Don’t let the name fool you; described by manufacturers as bath salts or plant food in order to skirt drug legislation, these designer drugs are actually a particularly nasty brand of hallucinogens, a category of drug which includes LSD (acid) and magic mushrooms....

These aren’t your grandmother’s bath salts. The most recent–and extremely dangerous–drug trend has poison control centers and government officials on edge. Special chemicals labeled as “bath salts” and parading under such fantastical brand names as “Ivory Snow” and “Vanilla Sky” are known to cause hallucinations, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts. What’s even more concerning is that they can be bought by any 18-year-old at their local convenience store....

....The head of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, Armando Aguilar, said cases related to the type of drugs known as “bath salts” are not new locally.

“We have seen, already, three or four cases that are exactly like this where some people have admitted taking LSD and it’s no different than cocaine psychosis,” Aguilar said.

In the cases Aguilar mentioned, he said the people have all taken their clothing off, been extremely violent with what seemed to be super-human strength, even using their jaws as weapons.

Emergency room doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital said they too have seen a major increase in cases linked to the street drug called “bath salts” or what Aguilar described as “the new LSD.”

“We noticed an increase probably after Ultra Fest,” said emergency room Dr. Paul Adams, at Jackson Memorial Hospital....

"Bath Salts", the newest fad to hit the shelves (virtual and real), is the latest addition to a growing list of items that young people can obtain to get high. The synthetic powder is sold legally online and in drug paraphernalia stores under a variety of names, such as "Ivory Wave," "Purple Wave," "Red Dove," "Blue Silk," "Zoom," "Bloom," "Cloud Nine," "Ocean Snow," "Lunar Wave," "Vanilla Sky," "White Lightning," "Scarface," and "Hurricane Charlie."....
