A land invasion would have cost ten times the number of lives. So, no, I do not feel guilty that so many lives were saved by the use of this weaponry.

Re: Do any Americans feel guilty that they approved of the Nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Most of you people seem pretty ignorant of the facts.

100,000 Japanese civilians were killed by the U.S. fire bombing of Tokyo, far more people than were ever killed by a nuclear bomb.

So why aren't you concerned about the fire-bombing? Would you prefer that far more Japanese were killed by incendiaries rather than atomic bombs?

It was estimated that a conventional military attack on Japan would have killed 1 million American soldiers and several millions of Japanese. They refused to surrender and vowed to fight to the last man.

The dropping of the two atomic bombs on Japan hastened the end of the war and saved millions and millions of lives.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12213709

You are right x1000 They{we} would have fire bombed even more and had plans for it as had already been done on a limited scale. It would have been like Dresden on a scale that is unimaginable an actual hell on earth for sure.

Re: Do any Americans feel guilty that they approved of the Nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
I don't feel any guilt, firstly I didn't make the choice and secondly they attacked us, hid their bases in civilian cities, AND allied with a man who killed 10x as many jewish people ALONE then our nukes did in both incidents combined.
The first nuke is on us...the second nuke is on them. We gave them the option to surrender with fair conditions and they chose not too.

So, I don't feel guilty at all. They would have lost 10x as many men on both sides if they did a land invasion.

Just like all the blacks in the US crying over slavery still...get over it please. Every race has been a slave at some point, the difference is we cry less over it.

happyheart

The nuclear bomb, saved the day, with Hitler,s Fascist Regime, and Japans, Rule by the Sword, Regime, our balls would have been hanging, from the fences, that would have kept us from straying from our accomadation as slaves. The women would have been used for much dire, and sinister, events.
AMERICA, we love you.! History, is now providing information, that the timing of The 'DROP'to have been perfect . Like all else, even today, America with 'her allies, will remove Terrorist Regimes,as they are a Major Threat at home.At times though it must be tempting 'NOT' to use Nuclear Weapons, as a clean up tool. Remember what BUSH said you are either with us or against us. So to all others get your shit together,America will keep the Status Quo, regardless, of the cost.To keep the system running perfectly.red_heartheartsblwkssluvstrukkissluvhappyhearthappyheartluvyared_heartred_heartred_heartred_heartred_heartred_heartred_heart

Bohemian Grove

The Grove is particularly famous for a Manhattan Project planning meeting that took place there in September 1942, which subsequently led to the atomic bomb.

document 17 A former ambassador to Japan, Grew’s knowledge of Japanese politics and culture informed his critical stance toward the concept of unconditional surrender. He believed it essential that the United States declare its intention to preserve the institution of the emperor. As he argued in this memorandum to President Truman, “failure on our part to clarify our intentions” on the status of the emperor “will insure prolongation of the war and cost a large number of human lives.” Documents like this have played a role in arguments developed by Alperovitz that Truman and his advisers had alternatives to using the bomb such as modifying unconditional surrender and that anti-Soviet considerations weighed most heavily in their thinking. By contrast, Herbert P. Bix has argued that the Japanese leadership would “probably not” have “surrendered if the Truman administration had clarified the status of the emperor” when it demanded unconditional surrender.

I don't have a problem with Hiroshima, but I have misgivings about Nagasaki. I think the US administration should have given Japan a chance to realize how devastating Hiroshima was and to surrender, but instead they bombed Nagasaki just three days later.

No shit, MY dad was a toddler when WWI ended. My mom's side was in Eastern Europe and suffered endless abuses and torment. So no, anything to stop lunatics from oppressing others, it's a good thing.

The people of japan were fodder anyway,t heir own leader sent them to their deaths, some as young as 13 as kamikazes. The Emperor was an idiot.

When will people get it? You teach people how to treat you. Something muslims and other bullies don't get. It looks pretty fucking disingenuous when you use women and kids as tenth rate citizens, and as human shields, then breast beat at their funeral. Bullshit. Do beat me to killing them, it's not garnering any sympathy. Actually WWII brought Asia out of the stone age.

World War 2 Vet, OP? If you are, you know dang well that you knew nothing about the bombings until they'd happened. You also didn't know of the existence of the atomic bomb until it happened.

If you're of a mind to read history books, you'll also know that the firebombing of Dresden killed about four times more people--you feeling guilty about that, too?

I don't feel guilty about any of this stuff, as I wasn't born when it occurred and had no hand in any of it.

What I do feel bad about is how we seem to have to have a damned war every 18 years to keep the rich rich and kill off a percentage of the grown-children when they come of age. I don't feel guilty for this, but I sure feel bad about it. It's a barbaric way to run a planet.

they had the chance to surrender after the first nuke, they still did not capitulate. so at the very least, the second one is all on them. (the politicians i mean)

as far as 'approval', the average american citizen joe sixpack not only did not have an opportunity to approve or disapprove (like that would happen) those weapons were extremely top secret. if you want someone to blame, blame Hirohito.

Re: Do any Americans feel guilty that they approved of the Nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
We had a guy in the town I grew up in as a kid who'd flown in the scout plane that went ahead of the Enola Gay on the first bombing run.

He lost his mind due to the immensity of what he'd seen. He literally staggered and lurched around town like a zombie in a b-movie. Harmless, but out of his mind for the rest of his life.

I feel sad for him.

Also feel sad for my uncle Robert who lost his mind on D-Day. Feel sad for my mom's first fiance, who got both arms and both legs blown off by a landmine in Nurmburg, at the war's end. Feel sorry for the dad of one of my pals, who's arms are all scarred from the heat of a .30 cal. machine gun he ripped off it's stand to charge downhill at an endless wave of japanese troops. he broke their charge, got a medal, but was never the same. used to do nothing but be quiet and putter in his garden. Feel sorry for my dad, an aviator who even when I was a kid in the '50's would periodically wake up screaming at night, something about the plane being on fire. Great stuff.

War's a huge frikken abomination. No guilt, unless you've done something to be guilty about.
