he's the secular representative with ties to the old regime who will run against the muslim brotherhood candidate in the next round

peaceful protests earlier were upset that the liberal democratic protestors' candidate amr moussa only got 10% of the vote, claiming it was rigged

the rest of the vote was split about 30% to the old regime shaqif, 30% to muslim brotherhood's mursi, and 10% to the extremist islamist party

so...whodunnit?

See that's exactly the kind of shit I expect from someone who's not here and doesn't have any understanding what's going on. The one's protesting are not the MB, they're quite comfy with having come in #1 in the 1st round. The one's protesting are the Revolutionaries, Sabbahi supporters and group against the "Feloul" - old Regime remnants.

You don't understand the last days lots of stuff came out about vote fraud in favor of Shafiq and Sabbahi (leftist, Nasserist) came in close 3rd. They don't want Shafiq at all costs.

Morsi is in contact with all groups and egyptians and has made several concession, like making a unity government that includes all egyptians and copts, making 2 deputies and a VP not from MB etc....We will see what happens the next days.

This kind of attack on Shafiq was expected.

To add, why the protest and anger tonight, because the Elections Committe threw out all complaints filed against elections fraud and declared Shafiq final runner up against Mors....instead of Sabbahi. It was VERY close...so, hope that helps.

Re: BRKG: TSIHTF in Cairo right now
Many protesters were angry against the possible return of Mubarak's last prime minister to power, and also what they believed to be vote-rigging against Nasserist candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi who finished in third place in the poll.

"Smash Shafiq on his head," the marchers chanted.

"Down with the military rule."

"The election was rigged by SPEC to preserve the old regime," Khaled Ali told Al Jazeera Mubasher TV.

"I am calling for an independent judicial commission to review all ballots in order to confirm that the vote was rigged for Shafiq," Ali added.

In the afternoon, outside SCC and SPEC headquarters, protestors had demanded the enforcement of a 'disenfranchisement law' banning former regime figures like Shafiq from returning to political life.

Application of the law – which has been endorsed by parliament and the ruling military council but which still awaits approval by the SCC – would exclude Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, from the presidential race. Liberal groups, for their part, are lobbying for Nasserist presidential contender Sabbahi to replace Shafiq in the upcoming runoffs.

Demonstrators called on Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Mursi to ally with other presidential contenders – such Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh and Hamdeen Sabbahi – to unite against 'remnants' of the Mubarak regime, in a reference to Shafiq.

Groups that endorsed Monday's demonstration outside the SCC and SPEC headquarters included the Revolutionary Youth Coalition, the Kefaya protest movement, the April 6 youth movement and the Revolutionary Socialists.

The SPEC announced at a Monday press conference that the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi and Mubarak-era minister Shafiq would face each other in next month's runoff poll.

According to the constitutional declaration, issued by the ruling military council in the wake of last year's uprising and approved via popular referendum, decisions made by the SPEC cannot be appealed.

Meanwhile, thousands also marched in Alexandria on Monday afternoon to protest the elections results.

Reports have also come in on Monday evening from a number of governorates in the Delta region which indicated that anti-Mubarak protesters have set fire to campaign banners for the former PM Ahmed Shafiq.

You have to pay lots of attention to the news the last 3 days and read to understand what's going on. We are in a real dilemma and I think it was done on purpose. We have 2 candidates that none of the majority wants, smart played by SCAF and old Regime. Vote turnout was only 46% and neither Morsy nor Shafiq reached a majority, it was 25% to 23% circa with Sabbahi coming in with almost 22%. Something was fishy though...

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16200664

Ohh...seems you misunderstood what happened. Allow me to explain. Ok, first I was not in Tahrir, too old for this stuff.
The Revolutionaries were in Tahrir, along with Sabbahi supporters and some other of Khalid Ali etc. VERY peaceful, nothing was going on, just chants.

Then in Dokki (different part of Cairo), some "unknown" assailants (I'm quoting our media here), ransacked and torched Shafiq's Elections HQ. Nobody injured, fire is put out.

After that, "unknown" assailants attack the peaceful protesters in Tahrir with sticks and stones.

It's the same tactic...all expected. All is peaceful now though.

You see, the stats are difficult now, because they succeeded in dividing us into many different groups. So instead of ALL backing Sabbahi, or Moussa, votes were split between those 2 and Fotouh and a few others. Neither Morsy nor Shafiq got a clear majority...we all thought it would come down to Moussa and Fotouh...boy did they fool us.
Just a few more votes, we would have gotten someone else next to Morsy. The other best organized group are of course over 3 Mio. of the old Regime supporters. Who are those? Lots of different people, from families of some of the Elites in prison, Miltiary Complex, Companies, friends of Mubarak's, former NDP Members and their business associates....you name it. There were rumors of vote buying too...it's easy in a poor country.

Anyways, it's over, we have to make a decision now to either vote for Morsy or not vote....lool....at least how it's for some of us. If you vote Shafiq, we go back to Mubarak's era unfortunately. That's why so many people are pissed. And if MB wins, they better watch out not to piss off the Revolutionaries, Secularists and Christians too...but Morsy is already making lots of concession. Wish us luck.

So basically we are stuck with 2 candidates that neither reached more than 26% of the votes, there's no majority who wants either.

Oh and good luck to you guys too....how do you like your new unity government? You guys have protests last week too.

True! There is lots of developments and he is making many concessions...I'm no fan of him nor Ikhwan, but...looking over to Shafiq, I have to look at him and weigh the options.

In an effort to build consensus and woo a broader base of support as he heads into the final leg of presidential elections, Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsy has agreed to form a presidential council and a coalition government, according to campaign spokesman Yasser Ali.

Official voting results for the first round of elections held last week have put Morsy on top with more than 5.7 million votes, followed by Ahmed Shafiq with more than 5.5 million votes, qualifying both for the runoff scheduled for 16 and 17 June. Nearly 23 million valid ballots were cast, according to official results announced by the Presidential Elections Commission Monday.

Talk about concessions from the Brotherhood has intensified since the results of the first round put him in a tight race with Shafiq. Many revolution groups said that backing Morsy in the upcoming runoffs would depend on concessions from Morsy and his Freedom and Justice Party, which also dominates Parliament.

Following a meeting with coalitions and revolutionary youth movements Monday, Morsy has demonstrated his readiness to build consensus to protect the revolution, according to Ali. He has agreed to some demands, including to appoint deputies and advisors and devise a constitution that represents all Egyptians.
