They are exploiting religion for their own egotistical purposes. Narcissism and judgmental attitudes go hand in hand.

Some people are in religion for the narcissistic judgmental attitudes they think religion allows them to take toward other people. Especially church ladies, who use the power of gossip and backbiting to undermine other women and ruin reputations, and then judge and condemn the targets of their slandering gossip.
