100 million workers out of jobs

This statistic is CIVILIAN. Therefore it does not include 1 million military personel (2009) nor the 2.4 million incarcerated (2011). While these additional individuals do not impact the percentage significantly it is important to note.

Many of them do it because they are bored at home and their kids never come around. I'm afraid.

There have always been people that don't leave the work force. In all actuality seniors expenses are lower now than they used to be now that Social Security has a drug benefits plan.

You people on GLP really must be the losers of the bunch. Because there are jobs. There just aren't any jobs in construction, and there wont be for a very long fucking time. If you are waiting for construction jobs to come back instead of getting trained to be a nurse or x-ray tech then you aren't keeping up with the times and deserve a life of mediocracy.

With 80 million baby boomers about to retire there is going to be a host of jobs opening up to cater to them and their ailing health.

I think people are looking too much into this number. There are always going to be a certain percentage of working age population that doesn't work.

You have the losers that wont work.
You have high school students over 16, many of which don't work.

Full time college students without jobs.

Stay at home moms.

People that retire early. 60% of people retire before the age of 65. That's why you can retire at 62 if you're willing to have less benefits.

The historical norm is for 30% of working age population not working. And it makes sense.

That's just the way it is. There has never in the history of the US been more than 70% of working age people with a job. Meaning 30% without jobs is perfectly normal.

I think there has been an outmigration of 2 million immigrants as well as 5 million baby boomers leaving the work force each year.

The maximum they are allowed to stay is 6 years. Most of them leave after that point. So even though 100k are coming in probably 90k of them are leaving.

I believe what this number does demonstrate is how dramatic the increase has been. For example, it was "only" ~75 million back in 2000. Which is approximately a 34% increase in 12 years. Whereas the increase from 1990 until 2000 was only ~7-8%. That is fairly massive.

Also, look at how quickly the percentage goes up when you compare the: "Civilian Noninstitutional Population - With No Disability, 16 years and over (LNU00074593)"

Which states ~215million available to participate in the labor force (without a disability) as well as:

Civilian Noninstitutional Population - With a Disability, 16 years and over (LNU00074597)

Which states ~28million with a disability

215 + 28 = 243 million

100 million / 243 million = 41%

Sammy, Great input, I really appreciate your take on the matter, you sound like a thoughtful, compassionate, hard working person that has to deal with this dreadful downturn of economic events that is totally beyond our control.

I just got back in after doing volunteer work all day. I have no job at the moment but I like to keep busy and help out wherever and whenever I can.

I understand why you hold these convictions but may I suggest that you open your mind to the possibility that there are factors you have not yet been exposed to or considered that may make you rethink the firm conviction you now hold.

Chapter 17 has 4 sections 17a (part and 2) and 17b (part 1and 2). 17c (part 1 and 2).
That can be confusing so I wanted to point it out.

I will leave a lot of it out. I believe it is crucial but it can bring in some unnecessary hot debate topics (i.e. popular controversial topics of division) and I do not wish to derail into petty crap, because regardless of it's truth or fiction, it does not determine the fact or fiction of the many unprecedented problems we are facing.

I encourage watching it, if simply for an exercise in critical thinking, especially due to the questions it raises in the critical time factor of switching to alternatives which has been ticking away and the oil needed to build the means of producing the infrastructure and then bring it to market (unless free energy is released vey very soon).

Thanks Op.

We all have (humanity) great challenges ahead of us and the way in which we handle these challenges will reveal the people we really are.

I look forward to positive change, which I believe is necessary for the survival of our species and the millions of other species we share space with on this floating rock that is hurling through space.

But I do not relish in the reality that with change comes suffering for so many, due to a variety of factors but mostly due to the discomfort of change, fear of the unknown and more than anything the clinging to the past and things which can not be prevented.

May compassion for others and great strength guide us all.

We have to opportunity at these great junctures in time for either greatness beyond imagination or evilness beyond belief.

We always possess the capacity for choice and some choices hold more weight than others, much more.

May we have the strength and heart to choose wisely.
