Re: Near earth Asteroid 2012 KP24 0.1 LD!
Hey guys, on a related note, I found a NEO that has 0 as a miss distance minimum. It's 2008 CT1 which is the bus-sized asteroid that flew within 0.00089 AUs back in 2008. It has a condition code of 8 (orbit uncertainty estimate 0-9, with 0 being good, and 9 being highly uncertain) so it's not very certain it will hit.

Anyway, this 0 distance possibility could happen Feb 5th, 2069.

Very nice Astromut.

How do you put in the observational Monte Carlo numbers? Is this Starry Night software?

Is it possible to aid in the search for NEOs? Is there an online resource set up specifically for people who wish to contribute their time and scrutiny?

Well the major neo surveys all use automated search methods, but if you have the time and money, you can rent time on an online telescope from itelescope.net and hunt for them yourself. Takes a lot of time and money though. Once the 20" glp scope is online you can use that to do the search instead.

I just saw that. Thanks for reporting. That means the measurements are a bit more accurate than yesterday.

I prefer to think in Lunar Distance so I put it into the LD converter and came up with 0.149 LD. This is about 1/7 of the distance from the Earth to the moon.

TY fr the update Tbar. Noticed 2 resolve for position depending on whos data you're using. So obviously
one of them is wrong. What if they are both wrong?
And shouldn't the 2 data have slightly differnt close
approach times?

The HORIZONS data is for ONE specific date. The MPC data is for an epoch, there is a difference. That's why I went through the trouble of narrowing it down to ONE DAY. They are using the same observations.

JPL has updated the condition code from a 7 to a 6 which means they are getting more observations and are able to more accurately pinpoint a trajectory.

[link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov]

The minimum distance is now 0.00038155935 AUs which translates to 0.148 Lunar Distances (LDs) which is about 1/7th of the distance from Earth to the moon. The distance in miles is 35468 which is about 400 miles closer than the estimates from yesterday.
