Exactly the same thing's happening in the UK. Universities are saying entrants can barely read or write and can't spell. Businesses are saying they're unemployable.

Years ago we had grammar schools, where bright working class kids could get a good quality state education, but these were abolished in the name of equality, as it wasn't fair to the kids who were thick, or ethnic minorities, not to get as good an education as the bright ones. Result: the only ones who get a good education are the rich kids who go private. The majority receive a terrible education in classes where most of the kids don't speak English.

I had education in both the UK & Ireland, & have to say the Irish education was miles better by a long way, except for the 'religious' bit & punishments.. but actual education was far superior to the UK system. Irish kids & teachers were non judgemental, friendly & easy going without that nasty discipline, so sadly enforeced in UK schools.
I had a happy time in Ireland & learned a lot. Not 'once!' was I ever bullied or called names in Ireland, had lots of friends!

In the UK schools, I was suicidal on an almost daily basis, being visciously bullied by both other pupils & teachers alike. It was like some sort of boot-camp atmosphere there, where we were constantly lied to, beaten, put down & actually taught 'nothing' of any importance. I left Comprehesive to try boarding public school.. which was such a fucking nightmare.. I'm still having nightmares & flashbacks every day to this day after being fully traumatised & beaten. We have to Unite & Fight back!!!!!

Thanks for the video OP..

Why does it have to be about this thread being pinned? It is more what kinds of threads get pinned on here. Stupid threads, repeating the stupidity which had been pinned the day before until it was debunked in the thread so a new pinned version has to be made. That's an attempt by those with karma to dumb down GLP. That's just an example.

As for this thread, it is an overly-simplistic presentation. While it is true that kids are not trained in Greek, Latin, mathematics and subjects like them as they were in the past, kids are trained more in the sciences than ever before (just an example of where we know more than the past and are trained with more). In other words, some things are not taught as much, agreed, other things are taught more, agreed. It's not about "dumbing down" America, but about different needs different times.

Re: THE DELIBERATE 'DUMBING' DOWN OF AMERICA (VIDEO WITHIN)
I graduated from high school in 1979. I took 2 years of physics, chemistry, 3 years of computer programming, 3 years of electronics, calculus, and to many english classes(I hate english!).

After becoming disabled after repairing electronics for 27 years (I went straight into from high school) I went back to college for a degree in computer information systems. This was in 2008 and I was shocked by the lack of writing skills, lack of math skills, and in general lack of communication skills.

These were college student who couldn't write a simple paper for a class. We would have to critique papers and mine were rarely corrected but the stuff I had to read made me cringe. Same for math skills. Simple algebra was beyond many of the students and this was in statistics classes, pre-calculus etc.

I experienced the lack of communications skills first hand in online discussion groups. Student who couldn't write well enough to get simple ideas across to others. Complex topics were beyond them and I got frequent complaints that what I brought up was to advanced.

The US is headed for third world status. We lack skilled workers in way to many fields. We even lack skilled workers in blue collar technical fields like electronic repair. There are some public schools that are exceptions. In the small town I live in the school is a charter school and they focus on the basics. Students come from several counties around and my town has a population of 280.

I'm going out on a whim here to attempt to translate this. If I'm wrong, suck it!

The majority of kids today are no where near the superior educational level they were back in the early days (early 1900's). What we do have now is technology. What we had then was morals. We have people with brains TODAY, just like we did back then. The only difference is today we have people in technological positions that will tell you everything is fine and working according to plans. They get paid well for this and the mass population eats it right up! This is because there is no longer a barter system and people are making billions for their technological minds. Back then, the brilliant student showed up for school and didn't show his ass to his teacher or peers. He didn't dare! He kept his creative endeavors to himself. A kid doesn't have to be trained to speak several languages to be a genius or simply intelligent enough to make a difference. I true mind can't be dumbed down. It may seem sleepy but it never stops looking for the next challenge. If you truly think this gov't dumbed you down, you fell for it.

Same here. I'm English but live now in Ireland. Was with lawyers in London for many years, and saw the decline. Articled clerks with university degrees in English who couldn't spell; don't know how they got a degree. The older clerks were ten times more efficient, and even the older secretaries had to correct the new intake's work.

Evryone today can use apps on PCs and can handle basic technology; but how many know what makes them work? Not many in the West, only in countries like China. So what happens in the future? The West will be the new third world.

True.

I am only high school educated, but have a very high IQ. I am always doing something with my mind, and always asking questions. Dont stop asking questions. The more you ask, the more lies "they" have to come up with, and eventually, they will get caught out.

Kids dont ask, they just get angry and then violent.

I know many, many, many people that have no formal college education but can blow the hell out of my educated friends away in just about anything from common sense to book smart issues. Your "only HS educated" may really be a lot smarter than most that were college educated. Half the people I know that did walk the stage with there degrees don't even remember being in class or a lecture from a professor because they were too drunk.

Kids eventually ask. Lead by example and they'll cherish you forever :)

Thanks for my 1st good laugh of the day! :)

I'm a teacher and by the time they get to HS a lot of damage is done. I give them assignments which are intended to have them practice what we are learning and 90% of them are totally dumbfounded. The few who are with it sit there in disbelief and look very bored. Classes are overcrowded and students must be LED BY THE HAND to do absolutely everything.

I cannot simplify my curriculum any more because then I'd be teaching 4th grade content in HS. I should add that the majority of the students do not care if they fail, are extremely disrespectful to themselves and others, and feel very entitled to be entertained as opposed to educated. I blame the video games for that.

The future will be a scary time.
