I don't know, Apollo, that might not be such a bad idea! Not canes, of course, but I have to say that when I was in Catholic grammar school, those nuns wielded a wicked ruler! If we misbehaved in class they would smack us two or three times on the palms of our hands, not to mention the embarassment we'd experience having to stand up in front of the whole class while they did it! You know what? There were NO discipline problems, NO bullying, and NO disrespect for teachers or school rules such as is RAMPANT today! NONE of the parents objected; in fact, most (if not all) of them requested that they be informed if such discipline were necessary (and the reason why) and they we'd REALLY catch hell when we got home! The teachers and the parents were like a circle, they couldn't be played against each other like they are nowadays. The schools are so afraid any more of being sued that they condone bullying, disrespect, and downright delinquency from the students, the result being that the schools are more like a war zone than a place for learning.

Maybe we should bring all of our Troops home and re-deploy them as hall/classroom monitors! I'd bet that there would be a lot more learning going on and a lot fewer kids coming to school drunk or on drugs!
