If I remember correctly...when cable TV first started the big selling point was NO COMMERCIALS.

Paying for the cable SUBSCRIPTION was enough and they didn't have to show commercials..

What happened?

Have you seen the commercial for the Hopper? It is creepy. A kangaroo is bouncing on the bed (as if he's humping) while the man is watching TV. The animal is behind the man (to represent anall sex?)

The kangaroo breaks into the little girl's room and she starts to scream but the 'roo puts his finger up to his mouth as if to shush her. This is really sick.

TV Networks Say You're Breaking The Law When You Skip Commercials
Mitch Stoltz

Television networks are having a busy month trying to stamp out new TV-watching technology, including telling a court that skipping a commercial while watching a recorded show is illegal. Yesterday, Fox, NBC, and CBS all sued Dish Network over its digital video recorder with automatic commercial-skipping. The same networks, plus ABC, Univision, and PBS, are gearing up for a May 30 hearing in their cases against Aereo, a New York startup bringing local broadcast TV to the Internet.

EFF and Public Knowledge filed an amicus brief supporting Aereo this week.

The suits against Dish are a response to the "Hopper" DVR and its "Auto Hop" feature, which automatically skips over commercials. According to the networks' complaints, the Hopper automatically records eight days' worth of prime time programming on the four major networks that subscribers can play back on request. Beginning a few hours after the broadcast, viewers can choose to watch a program sans ads.

Netflix

After Netflix pulled that bait and switch marketing ploy, never went back. Been fine without them.

On demand service blocks your fast toward button on tv network on demand shows, forcing ad's upon viewers.

Tv sucks ! Infested with commercials, too many and far too long.

I just don't watch tv networks with ads anymore.

When cable came into the scene, it was to offer commercial free television, long before pay channels came into view.

They all got greedy !

If you go to the CBS website and choose a program to watch online, lets say you missed the last episode of How I Met Your Mother. You can watch it on the site commercial FREE.

There has to be more to this than just about watching commercials.

“Fox has not consented to the recording of its copyrighted programs by Dish, or to the distribution by Dish to its subscribers of copies of all of Fox’s prime time programming for subsequent on-demand, commercial-free viewing,” Fox wrote in its suit."

Well, since "live pause" is effectively recording, I would pull Fox from their programming until they consent to recording.

Re: WTF ?!? # TV NETWORKS SAY You're BREAKING The LAW When You SKIP COMMERCIALS #
I don't get it - if people want to watch commercials then they will - if they don't, then they won't.

Even many new computer games have tweaks that enable the user to skip the opening commercial clips such as the annoying nVidia logos.

Most people have to pay for satellite TV anyway - so if you pay for or have bought a product then you should be able to do whatever the heck you want with it.

Lastly, if I want to watch TV I don't want paid actor idiots with very poor scripts trying to sell me crap I will never want every add break - life insurance ads give me the shits so bad I want to shoot the TV:(
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 813193

The argument is that, by this DVR automatically removing commercials, the content that was broadcasted by the networks itself is changed, thus in violation of retransmission laws. It's as simple as that.

Do I hate the 5 minutes worth of commercials in between 3 minute acts of the show I'm trying to watch.. yes, I do.. it's extremely annoying and perhaps the main reason why I no longer watch TV. (there are two shows I watch though I don't watch them on TV)

A DVR that records and does not tamper with the transmission/content is no different than a VCR, besides the medium in which the DVR records (as well as supporting circuitry), VCR's were magnetic tape, DVR's are magnetic hard drive and so on.

This is how I'm understanding the complaint. Now, if this Hopper records the entire show and it's commercials and this "skip commercials" is a button that fast forwards through them, that's one thing -- nicer VCR's had this feature as unreliable as it was it was better than nothing. But, if it only records the show, then, that's a no no.

I don't care for the conglomerates anymore than most here.. but, I also don't watch the boob tube, except for college football, even then I follow only my alumni.

There is more to it; the networks want to decide when and how you watch their programming rather than giving YOU that choice. When you watch online, you are still subject to page ad's, etc. It's all about control and greed. Rupert Murdoch doesn't have enough money for his next back-woods ritual.
I only believe half of what I read and even half of that is bullshit.

LOL Dish Network dishes it out (suing for the same thing prior) and now gets the same done to them. It's kinda funny.

I can see where they could say a company making profit FROM a providers content and removing commercials as maybe theft but c'mon, blaming a device is silly. I wonder if some of these companies sued when the first VHS type of recording devices hit the market. They could do the same thing (albeit without automatically skipping).

They probably have to sue to try to recoup and recapture their commercial advertisers/$. With so many people switching from watching many mainstream programming to alternatives...

Exactly the same kind of bullshit is happening in the videogame industry and the book publishing world right now because these corporations are scared.

All this is, all it really amounts to is these companies have seen the writing on the wall... They know that their very existence is being threatened by new technology and new methods of delivering media.

It's inevitable that they will go down the drain unless they can put a leash on the current explosion.

So like the old dinosaurs in other industries they're trying to force the emerging new information paradigm to fit their old business models lol.

It's futile and they will be nothing more than a speedbump as the future marches inevitably on.

You can't fight the future.

I cancelled cable 8 years ago. BECAUSE OF THE COMMERCIALS.

Commercials are detrimental to good psyche health.

They make me (a Male) feel inadequate and lacking.

I watch all the shows with out commercials on the net.

Honestly, anything that allows commercials to disappear is good.

Re: WTF ?!? # TV NETWORKS SAY You're BREAKING The LAW When You SKIP COMMERCIALS #
I cancelled my cable 3-4 yrs ago because of cost and all the bullshit in between combined with information redundancy with the internet which I would rather have by 1000 fold.
Another guy I talked to said he was giving up tv because too much of his screen was being rented out by comercials.

I watch a little sometimes when I'm away from home or upstairs cooking. I was discussing with someone a youtube they saw of a tv program with the commercials and crap, opening title and all the pre and post recaps taken out and it was something around only 35 mins of actual program. thats 25 minutes of demand on your sanity. More than a third, more than luciferic fallen angel trap, and aproaching a satanic living hell on earth quota.

The other day I was wishing for a software program to pre record a tv show and take out all the commercials and other crap and record it to view later. maybe sell subscriptions under the table or sell edited downloads illegally. you could get it even on the day the show was aired if you need to be up to date for school or work the next day and don't want somebody ruining it by giving away the details.

We watch pre recorded hockey from real time broadcast, and you can skip almost everything except the actual game if you want to and it only takes a little over an hour instead of 2 1/2 hours which is close to 1 1/2 hours of nonsense and commentators flapping their lips.

i think the fair solution is that they should go fuck themselves for life and if people don't want their crap they can take it and shove it right up their asses

the comercials on the ionternet are taking over.
the internet worked just fine and was self supporting long brfore their were ads all over it.
tv used to be free and commercials were to pay for the broadcast and everything
the internet was never free but it was a virgin unpolluted experiment that got violated.

when its sufficently taken over and ruined
people will flee from it like tv and find something better to do with their time.

No problem, as have the entire show recorded, then a separate chip, having been sold to the consumer by a separate company, is inserted into the DVR wherein such chip's software offers i) an elimination of all the commercials, or ii.) addition of more commercials into the already recorded programming, either/or consumer's choice.
