The fact that he entered colleges here as a foreign student should be a clue. It's not that easy to renounce US citizenship, and a child can't do it. Technically, they can. A person under the age of 18 must convince a US Diplomatic or Consular Officer that they fully understand the nature and consequences of the oath of renunciation...yada yada. Basically, they meet with someone from the Consulate to make sure they are not being forced or influenced to renounce their citizenship, but are doing it of their own free will.
