It's a day to sit back and reflect on the men and woman who were brave enough to fight for our freedom . My father was in WWll and was at the landing of Normandy ( Saving Private Ryan). Oh yea he came back with just a scar of his face but he must have had a mental problem , they didn't know about Post-traumatic stress disorder back then. He became an abusive alcoholic. We three children and my mom paid for that dearly. Beating's, calling us names, would spend his money on booze and no food for us most of the time. It not only affects the people who served but the families they came home to. I buried him with full military honors. My sister and brother didn't want any part of his funeral. I cried like a baby when they handed me the flag after the soldiers folded it and gave it to me. I have since given it to my granddaughter. I am seventy years old and have never gotten over my childhood. I just can't.

Whereas to this end the Congress, in a joint resolution approved May 11, 1950 (64 Stat. 158), requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace:

Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States, do hereby urge the people of the United States to observe Tuesday, May 30, 1961, Memorial Day, by invoking the blessing of God on those who have died in defense of our country, and by praying for a new world of law where peace and justice shall prevail and a life of opportunity shall be assured for all; and I designate the hour beginning in each locality at eleven o'clock in the morning of that day as the time to unite in such prayer.

To my Grandpa Collins who served in the Army during the Korean War. I thank you for your service and for all of the wonderful things you taught me to respect and honor about the country I live in. I miss you.

To my Grandpa Parker who served in the Navy during World War II. I thank you for your service which continued until your passing long after the war had ended. On behalf of all of those service men and their families, I thank you for all of the time and effort you did voluntarily to ensure that they received the VA benefits they needed. Thank you for helping them untangle all of the red tape and bureaucracy so they could concentrate on getting well.

To my Father who served as a Marine during Peace Time. I thank you for your service and know that if war had come during that time you would have, without a second thought, gone to the front lines to fulfill your oath to this country. I also thank you for all of the wonderful stories and all of the precious things about this great Nation you instilled in me as a child. It made me a better person and a responsible defender of the Republic. I love you, Daddy.

To my Uncle Pat who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. I thank you for your service and regret so deeply how badly you were treated when you got back home. A Nation who should have welcomed you with open arms shunned you instead. They did not embrace you and let you tell them of the horrors you witnessed nor the long years after spent in one too many bottles of alcohol nor the terrible nightmares you endured because of that war. I love you and I will always respect your service to this great country no matter what other people think.

To my brother Scott who served in the Army during peace time. I thank you for your service and for the Man you became during that time. You were so lost but you were able to find yourself with the help of your fellow brothers in arms. You are my best friend and I love you.

To my nephew Christopher who served in the Army during the still ongoing war in Iraq. Thank you for your service during this horrible war. You completed two tours and saw things that I hoped you would never see. I grieve with you over the loss of your friends who paid the ultimate sacrifice there. But even though they lost their lives, never forget the good things that you did to help the people of Iraq. You helped to build schools in places that never had one and bring fresh, running water into homes that had never seen such a thing. You showed so many the good things that America stands for and I love you for this. I'm so glad you came home. Relieved you came home.

Edit to add: My nephew Christopher was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas and was there the day that mad man shot and killed all of those people.

The friends he lost in Iraq were lost to and IED hidden along the road that led to the site they were building a new school on. He was not on that truck that day.

On CNN this morning were lists of the fallen in the latest wars. I don't think the dead from my tour would agree that they died to "give y'all the opportunity to complain".

Kind of amazed at the lack of positive responses on this thread.

I do realize that wars are never fought for what we are told is the reason, but none-the-less, the men and women who serve do so to preserve our way of life. War is stupid and pointless. I'm sure we all agree on this. However, at this point in Human existence war is still something we have not overcome and until such a time as we have I will continue to honor those who fight and die for what they believe in. Here in America, the cause is for individual liberty and to safeguard a Constitution which was created to protect this Divinely given right.

Most of my family is military btw, so we have a deep respect for all who serve. I currently have family stationed in Japan and soon Georgia.
