Research confirms Fukushima radiation danger less than feared.
15 months since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, and new research is being published about the impact of its radiation leaks. As you might expect, studies are finding that the dangers are far less than what we were told by anti-nuclear activists and sensational media reporting.

Over at NPR, an article (“Nuclear Tuna Is Hot News, But Not Because It’s Going To Make You Sick“) notes that trace amounts of cesium were found in tuna:

[link to www.npr.org]

So the question is, how much more radiation did these particular tuna fish contain? The answer is: A trivial amount. In fact, radiation from the cesium is 30 times less than the radiation that’s already in the fish naturally in the form of potassium-40, according to the research paper. And the natural polonium-210 packs a radiation dose 200 times larger than the dose from the cesium.

Another study has found radiation levels at sea will not cuase any harm,

[link to www.marklynas.org]

Fukushima-derived radiation doses experienced by marine organisms throughout the food chain are well below levels which could cause harm to ocean biodiversity, and even in the most part below levels experienced due to naturally-occurring radionuclides.

Unfortunately, given that fish caught offshore from Fukushima are entirely safe for human consumption (measured levels in fish are 150-fold less than the legal limit on average), there is little prospect of a no-fishing zone which might provide great marine wildlife benefit as the Chernobyl exclusion zone currently does for land-based rare species.

Opponents of nuclear power often make out that the consequences of a serious accident are some variant of Armageddon (sterilising large areas for generations, etc). Fukushima shows that this is absolutely not the case. The environmental effects of an accident are transient, and virtually non-existent compared to other human impacts on biodiversity.

There has also been research on radiation exposure in general A new study from MIT scientists, which found that mice exposed to 400 times normal levels of background radiation suffered from no DNA damage:

“There are no data that say that’s a dangerous level,” says Yanch, a senior lecturer in MIT’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering. “This paper shows that you could go 400 times higher than average background levels and you’re still not detecting genetic damage. It could potentially have a big impact on tens if not hundreds of thousands of people in the vicinity of a nuclear powerplant accident or a nuclear bomb detonation, if we figure out just when we should evacuate and when it’s OK to stay where we are.”

Ive just gathered this info freely available on the internet, i think this side of the story should be highlighted too.

No doubt, anti-nuclear activists will simply react as they have done in the past: by pretending that this research does not exist, or by labeling these scientists liars/shills.

No safe radiation level

Re: "Bluefin tuna in U.S. reveals radiation from Japan," the Journal, May 29.

There is no threshold for ionizing radiation's impact on health. Even the smallest excess of radiation over natural background will affect the health of exposed individuals and their descendants.

The "safe-to-eat" limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments are meaningless. There is no safe level of radiation.
Why are we told over and over that low levels of radiation pose no health hazard?

Not a nuclear physicist, or even that smart. But common sense tells me that 3 nuclear meltdowns and 1500 fuel rods sitting in an open air, leaking, dilapidated pool of water might present slightly more danger than ONE Chernyobl reactor meltdown.

Hey, asshole. Take a listen from about 45 seconds to what Michio Kaku, a Japanese physicist, says about the THREE FULL CONFIRMED MELTDOWNS that occurred. I'm pretty sure he knows more than you or me combined. You're either a blithering moron or a lying scumbag. I'm going with option B.

Depends on what you are comparing...
More cesium released from fuku and,
nobody ever mentions this,
but.. the Fiasco at Fuku is ongoing..
as well as the ocean contamination,
the burning of radioactive debris and
the dumping of sludge into the bay.

Its already annoying enough dealing with you schizophrenic fear mongers. There is a reason why this site is cobsidered the least credible site on the planet and people like you are the reason why...

My post was merely to illustrate the upward revision
of reported emissions at fuku and the cesium amounts..
which are way higher at fuku.
Tepco wouldn't fudge the reports, now would they?

Fuku is not over.

derp.

[snip]

The Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant may have emitted about 900,000 terabecquerels of the iodine equivalent of radioactive iodine 131 and cesium 137 into the air at the height of the disaster, the utility known as Tepco said today in a statement. The amount is about 2 times more than the 480,000 terabecquerels estimated in February by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency or NISA, the utility said.

The total radiation release at the Chernobyl accident was estimated to be about 5.2 million terabecquerels.

Several domestic and international studies have argued estimates by Japan’s nuclear regulator were too low on the radiation release from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, which had three reactor core meltdowns after it was hit by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year.

The estimate released today by Tepco on the atmospheric release covers a period between March 12 and 31 as the emissions after April are estimated to be less than 1 percent of the amount leaked in March, the utility said.

Gross Stupidicy and Idiocy!

Particulate radiation in the body causes cancer. An Alpha Radiation emitter in the body is 400 times more likely to cause cancer.

You do not want to eat fish with any radioactive particulate in it if you can avoid it. Only eat the fish if you are starving to death.

Nearly 1.5 Million people have died from radioactive particulate contamination that they have eaten in Europe after the Chernobyl meltdown.

1.5 Million, and that was after they designated lightly contaminated areas as exclusion zones throughout Europe.

On the other hand Japan has left 90 percent of the contaminated areas open to the public. Based upon a cancer to particulate exposure ratio a conservative estimate of the number of people who will contract Cancer from the Particulate would be way over Ten Million Japanese.

Since we do not know if there are any contaminated areas in Korea, China, Russia or the west coast of North America, we can not accurately estimate how many people outside of Japan will die from Cancer, but knowing that nothing was done in any other country, we can estimate that the death toll will approximate Japan for the rest of the world.

That is a rough estimate of 20 million people on the planet who will die from Cancer because of Fukushima. Particulate radiation kills you if it gets inside your body.
