LIGHT PILLARS APPEAR ACROSS THE TWIN CITIES *PIC*

(WCCO) Lights that appeared in the sky Saturday evening were light pillars, WCCO-TV meteorologist Mike Fairbourne said.

Residents across the Twin Cities reported seeing the pillars in all directions throughout the evening.

Light pillars are formed when ice crystals in the sky refract the light from ground light sources. When enough of the crystals align, pillars of light appear in the sky.

According to NASA, the flat, fluttering crystals may form near the ground as a form of light snow. They are sometimes called an ice fog.
