Re: BREAKING: Fire reported on nuclear submarine in Maine( update)
It's not black smoke. And the nuclear reactor is in the center of the ship and the artillery is in the forward of the ship. It'd have to spread quite a ways to do any damage. And that's IF it's armed. You're making a lot of assumptions.

It has an active nuclear reactor, and is on fire.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11145700

if it's in drydock the reactor is probably not active and any power to the ship is more than likely and external source. so this could be an electrical fire of some sort, hopefully they get it out quick with as little damage to the sub as possible

They rarely turn off nuclear reactors, even when in dry dock. They just run hoses and keep pumping water.

The white "smoke" isn't the smoke- it's steam from fighting the fire.. the smoke from the actual fire on TV is clearly black.

Re: BREAKING: Fire reported on nuclear submarine in Maine( update)
KITTERY, Maine — Multiple firefighters were reportedly injured while battling a fire aboard the USS Miami nuclear-powered attack submarine Wednesday evening at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, according to a shipyard official and emergency radio communications.

Firefighters were initially called to the Shipyard just before 6 p.m. for a report of a fire on a ship in dry dock. According to emergency scanner traffic, fire crews encountered heavy smoke and fire and two firefighters were taken from the scene with injuries. Two additional firefighters were later reported as requiring transport from the scene

This as well, honestly, what could be burning for hours in a metal sub other than something with the nuke's or the reactor

It doesn't carry nuclear missiles.

What's most likely burning is the insulation.

Quick, Arm the reactor!

It is electrical, with the source of the power... How often do fire fighters get injured w/ a simple electrical fire?

Dont forget, these compartments have Halon fire suppression systems, top end. They can put a fire out under the ocean but they need fire fighters for this one? Nah....

Fire normally burns quickly in an enclosed oxygen rich environment. This isn't a skyscraper, it's a submarine of which only a part is habitable with creature comforts. All of that ought to have burned away by now.

Unless it's armed, or the cooling system is damaged.

As I said earlier, they rarely shut down the reactors when in dry dock, they just continuously pump water through them from the ocean.
