Macon is much further than an hour from the HQ CDC in Atlanta where they have the labs..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8720340

True...about an hour to an hour and a half, depending which way you go, how fast you drive, and where exactly you are going.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 454829

Its a SOLID hour and a half from downtown and the lab campus of the CDC is 8-10 miles north of downtown on Bufford HWY.

Its close to 100 miles from the CDC Lab campus to Macon.

I am a Biology Minor, and I can tell you this may be evidence that radiation levels in the general environment have increased due to fallout from Fuku in Japan.

The threshold for immediately killing organised life forms has not been reached, but it is known that (We even did an experiment mutating bacteria with low-level radiation) radiation has the effect of mutating dna chains, which in simple bacteria such as Salmonella can actually lead to adaptations that ultimately increase the rate of reproduction. Radiation increases the rate of mutation. In general, our experiments showed a doubling of the normal rate of reproduction due to mutations in bacteria.

If that is the case, we are so screwed---and most life on the planet, except for plants, bacteria, and bugs...

Speak in miles not hours. 7.8 miles in Atlanta is about 30 minutes though that area, and that would be fast.

Radiation can scramble genes, making complex organisms immune systems weak, and bacteria and protozoa potentially stronger. A two-pronged fork...

Yes, this story is 10 years old, but is interesting in light of what officials are not saying now about "necrotizing fasciitis" (flesh eating bacteria).

Maybe they don't know! It seems they have a hard time diagnosing the thing - as was reported in all 3 cases, so it's likely they are not educated or experienced in this area because of it's rarity - although they also say it is not rare - so which is it?

This article says that this disease can be transmitted!

Flesh-eating bacteria transmitted to nurse

Published: March. 28, 2002 at 9:22 PM
By ED SUSMAN - UPI Science News

ATLANTA, March 28 (UPI) -- Concerned health officials reported a "unique" case in which the so-called "flesh-eating bacteria" -- invasive Group A streptococcal disease -- apparently was transmitted from an ill patient to a nurse....

...Rarely identified as a disease which can be spread from one person to another, the case in a group home in Westchester County is moving state health officials to consider preventive antibiotic treatment for people exposed to the disfiguring and often fatal disease...

...Group A strep -- the cause of a far less serious and much more common illness, strep throat -- develops into an invasive, skin and muscle destroying disease known as necrotizing fasciitis for unknonwn reasons, perhaps as a result of a person's immune system acting inappropriately to the infection...

..."We were taken aback by this case," Stan Kondracki, an epidemiologist with the NYS Department of Health, Albany, said this week at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta...

..."We now believe that invasive Group A strep (Flesh eating bacteria) is a transmissible disease at very low levels and in unique circumstances," Kondracki said...

..."We are very concerned about the implications of this case. We think that the group home and long-term care facilities may be part of the equation and administrators of these facilities should be concerned if cases of invasive Group A strep occur..."

...He said he and his colleagues still are at a loss to explain why strep A, a ubiquitous infection, suddenly becomes invasive and deadly. "It is caused by a cascade of events that is not well understood," Kondracki said...

Could this infection be a mutation from Fuku? Could the flesh eating disease some how mutated to create a more lethal disease?

Macon may not be the issue if this guy picked up the bacteria from his restaurant in Atlanta (Lithonia) and brought it with him to Milledgeville.

There's no way to tell at this point if he brought it from Atlanta or it's in the Middle Georgia area waters, but...

this entire region should be on alert.

Also, it seems like that part of the country is already notorious for pollution from pig farms in the waterways, listeria, and strange fish kills. By all accounts I've heard the water is nasty in that area. I generally do my best to swim in clear flowing water.

These cases are breaking out everywhere.... It's not just flesh eating bacteria but even bacteria that was weak has been mutated into a super bug over the last couple of years.

Can We Handle a Flesh Eating Bacteria Outbreak?

Melissa Bynes Brooks

The recent news of flesh eating bacteria incidents has heightened the awareness of the general public regarding their susceptibility to being infected with this deadly disease. It’s a frightening prospect: the idea that a simple scratch or minor injury can trigger the onset of life threatening circumstances.

Is our public health care system prepared to handle a flesh eating bacteria epidemic or something similar if there was an outbreak? It’s an important question in this age of health care reform and debates over the future of our stresses public health system. Lost in the political back and forth is a real conversation on whether or not we’re prepared. But, general public nervousness about our system’s ability to really handle such outbreaks could result from public anxiety over political gridlock in Washington....

SO if you are out in the woods by the lake and you get a cut or scratch, would putting hydrogen peroxide or betadine solution on it rather quick help at all? Serious question as me and my family are going to be camping on the lake this weekend and my wife just laughs at me when I tell her about this. But I would rather be a little prepared than not at all. Also cancelling the camping trip is not really an option as the wife and kids will hate me even more than they do now.

Not even the local Macon and Middle Georgia media is hot on it yet...

 Quoting: Rev Mikey13

Flesh eating bacteria infections are extremely dangerous and can be deadly.
It spreads quickly (some say an inch per hour) and needs immediate treatment.

[link to www.webmd.com]

Important in understanding necrotizing fasciitis is the fact that whatever the infecting organism(s), once it reaches and grows in connective tissue, the spread of the infection can be so fast (investigators suggest some organisms can progress to involve about 3 centimeters of tissue per hour) that the infection becomes difficult to stop even with both antimicrobial drugs and surgery.

[link to www.medicinenet.com]

To help prevent any kind of infection, wash your hands often, and always keep cuts, scrapes, burns, sores, and bites clean.

In 1994 I was working at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego.
During Hell Week, Seal team recruits were made to swim in the contaminated bay, and we admitted 7 young men with necrotizing fasciitis in as many hours. The CDC was not notified, and all were reclassified as "cellulitis," despite the fact some of the young men lost limbs. Not sure how this ties in, but thought I'd throw it in there.

For this bacteria to be present - just waiting to get into cuts - it means it's already loose in the environment. It's not originating from one common source that all 4 people were in contact with at the same time in the same place.

The CDC left the barn door open. It will travel radially from this location. The only question now is, how fast?

MACON, Ga. - A grandfather is hospitalized in Macon after contracting a life-threatening flesh-eating condition.

Paul Bales, 67, retired to Milledgeville, but owns a restaurant in Lithonia.

Bales suffered a cut in his leg when he fell on May 2 as he cleaned up his boat ramp at his Milledgeville house...
