For once, Kudos to the FDA: FDA rejects new name for High Fructose Corn Syrup!
NEW YORK (AP) — High fructose corn syrup won't get a wholesome new name after all.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday rejected the Corn Refiners Association's bid to rename its sweetening agent "corn sugar."

Given the sweetener's bad reputation in recent years, the association submitted an application to the agency in 2010 to have the product renamed on nutrition labels.

But the FDA said that it defines sugar as a solid, dried and crystallized food — not a syrup.

Separately, the Corn Refiners Association has also been running a marketing campaign to explain that its syrup is actually a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as the familiar white, granular table sugar that consumers are familiar with.

That in turn prompted a lawsuit from the Sugar Association last year claiming that the campaign is misleading.

Dan Callister, a lawyer for the Sugar Association, said the FDA's decision confirms his group's position that sugar and high fructose corn syrup are two distinct products.

"What's going on here is basically a con game to suggest otherwise," Callister said. "What do con men do? They normally try to change their name. The FDA has thankfully stopped that."

I'm betting Monsanto has the 'next big thing' ready to replace HFCS and are willing to let it die a horrible, public death so people will welcome the new, 'wholesome' sweetener with open arms.

Very good insight and highly likely. HFCS has been "outed" afterall, even SNL made a fake commercial mocking how bad it is.

They claim sugar is too expensive. Further, sugar (like sucrose which is table sugar) wouldn't fit the agenda as it doesn't have harmful side effects like HFCS or aspartame, unless you have diabetes and must monitor blood sugar of course.

I'm glad the name won't be changing. I knew about it, and planned to look out for it. Good to know.
I don't eat anything I am not sure of, so even if I didn't know about this, corn sugar would have thrown up a red flag.

Keep eating your processed foods Superman, but first read this:

(NaturalNews) If you think eating and drinking foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) every now and again will not do you that much harm, think again. A new study out of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has found that consuming HFCS can actually destroy memory, slow mental function, and ultimately deteriorate brain performance.

For their study, a team of researchers first trained a group of rats to navigate a complicated maze for five days, and then divided this group into two smaller groups. Both groups were then fed a solution containing HFCS as their drinking water for two weeks, while only one group was given flaxseed oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a specific type of omega-3 fatty acid, as part of a supplement regimen.

At the end of this six-week period, both groups of rats were put back in the maze to see how they performed at navigating it. Upon observation and analysis, the UCLA team discovered that the group fed only the HFCS solution had reduced synaptic activity in the brain, which resulted in rats having trouble figuring out the maze. The brain cells of these HFCS-affected rats literally could not signal properly, which illustrates a clear link between consumption of this highly-processed sugar and brain damage.

Re: For once, Kudos to the FDA: FDA rejects new name for High Fructose Corn Syrup!
For those not totally up on this toxic food additive, here's some additional info:

(NaturalNews) Sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are not just in soft drinks, pastries, and candies. They are hidden in most processed foods, condiments and sauces. Sometimes the sweetening ingredients in those foods and condiments are disguised as dextrose or corn syrup (which is most likely genetically modified) instead of sugar or HFCS.

So sugar is ubiquitous in the standard American diet (SAD). The food like substances from convenience stores, fast food stops, and even upscale restaurants are usually loaded with either sugar or HFCS.

High fructose corn syrup has become the sweetener of choice because it's cheaper and sweeter than sugar. Many say it's worse for you as well. Much of HFCS goes directly to the liver before it is metabolized anywhere else. What isn't used for energy from HFCS is stored as fat. Excess sugar also gets stored as fat.

Even some infant formulas contain sugar or HFCS amounts equivalent to a can of soda. They're getting hooked on sugar early. Sugar and HFCS tend to be addictive.

Since sugar became a household commodity in the 18th Century, sugar consumption has increased from four pounds per person annually to 180 pounds annually for half the American population. HFCS use has increased over ten thousand percent since its introduction into processed foods and beverages in the 1970s.

They all should go with Stevia, Stevia is the best natural sweetener there is, you don´t ruin your teeth, does not make you fat and damn it is sweet as hell, therefore you don´t need much of it.

Edit: Oh, and you can grow it yourself, you just need to know how to process it.

It's quite hilarious because a lot of the lobbyists for high fructose corn syrup are government themselves, offering huge subsidies to corn growers. It's a disaster of huge proportions because of all the negative press of HFCS and now the failing of government supported corn farmers. Maybe finally half our food production can actually go back to growing real food again.
