Um, why is believeinmermaids.com seized by DHS??? | |
Anonymous Coward 05/30/2012 04:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This video has made a big splash. I see anywhere from 100 to 400 watching it on at least one website that has it, on an everyday basis. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1520917 I also see it's been taken off of YouTube; at least I can't find it on there anymore. Maybe it was reported and DHS did shut them down at the producer's request? I don't know enough about the sign they've put up on that Mermaid website, to know if it's fake or not. . It's fake. The site was never seized look at the page's source code. Bodog ( [link to www.bodog.com] ) was seized due to online gambling so we will use it as an example. Bodog: <html> <head> <title>This domain name has been seized by ICE - Homeland Security Investigations</title> </head> <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <div align="center"><img src="IPRC_Seized_2011_05_Baltimore.gif" width="1024" height="768" border="0"></div> </body> </html> believeinmermaids.com <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" " [link to www.w3.org] <html xmlns=" [link to www.w3.org] xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <!-- believeinmermaids.com --> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="media/css/reset.css" media="screen" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="media/css/screen.css" media="screen" /> <script src=" [link to ajax.googleapis.com] type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> (function ($) { // VERTICALLY ALIGN FUNCTION $.fn.vAlign = function() { return this.each(function(i){ var ah = $(this).height(); var ph = $(window).height(); var mh = Math.ceil((ph-ah) / 2); $(this).css('margin-top', mh); }); }; })(jQuery); </script> <script type="text/javascript"> var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-2145848-8']); _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'none']); _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? Here is the actual link that's hidden to the people going to that Mermaid page: [link to www.believeinmermaids.com] /media/img/mermaids_web.jpg See the "media" part of the URL? At least, that's what I'm guessing. I hope anyway. . |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1061589 United States 05/30/2012 04:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay, so we have Zombies, mermaids and what else? It seems like the most unlikely sources, and most joked about sources of doom, happen to be the scenarios that are actually coming to fruition, right now. For all of those who have mastered "The Secret" and manifestation, please draw us up a little bit different game plan. Most of this new stuff doesn't sound like too much fun at all. Shit!. it's all about love... why do I keep forgetting that?!?! |

The website is part of the ad. Most movie makers do that, now. Like when The Dark Knight, and Blair Witch came out. Quoting: It' an Ad Campaign 13176070 it's against the law to use the DHS seal if you're not the DHS I doubt discovery (the discovery channel) would do that I thought that was true for TSA? I never saw anything about DHS... |

Possible but who knows now a days.. one thing for sure it will drive people to watch the show…which the wifey and I watch…meh it was ok The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help. |
CleverMoniker User ID: 15254278 Canada 06/01/2012 10:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is fake, you are being hoaxed. 1. I can guarantee you the DHS does not name their 'Seized' jpeg something like: [link to www.believeinmermaids.com] 2. The real DHS would not bother to follow the webmasters previously established directory/organizational structure, they would just drop the image file in the root dir. 3. When the DHS seizes a domain, they simply drop their OWN standard html index file in the root. It's a non-specific file that gets put on any seized domain. This stupid mermaids site does NOT have this standard file, but rather their pre-existing page has simply been edited. DHS would not go to all this work, they would just replace the old index file with their own template. Fake, fake, fake. C'mon people, it's fucking mermaids. I know this is a conspiracy site, but this is like suspecting the government is covering up the existence of leprechauns. If they are 'covering up' stuff about mermaids, it's most likely just to test how easily, and the extent to which they can get people believing in something absurd. |

I never saw anything about DHS... I would assume that IMPERSONATING a government official by using official seals of ANY government department without proper authorization would be criminal and is likely to be a FELONY / Indictable offence. DISCOVERY Channel's legal department would be completely aware of the laws regarding impersonation and would 100% never allow it. A government department would certainly have the Justice Dept prosecute any offenders using their seal within the timeframe allotted by the statute of limitations. Is it fake by that criteria? Certainly not. Web source code means absolutely nothing as to whether or not a seizure is "real" or is a case of impersonation. DHS and ICE would likely have several variations of their notice which would function differently according to their needs for each environment that they encounter. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1673157 Canada 06/01/2012 10:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The seizure could be a result of copyright infringement by DISCOVERY. Perhaps they used footage or images from DISNEY's Little Mermaid animated feature without proper authorization and Disney complained? Such an instance might result in site seizure by DHS and ICE. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1673157 Canada 06/01/2012 10:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Still a felony for impersonating and DISCOVERY's responsibility to immediately remove the "hacked" page/site from public view. So if this was the first day this page was up, sure... Hackers is always a possibility. 2nd day, NO! Not hackers as DISCOVERY would be liable for not removing the offending page within a resonable timeframe, such as 24 hours max. |
