8-Year-Old Gets 'Catastrophe Award' for Most Homework Excuses
The mother of an 8-year-old Arizona girl who was presented with a "Catastrophe Award" for apparently having the most excuses for not having homework believes her child was humiliated by her teacher.

Christina Valdez said her daughter, Cassandra Garcia, came home one day from class at Desert Springs Academy in Tucson, Ariz., with the paper award.

The document, which looks like a colorful card, contained the following message: "You're Tops! Catastrophe Award. Awarded to Cassandra Garcia. For Most Excuses for Not Having Homework."

The teacher signed the card "Ms. Plowman," added the date - May 18, 2012 - and even included a smiley face.

(In accordance with GLP 50% rule.)

Again lack of accountabilty or willingness to be responsible for your own kids. "adding that she was not aware her daughter had a problem with homework"

I heard the mom say the teacher was a bully.....how stupid is that.

People are so overly sensative these days. It was just a joke. Just keeping the mood light. I am sure being a teacher and being around snotty little kids all day, sometimes you gotta do something funny, to stay loose.
Truth is the new hate speech in this age of absurdity.

She is only 8, ridiculous, like it's homework for college, the teacher should have made her do her homework during recess. The teachers never have time to contact parents. I'm so sick of hearing it's the parents fault, I guarantee if it was a private school, parents would not have to deal with this crap and that's a fact.

Parents work! The school gets paid to teach these kids and make sure they are doi g what they are supposed to be doing, if no homework then they get punished at school. Always blame the parents, it's easier.

Ummm...excuse me, if it were a private school, they would have called the mom on the phone after the second time homework was not done to find out

a. If the mom was sick and needed some assistance

b. If the mom was somehow unaware of the process of checking the child's homework folder for assignments

and then they'd offer the appropriate assistance or training to mitigate the issue.

The point is that the kid is not going to LEARN as fast as the rest of the class if the little darling is not doing her homework.

Out of all things this Mom has to complain about , she complains about this !

I think many deserve WW3. They are in for a rude awakening on what distress really is.

Do you HAVE children?

If so, you don't take a personal interest in your child's education?

"the school GETS PAID...to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing"

Guess what? It's a PARENT's responsibility to make sure children do what they are supposed to do.

I would not like to have my parental responsibilities or RIGHTS taken over by any state institution.

People need to man up.

They alreadtpy took the parents rights away that's why kids are out if control, the school blames parents fir everything, so therefore the kids don't take responsibility, they look to the parents too, to blame, it's a vicious circle of the blame game.

Doesn't matter what school your kid goes to. You should still be checking to see how your child is doing. Sending them to a private school isn't an excuse to be excused from your childs life. Sounds like lazy parenting to me.
