegetables with their food subsidy accomplishes what??? Starvation perhaps??? |

Forcing them to eat healthy will ultimately save more than that dollar in medical costs! |

| A Mommy User ID: 5233107 05/23/2012 09:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I dont know how it is in other states but all I can buy with mine is food that can be cooked and prepared. I cant buy hot food or prepared food. Sometimes it would be nice to be able to stop and get a fresh roasted chicken on the way home so I dont have to cook when I get out late and dont have much time to cook before getting the kids to bed, but I understand the reasoning so its not an issue. I buy only healthy stuff since I dont give my kids sugar or junkfood. No canned spaghetti, etc. I buy the noodles, meat and sauces and make a huge pot and put whatever we dont eat that night into containers for me to reheat later instead. I dont buy the $1 sugar juices in the gallon jugs, I buy v8 splash and v8 frusion and all flavors of cranberry juice. My 7 yr old loses weight on his medicine so I spend alot on protein shakes, 1 each night, so I can try to combat the weight loss :( I honestly do need the help. My son has issues, and has weekly appts with the occupational therapist and behavior counselor, which means I cant work full time since I have no help. I dont get cash assistance or SSI, all I have is my $800 a month which barely covers rent and power. So without food money I couldnt feed my kids healthy. What I get doesnt even make it the month most times since the healthy stuff is sooo much more expensive then the junk. I could get 3 or 4 gallons of that sugar water juice at publix for the price of ONE v8.. And I could get 1 and a half gallons of regular milk for the price of ONE half gallon of almond milk. Its sad and I see how america has gotten so obese and unhealthy, its just cheaper to eat shitty than healthy |
