May 24, 2012 Despite what you may have read, experts insist there's no flesh-eating bacteria outbreak in the United States. But if recent high-profile cases of necrotizing fasciitis have shed light on the disease, which affects about 15,000 people each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control, then more good than harm has been done, they say. Say what? 'Flesh-eating bacteria' explained It sounds like something out of a horror film - a micro-organism that enters through an open wound and begins to consume your body from the inside out. Unfortunately flesh-eating bacteria, or necrotizing fasciitis, isn't fiction. Aimee Copeland, a 24-year-old graduate student from Georgia, is fighting for her life in an Augusta hospital after contracting one type known as aeromonas hydrophila during a zip line adventure. Aeromonas hydrophila is found in most, if not all, freshwater or brackish water environments (water that contains salt but is not saltwater), according to the Food and Drug Administration's "Bad Bug Book." In Sneezes and Coughs... 'Flesh-eating' bacteria strain spread by sneezes and coughs Medical experts in the UK have warned the public to be vigilant about their health to guard against infection by a highly infectious strain of MRSA called USA300, that causes a deadly form of pneumonia, skin boils and abscesses. The deadly bacteria can be easily passed between people in public places through sneezes and coughs and through contact with the skin of an infected person. Metro reports Professor Chris Thomas, professor of molecular genetics at the University of Birmingham, said: "If you’re on a crowded tube or bus and you sneeze you can spread the bacteria. But your sneeze can also land on a metal surface and when someone else gets up from their seat and steadies themselves on the hand rail they can catch it. However, MRSA is also prevalent in the nose and the hair so might be spread by scratching the head and then shaking hands." The MRSA strain is called USA300 because it was first reported in the United States. Daily Mail reports Dr. Ruth Massey of the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath, has warned that people need to take extra care with the USA300 strain and similar types of strains known as PVL-positive community-acquired strains. Medical experts say USA300 is resistant to several front-line antibiotics, that is, antibiotics of first-choice in the event of infection. The bacteria is called "flesh-eating" because infection leads to large unsightly boils and abscesses on the skin and can lead to fatal blood poisoning, or a dangerous form of pneumonia that destroys the lung tissues. Community-acquired MRSA vs hospital strains According to Massey, 1,000 cases of PVL-positive community acquired MRSA were reported in England last year. Out of these, 200 were caused by the "flesh-eating" USA300 strain. The medical expert said: "These community-acquired strains seem to be good at affecting healthy people. They seem to be much better than the hospital ones at causing disease. They don't rely on healthcare workers moving them around, which the hospital ones seem to." Metro reports Professor Chris Thomas, said: "[they break] down tissue...get into your heart, bacteria can get into your bloodstream and take hold of different parts of your body. That could lead to death quite easily." Massey said while USA300 has become a major problem in the U.S., experts in the U.K. have had foreknowledge of the bacteria and are working to contain its spread... In Alcohol Wipes... Triad Group Parent Company Recalls Iodine Prep Pads Over Flesh Eating Bacteria Disease Risk H&P industries, Inc., the parent corporation of Triad Group, has recalled Povidine Iodine Prep Pads because they may be contaminated with a type of bacteria associated with flesh eating bacteria disease, meningitis in newborn infants and pneumonia in patients on ventilators. According to an H&P press release, the iodine prep pad recall is being initiated because an investigation and sampling tests conducted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, as well as its own investigation, showed the presence of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica. Two-thirds of alcohol wipes contaminated — Two-thirds of tested samples of alcohol prep pads tied to a massive recall, serious infections and death were contaminated with dangerous bacteria, including tainted products from eight of 10 separate lots, according to a new government report. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday offered more detail about problems with medical wipes manufactured by H&P Industries Inc., which does business as the Triad Group of Hartland, Wis. In a brief field notes summary, the CDC reported that The Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colo., tested 60 samples of Triad Group alcohol prep pads last fall and determined that 40 were contaminated with the bacteria Bacillus cereus. The bacteria were detected in wipes from eight of 10 different manufacturing lots, the report said. Hospital officials tested the wipes — as well as other single-use, disposable items including syringes and sterile applicators — after two children, including a 10-year-old boy with leukemia and an infant with congenital heart disease, developed sudden, life-threatening infections. Both were caused by Bacillus cereus, laboratory cultures determined. The Colorado findings sparked a federal Food and Drug Administration investigation that prompted the voluntary recall of the alcohol wipes, officials said. Hundreds of millions of Triad Group alcohol wipes used in hospitals and clinics and sold under the private labels of grocery stores such as Safeway and Kroger and drugstores such as Walgreens were covered by the January recall because of potential contamination with the bacteria. The products are often used to clean skin before injections; many may still be in people’s homes. For a list of recalled brands, click here. In addition, H&P Industries Inc. last week recalled all lots of its povidine iodine prep pads because of contamination with different potentially deadly bacteria, Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, which have been tied to meningitis infections in newborns and to flesh-eating bacteria disease. Those pads are used to clean minor burns and scrapes and before surgery... In Hospitals... Hospitals Serving Up Flesh-Eating Bacteria? Increasingly, Americans are being hit with strains of flesh-eating bacteria, and worse yet, hospitals themselves are harboring the nasty bugs. The condition, known as necrotizing fasciitis - a serious infection of the skin and soft tissues - has manifested itself in a number of people recently, with cases in South Carolina and Georgia, according to reports... ...So why is being in the hospital potentially even more dangerous for these victims? Because, a 2011 study found, hospital rooms are rife with such disease-causing bacteria, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus), which were found on 95 percent of hospital room privacy curtains tested, researchers from the University of Iowa found. Worse yet, replacing them did no good; most were re-contaminated within a week, the researchers said. Contamination - and re-contamination To get their results, the research team tested 43 curtains in 30 hospital rooms twice a week for three weeks, taking 180 swab cultures total, Time magazine reported. This is what they found: - Twelve of 13 new curtains were re-contaminated within 7 days; - Of 43 curtains, 41 of them were contaminated at least once; - MRSA was discovered on 21 percent of curtains; - VRE was even more prevalent - it was found on 43 percent of curtains. The reason why these findings are significant is because MRSA is one of the flesh-eating varieties of resistant superbugs currently afflicting Kuykendall, Copeland and Vaughn... In Cocaine... Cocaine Laced With Veterinary Drug Levamisole Eats Away at Flesh Cocaine cut with the veterinary drug levamisole could be the culprit in a flurry of flesh-eating disease in New York and Los Angeles. The drug, used to deworm cattle, pigs and sheep, can rot the skin off noses, ears and cheeks. And over 80 percent of the country's coke supply contains it. "It's probably quite a big problem, and we just don't know yet how big a problem it really is," said Dr. Noah Craft, a dermatologist with Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute. In a case study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Craft describes six cocaine users recently plagued by the dark purple patches of dying flesh. And while they happened to hail from the country's coastlines, the problem is national. "It's important for people to know it's not just in New York and L.A. It's in the cocaine supply of the entire U.S.," Craft said. Craft is one of several doctors across the country who have linked the rotting skin to tainted coke. The gruesome wounds surface days after a hit because of an immune reaction that attacks the blood vessels supplying the skin. Without blood, the skin starves and suffocates. Eighty-two percent of seized cocaine contains levamisole, according to an April 2011 report by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Why dealers would stretch their stash with levamisole instead of the more traditional fillers, like baking soda, is unclear, although studies in rats suggest the drug acts on the same brain receptors as cocaine. So it might be added to enhance or extend the cocaine's euphoric effects on the cheap. Despite the widespread contamination, not all of the country's cocaine users experience the flesh-rotting reaction. It appears that some are more vulnerable to the tainted cocaine's effects. "We don't know who this is going to happen to," said Dr. Lindy Fox, the University of California, San Francisco, dermatologist who first connected the gruesome lesions on cocaine users to levamisole. Similarly, some patients have more extreme reactions than others. Fox said she once saw a photo of a man whose entire body, face included, was black with dying flesh... In "Bath Salts"... 'Flesh-Eating' Bath Salts The use of street drugs known as “bath salts” are the source of an outbreak of a rare flesh-eating disease. Numerous cases of necrotizing fasciitis caused by an intramuscular injection of bath salts are being reported across the United States. So-called “bath salts” are sold as synthetic powders that “often contain various amphetamine-like chemicals,” according to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, which warned that injections can cause the ravaging skin condition. It was first noticed when doctors in New Orleans treated a 34-year-old woman who developed forearm pain and redness after she attended a party. She didn’t have any other symptoms but did have a small red puncture wound on her arm. The woman eventually admitted that she injected bath salts two days before her symptoms began. The doctors reexamined her and determined that she had necrotizing fasciitis. The disease progressed so rapidly that the doctors had to amputate the woman’s arm, shoulder and collarbone and perform a radical mastectomy. The woman later underwent skin grafting and rehabilitation. “Despite the drug’s legal status, it must be treated as illicit, and one must be suspicious when examining a patient with this clinical history because the diagnosis of flesh-eating bacteria can masquerade as abscesses and cellulitis,” said doctors who spoke with WWN. Bath Salt users are running scared. Not only can you get the flesh-eating disease from injecting the bath salts, but if you come in contact with someone who used bath salts, you may get the disease as well. One woman reported that her boyfriend injected salts and two days later SHE developed symptoms. When the patient was reexamined, she had rapidly progressing redness, skin sloughing, and drainage. Necrotizing fasciitis was suspected and she immediately underwent emergent surgical debridement and exploration, and more antibiotics were added. The infection moved so fast that pink, healthy tissue was literally dying before the surgeons’ eyes. They had to keep removing tissue until they reached clear margins of healthy tissue to stop the progression of disease. In another case, a Mississippi woman’s experiment with the illicit drugs dubbed “bath salts” cost her both legs — and nearly her life — after she was ravaged by flesh-eating bacteria that invaded an injection site... |

I woke up the next morning with a few more blisters and a nasty cough, mucus, and shortness of breath. I went to the doctor and was put on antibiotic, steriod, cough syrup, and breathing treatments. The doctor didn't think I had poison ivy and I might have pnemonia. We didn't do an x-ray because I have had a few cat scans this past year due to kidney stones, so I can't say for sure it is pnemonia. I have never had it before, and aside from my kidney stones I am pretty healthy.
