Is it right to put an animal out of its misery?
Just wondering, spiritually speaking...

There is a baby bunny we found in the back yard today with a broken neck. He cannot sit up straight and can only twirl around in fear when we come near. He cannot walk. He seems to be just laying there panting now. He is breathing very fast and his eyes seem to be rolling back into his head.

Should we put him out of his misery? He seems to be in a lot of pain.

If yes, how should we do it? We don't have any guns here

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT

as I said a few posts below, found out he has "head tilt", which is easily curable. so no killing necessary :)

been feeding him with a dropper, calmed down, and he is comfortable with the makeshift den we have constructed for him until I can get him to a vet after memorial day so he can be treated

and would I spend a little money for bunny antibiotics to save and enrich the life of a wild bunny? fuck yes I would.

I work in an animal shelter and have to humanely euthanize animals on a daily basis. It's never easy, but with humane drugs, we can do it without completely losing it as far as emotions go. I can't imagine having to do it by any other means, (I.E. hitting them in the head with rocks, like the above poster stated).

I'd call animal control and let them deal with it.

Re: Is it right to put an animal out of its misery?
Honestly though, I can say after being in the animal industry for as long as I have, it sounds like your bunny is dying. The eye rolling is a sure-fire sign of either seizing or another neurological problem going on as a result of the damage to it's neck/spinal cord. It was likely attacked and somehow escaped. Please try to get it to an SPCA or humane society shelter as soon as possible. They will be able to put it to sleep very quickly and painless.

End even though a rock to its' head would be equally quick, somehow we have been guilted by people into thinking that it is only "humane" if you pay a vet to do it with chemicals.

Just smack it with the rock and bury it. But don't tell any liberals or you will probably be charged with a crime.

Depends where you are. If you can get it to a vet/animal rescue place, then try that. It may not be a broken neck.
If you are certain, and there is no local help, then it's a decision you'll have to make for yourself. I personally couldn't do it - I just can't kill anything with intent, not even insects.

I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that it would probably be easier for OP to let a shelter handle it than try to muster up the strength to hit a defenseless animal on the head if they have any reservations about stuff like that.

Not to mention, animal shelters cannot charge public for surrendering injured strays. Nor can they charge the finders of said animals for the lethal injections. It's a cost they absorb or pay for with donations if they choose to accept the stray into their care.

Animal shelter is closed... emergency pet veterinarians won't take in wildlife. Wildlife rehabilitation center won't answer their phone.

So I guess we are going to have to do it ourselves.

Really hope there's a good way to do it clean, quick, painless..... shit

This type of situation is one of the few things that I can't resolve in my mind. Another is organ donation - I know it's the "right" thing to do, but still I pause to sign up.

If you feel that is the best option and are emotionally able to handle it, then good luck. I applaud you for caring enough to want to end it's suffering.

this would firstly require that animals can experience misery..

are animals capable of this?

A quick (and reasonably painless way) is to grab its back legs, and swing it with force against a wall, or even car tyre.

Its never nice, but sometimes you have to do this shit.

Poor thing. Send him home.

A sharp knife across its throat should do the trick. But to be humane about it, at least stay there with it as it dies.

Perhaps, depending on how old it is, he is too young to use its muscles?

The problem is we "people" transpose our emotions into this realm. Do you think the coyote enjoys the kill of the bunny? Or is he just satisfying his hunger? Do you think the bunny feels sorry for himself as hes being chomped by the coyote? Probably not. He might feel pain for a couple seconds, but hes not thinking how unfortunate his circumstances are and that he will never say goodbye to his 7 female partners and 95 children. There is a certain pattern to life that we humans fail to understand about the animal world. The cycle of life is the cycle of creation. The best thing to do is to stop the suffering! Do the right thing and don't prolong the pain!

Letting an animal suffer like that is inhuman. You should have put it out of its misery right when you noticed its neck was broken. No reason to let an animal suffer like this. And if you don't know how to do it take the bunny to a vet

Re: Is it right to put an animal out of its misery?
I'M THE GRIM REAPER IN MY CIRCLE OF FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.meaning i'm called upon in these kinda things be it a poor dog cat ,bird or bunny .humanely killing an animal to relieve suffering is the goal.i do not enjoy it .some one needs to be strong.i like how some compassion less people so easily say hit it with a rock?chop its head off ?you can of course being a small bunny a whack in the head say a stick broom handle size to the neck or a bucket of water will stop the suffering trying to save a wild bunny can be done but it's not natural let these things be .more life in death than death in life?
