Evangelical church shutting doors for Christmas - officials around the country consulted with each other before deciding to take the day off
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Central Kentuckyīs largest church will be shuttered and dark on Christmas Sunday, a move drawing some criticism among the faithful.

Southland Christian Church near Lexington is joinegroal evangelical megachurches across the country in canceling services for the holiday. Officials at the church, where about 7,000 people worship each week, said the move is designed to allow staff and volunteers to spend the holy holiday with their families.

The megachurches, which rank among the largest congregations in America, will hold multiple Christmas Eve services instead.

Among the churches closed on Christmas Sunday are Willow Creek Community Church, the Chicago areaīs largest congregation; Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, Mich.; North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Ga.; and Fellowship Church near Dallas.

Megachurch officials around the country consulted with each other before deciding to take the day off.

"Itīs more than being family friendly. Itīs being lifestyle-friendly for people who are just very, very busy," said Willow Creek spokeswoman Cally Parkinson.

The move is drawing mixed reviews. Critics say itīs the day of the week _ not the day of the year _ thatīs sacred. To them, closing the doors of the church on the Lordīs Day is unthinkable.

Others are troubled by the holidayīs increasingly secular tone and lament the change.

Robert K. Johnston, a professor of theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., worries that another Christian tradition is fading.

"Whatīs going on here is a redefinition of Christmas as a time of family celebration rather than as a time of the community faithful celebrating the birth of the savior," Johnston said. "There is a risk that we will lose one more of our Christian rituals, one thatīs at the heart of our faith."

The decision hasnīt generated much controversy at Southland, said church spokeswoman Cindy Willison.

"Weīve probably had maybe half a dozen (complaints), which is understandable," Willison said.

Some churches are scaling down their Sunday schedule on Christmas.

Louisvilleīs Southeast Christian Church, where 18,000 people worship each weekend, is scheduled to hold one service on Christmas in the fellowship hall.

Those huge churches are like large businesses which require a large staff to run. Thereīs no reason why families canīt observe their religious beliefs in their own homes rather than causing so many employees of the church to have to report for work on that day.

Actually, since Sunday is the Lordīs day, they shouldnīt be operating those large churches on that day either. Itīs not fair to the staff who are unable to have their day of rest every Sunday.

Are you sure? History tells us that Sunday had become the day of worship before Constantine took over the church for the roman empire (he was not a pope).

And what about the Ethiopian church? The Greek and Russian churches. They were doing it before the Roman church.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria is one of the autocephalous Eastern Orthodox Churches. Its head bishop is the Patriarch and Pope of Alexandria and All Africa, who claims to have succeeded the Apostle Mark the Evangelist in the office of Bishop of Alexandria, who founded the Church in the 1st century.

Note - The 1st Century is BEFORE the church of Rome existed.

If the church would stop celebrating pagan holidays and teaching pagan doctrines this would not even be an issue.

can you say gnosticism?
can you say paganism?

just because other parts of the world were quicker to yield to gnostic heresy does not mean the rome did not follow their lead

why was Ireland still worshipping on Saturday in the 4th century?

Re: Evangelical church shutting doors for Christmas - officials around the country consulted with each other before deciding to take the day off
Has it ever occurred to anyone here that the reason the early Jews chose Sunday as the Sabbath is because our Lord rose on the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK? Is not our Sabbath in Him?

The early Jewish Christians could not very well have attended services at their local synogogues now, could they! The choice of the Sabbath day separated the Christians from the Jews.

The Pharisees here that bash Sunday as being the Sabbath day of choice for many are totally without merit.

Col:2;16: Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Re: Evangelical church shutting doors for Christmas - officials around the country consulted with each other before deciding to take the day off
The Sabbath has nothing to do with the Resurrection and should never have anything to do with it.

The Sabbath is a memorial to Creation, and was created at Creation, not at Sinai when the Decalogue was handed down.

In Genesis 1 we are told that in 6 days God made the earth and all in it. And on the seventh day He rested, blessed and hallowed that day.

In the giving of the Decalogue, you will note that the commandment is not given to make that day Holy, but to "Remember" that holy day.

Why? "because in 6 days the Lord made heaven and earth and all that in them is, and He rested on the 7th day and hallowed (made holy) it."

Sabbath is not "the Lordīs Day" and no attempt should be made to make it such. It is the memorial to Creation, and the seal of the Authority of the Creator. Itīs states simply WHY He has the Authority. It is His by right of Creation.

As the Creator, He has a right to either redeem malfunctioning humanity or destroy it. He gets to state how it will happen, what the requirements are, and when they are met. He also gets to determine what the punishment is for failure to adhere to them.

Why, you ask?

One reason and one reason only. He is the Creator.

why were the irish christians forced to worship on sunday against their will?

obviously, they were descended from the 1st century christians and still worshipped on the sabbath, as early christians did in the temple

it was paganism which required sunday worship

no one can īchooseī a sabbath
the sabbath was made by God as the sixth day

the pope thinks he can īchooseī just about anything he wants, that doesnīt make it right

"The Sabbath has nothing to do with the Resurrection and should never have anything to do with it."

That may be true, Clio, but Saturday has no more hold on being the Sabbath day than does Sunday. Both days were designated by consent of church leaders.

My point in the above post was to opine that we have a choice as a community of believers to choose between the given days.

The named day of the Sabbath was not given at creation, so that my point is as well-taken as is yours.

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath, so why argue over oneīs preference over whether it is Saturday or Sunday, or any other day of the week?

it had nothing to do with church leaders

what īprotestantsī canīt seem to come to grips with is that they are still following catholic traditions of man

why donīt they read Foxesī book of martyrs and get an education?

God did not give the pope the right to īchooseī anything about the worship of God and Jesus

the Pope is a pagan position which was christianized by constantine

the vatican is also a pagan place of worship
